Chinese AI stocks to extend DeepSeek-driven run as Beijing counts on growth boost
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) stocks are expected to defy a slowdown across industries, as the mainland relies on the technology to boost business efficiency and revive economic growth, according to investors and analysts. Advertisement Companies including Meituan and Xiaomi were set to benefit from a wave of AI integration that would transform business models, according to Morgan Stanley, as investors look for new winners after DeepSeek's breakthrough in generative AI technology. China Asset Management, one of the mainland's biggest mutual-fund firms, said last month that the country's AI adoption – estimated at 5 per cent penetration at present – was on the cusp of explosive growth, similar to personal computers in the 1980s. 'AI will probably become a key driver for China's modernisation,' said Yao Pei, an analyst at Huachuang Securities, in a report this month. 'There are lots of catalysts for AI, and AI is expected to penetrate into every industry,' notably electronics, computing and media, Yao said. DeepSeek's surprising ascent earlier this year put China's technology stocks back into the spotlight, spurring optimism that the country would be able to lead the world in AI in spite of US export curbs. Investors are identifying new prospects in the industry after making bets on platform-based developers of large language models such as Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings . Alibaba owns the Post. Advertisement Unlike the US, which had an edge in AI computing, China was focused on efficiency – emphasising revenue generated by AI-enabled offerings and cost savings achieved through high productivity, the US investment bank said.

TWS Market Entering Maturity, Poised for Moderate Growth Through 2028 Global Smartwatch Market Shipments Down 2% YoY in Q1 2025; China Maintains Upward Momentum China's EV newcomer Xiaomi sells nearly 300,000 SUVs in an hour
Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi has received 289,000 pre-orders for its first sport utility vehicles within an hour of launching, in what the company says was a "miraculous" moment for the industry. The thousands of pre-orders were for the Beijing-based tech giant's five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan ($54,000). Xiaomi, sometimes referred to as China's Apple, is the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer. Founder and chief executive of the electronics-turned-car company, Lei Jun, said he was astonished by the reaction from customers. "My goodness, in just two minutes, we received 196,000 paid pre-orders and 128,000 lock-in orders," Mr Jun said in a video distributed after the vehicle's launch. After the launch, Xiaomi's Hong Kong-listed shares soared 8 per cent at one point before pulling back slightly but ending at a record high. The YU7 is Xiaomi's second vehicle and one that undercuts Tesla's Model Y in price by nearly 4 per cent. The Model Y is China's best-selling SUV and starts at 263,500 yuan ($56,000) in China. Financial consultant Shi*, 26, who owns a Tesla Model Y, said he was considering buying a YU7 for his father. "At this price, it's just really reasonable — it's totally in the same range as Model Y," he said. Xiaomi made its first foray into car making with its SU7 EV model last year as part of a broader industry push to boost domestic consumption. But initial enthusiasm for intelligent driving features in such vehicles was tempered by the fatal crash of a SU7 sedan in March. The vehicle had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed, killing three students. The incident sparked widespread concern over autonomous driving technology and vehicle safety. Xiaomi said at the time that initial information showed the car was in the "navigate on autopilot" intelligent-assisted driving mode before the accident and was moving at 116 kph. In a rundown of the data submitted to local police posted on a company Weibo account, Xiaomi said the autopilot system had issued a risk warning of obstacles ahead. A driver inside the car took over and tried to slow it down but then collided with a cement pole at a speed of 97 kph. *Shi did not want to use his last name. ABC/wires

Xiaomi's EV unit to become profitable this year, CEO Lei Jun says
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will start making money from its electric-vehicle (EV) venture by the end of this year, according to its founder and CEO Lei Jun, less than two years after rolling its first units off the assembly line, as demand surpassed expectations. Advertisement Losses have narrowed, and the unit could become profitable by the third or fourth quarter, local media The Paper reported on Tuesday, quoting Lei during a presentation in Beijing. Xiaomi was confident about its sales following the introduction of its second EV model last month, it reported. A Xiaomi spokesperson confirmed the CEO's comments and declined to elaborate. Sales of EVs amounted to 18.1 billion yuan (US$2.5 billion) in the first quarter versus 18.4 million in the same quarter in 2024, Xiaomi said in a stock exchange filing on May 27. Its gross profit of 4.3 billion yuan was less than its operating expenses of 4.8 billion yuan, resulting in a loss of about 500 million yuan, it added. 01:18 Chinese President Xi Jinping holds rare meeting with China's top entrepreneurs amid US tech rivalry Chinese President Xi Jinping holds rare meeting with China's top entrepreneurs amid US tech rivalry Xiaomi first announced its EV plan in 2021 and rolled out its first unit, the SU7 sedan, in March 2024 to a strong reception.
