Google is rolling out its AI-powered ‘Ask Photos' search again
Ammon News - After quietly pausing the rollout of Google Photos' AI-powered 'Ask Photos' search tool, Google is now expanding access once again and making some improvements to the feature. Google's Gemini AI models power Ask Photos so that you can ask complex questions to help you find photos. But earlier this month, a member of the Google Photos team said on X that the feature 'isn't where it needs to be, in terms of latency, quality and UX.' In a blog post published Thursday, Google said that it has 'heard your feedback' that the feature should 'return more photos faster for simple searches, like 'beach' or 'dogs.'' Now, 'you'll now see results right away while Gemini models continue to work in the background to find the most relevant photos or information for more complex queries,' according to Google. The company adds that the feature is now 'opening up beyond early access' and is beginning to roll out to more 'eligible users' in the US. The Verge

Brazilian tourist who fell off Indonesian volcano found dead
Ammon News - A Brazilian tourist who fell while hiking near the crater of an active volcano in Indonesia has been found dead, her family and rescuers said. Juliana Marins survived the initial fall from a cliff during an early morning group hike along a steep trail on Mount Rinjani, with rescuers reporting hearing her screams for help on Saturday. But efforts to reach the 26-year-old over the following days were hampered by the extreme terrain and foggy weather, according to Indonesian authorities. After a complex rescue operation, teams finally reached her body on Tuesday, her family said in a statement on social media. "With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive," Marins' family said. "We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received." Marins had been backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before arriving in Lombok Island, Indonesia. She was hiking up Indonesia's second-tallest volcano with five friends and a guide on Saturday at about 06:30 local time (23:30 GMT Friday), when authorities said she fell from "a cliff that surrounds the trail next to the volcano's crater". The search resumed on Tuesday, and rescuers finally reached her body after descending 600m down a ravine, Indonesia's search and rescue agency said in a statement.

Windows is getting rid of the Blue Screen of Death after 40 years
Ammon News - The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) has held strong in Windows for nearly 40 years, but that's about to change. Microsoft revealed earlier this year that it was overhauling its BSOD error message in Windows 11, and the company has now confirmed that it will soon be known as the Black Screen of Death. The new design drops the traditional blue color, frowning face, and QR code in favor of a simplified black screen. The simplified BSOD looks a lot more like the black screen you'd see during a Windows update. But it will list the stop code and faulty system driver that you wouldn't always see during a crash dump. IT admins shouldn't need to pull crash dumps off PCs and analyze them with tools like WinDbg just to find out what could be causing issues. 'This is really an attempt on clarity and providing better information and allowing us and customers to really get to what the core of the issue is so we can fix it faster,' says David Weston, vice president of enterprise and OS security at Microsoft, in an interview with The Verge. 'Part of it just cleaner information on what exactly went wrong, where it's Windows versus a component.' Microsoft says it will roll out this new BSOD design in an update to Windows 11 'later this summer,' alongside its new Quick Machine Recovery feature, which is designed to quickly restore machines that can't boot. The changes to the BSOD are part of a broader effort by Microsoft to improve the resiliency of Windows in the wake of last year's CrowdStrike incident, which left millions of Windows machines booting to a BSOD. DeepSeek faces ban from Apple, Google app stores in Germany
Ammon News - Germany's data protection commissioner has asked Apple and Google to remove Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from their app stores in the country due to concerns about data protection, following a similar crackdown elsewhere. Commissioner Meike Kamp said in a statement on Friday that she had made the request because DeepSeek illegally transfers users' personal data to China. The two U.S. tech giants must now review the request promptly and decide whether to block the app in Germany, she added, though her office has not set a precise timeframe. Google said it had received the notice and was reviewing it. DeepSeek did not respond to a request for comment. Apple was not immediately available for comment. According to its own privacy policy, opens new tab, DeepSeek stores numerous pieces of personal data, such as requests to its AI programme or uploaded files, on computers in China. "DeepSeek has not been able to provide my agency with convincing evidence that German users' data is protected in China to a level equivalent to that in the European Union," Kamp said.
