On This Day, June 28: Biscayne National Park established in Florida

On this date in history: In 1778, the Continental Army under command of Gen. George Washington defeated the British at Monmouth, N.J. A pair of saddle pistols used by the Marquis de Lafayette during the battle fetched nearly $2 million at a 2002 auction. In 1838, Victoria was crowned queen of England. She would rule for 63 years, 7 months. In 1914, Archduke Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia, an act considered to have ignited World War I. In 1919, World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. File Photo by Kevin Dietsch/UPI In 1969, the clientele of a New York City gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, rioted after it was raided by police. The event is considered the start of the gay liberation movement. In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the use of public funds for parochial schools was unconstitutional. In 1972, President Richard Nixon announced that no more draftees would be sent to Vietnam unless they volunteered for service in the Asian nation. In 1980, Biscayne National Park, previously a national monument, was established by an act of Congress. The park preserves Biscayne Bay and offshore barrier reefs in South Florida. In 1997, Mike Tyson bit off a piece of one of heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield's ears during a title fight in Las Vegas. In 2007, the American bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list. Officials of the Interior Department said the eagle, which had been declared endangered in 1967, was flourishing and no longer imperiled. File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI In 2009, Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, rousted out of bed in the middle of the night by soldiers, was forced from office and into exile in Costa Rica in the culmination of a bitter power struggle over proposed constitutional changes. He was in exile for more than a year. In 2011, the International Monetary Fund's executive board named Christine Lagarde chairwoman, the first woman to lead the organization. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the new healthcare law known as the Affordable Care Act. In 2016, militants opened fire and set off explosions at Turkey's Ataturk Airport, killing 45 people and leaving more than 230 injured. Turkish officials blamed the Islamic State. In 2018, five people -- four journalists and a sales assistant -- died after a gunman opened fire at the Annapolis, Md., office of the Capital Gazette newspaper. In 2022, Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking scheme. In 2023, South Korea scrapped its traditional age-counting system, instantly reducing the age of citizens by one or two years in a move to align with international standards and reduce clerical headaches. In 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that enforcement of camping regulation laws against homeless people does not constitute cruel and unusual punishment banned by the Eighth Amendment.

Iran's Foreign Minister Seyeb Abbas Araghchi says Israel ran 'Daddy' to avoid missiles

Photo by Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs/UPI | License Photo June 27 (UPI) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Seyeb Abbas Araghchi said Friday that the "Israeli regime had NO Choice but to RUN to 'Daddy' to avoid being flattened out by our missiles." Araghchi posted the comments on X, four days after President Donald Trump announced there would be cease-fire the next day. The truce has held. Mark Rutte, NATO secretary-general, described Trump as "Daddy" for using strong language against Iran and Israel. Trump said the two nations were like "two kids in a schoolyard" that had a "big fight." The White House embraced the term and released a video of Trump's participation in the NATO Summit in the Netherlands, accompanied by the song Hey Daddy (Daddy's home) by Usher. In the foreign minister's social media post he said: "The Great and Powerful Iranian People, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had NO CHOICE but to RUN to 'Daddy' to avoid being flattened by our Missiles, do not take kindly to Threats and Insults. If Illusions lead to worse mistakes, Iran will not hesitate to unveil its Real Capabilities, which will certainly END any Delusion about the Power of Iran." Araghchi also warned Trump to better treat Iran's supreme leader. "If President Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran's Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, and stop hurting his millions of heartfelt followers," he wrote. In Truth Social post on Friday afternoon, Trump wrote: "Why would the so-called 'Supreme Leader,' Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the war torn Country of Iran, say so blatantly and foolishly that he won the War with Israel, when he knows his statement is a lie, it is not so. As a man of great faith, he is not supposed to lie." Trump said he saved the 85-year-old Khamenei from "UGLY AND IGNOMINOUS DEATH," though the president told Israel not to assassinate the leader. The foreign minister said the Iranian people are strong. "The complexity and tenacity of Iranians is famously known in our magnificent carpets, woven through countless hours of hard work and patience," he wrote. "But as a people, our basic premise is very simple and straightforward: we know our worth, value our independence, and never allow anyone else to decide our destiny." Trump has announced that U.S. and Iranian officials will meet next week to discuss a potential nuclear deal but that an accord was not necessary. Trump continued to claim that U.S. strikes "obliterated" Iran's nuclear enrichment capacities, even though doubt looms. Trump has said he would "absolutely" consider bombing Iran again, especially if Iran continues to work toward a nuclear bomb. Satellite imagery captured Friday appears to show new activity at Iran's Fordow nuclear facility. It is deep inside a mountain to guard it from attacks. Seven B-2 jets struck Iran with seven bombs on Saturday night after a 17-hour trip from Missouri. But the US military did not use bunker-buster bombs on one of Iran's largest nuclear facilities last weekend due to the site's depth, the top US general told senators, according to CNN sources. On Friday, the U.S. Senate rejected a resolution that sought to rein in Trump's ability to use military action against Iran without congressional approval. The vote was 53-47. Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted with Democrats to advance the resolution, and Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted against it.

July offers rare meteor shower combo, stunning views of the Milky Way

In this 30 second exposure, a meteor streaks across the sky during the annual Perseid meteor shower (2021) as seen in Spruce Knob, W.V. During summer, the nighttime side of Earth faces the galactic core, making the Milky Way more vivid than at any other time of year. File NASA Photo by Bill Ingalls | License Photo July will kick off with colorful flashes of light during Independence Day celebrations across the United States, but the cosmos has a light show of its own in store for stargazers later in the month, along with a few other celestial sights. From a weather-inspired full moon to a pair of meteor showers, here are the top astronomy events to mark on your calendar: Thunder Moon: July 10 The first full moon of astronomical summer will rise on Thursday, July 10. Known as the Thunder Moon, this lunar event will be visible across much of the world. The name "Thunder Moon" comes from the frequent thunderstorms that rumble across North America in July. It's also called the Buck Moon, as deer antlers are growing rapidly ahead of the autumn rut. Look for the full moon rising in the southeastern sky around nightfall. It will shine brightly all night before setting in the southwest near daybreak. Milky Way: Late July July has some of the shortest nights of the entire year north of the equator, but while this can make for poor stargazing conditions, skywatchers look forward to the summer nights to see amazing views of the Milky Way. During summer, the nighttime side of Earth faces the galactic core, making the Milky Way more vivid than at any other time of year. Plan to stargaze around the new moon on July 24 and head to a dark location far from city lights, as light pollution can easily wash out the galaxy's faint glow. July 29-30: 2 meteor showers in 1 night An astronomical doubleheader will light up the sky on the night of Tuesday, July 29, into the early morning of Wednesday, July 30, as two meteor showers peak at the same time: the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids, according to the American Meteor Society (AMS). The two will combine for 20-30 meteors per hour, including the chance for some incredibly bright meteors known as fireballs. While July 29-30 is expected to be the best night, the AMS says both showers will be active for around a week, making any night during the end of July and start of August a good time to step outside and look for shooting stars.

Ninth prison escapee in Orleans captured; man remains at large

June 27 (UPI) -- The second-to-last of 10 escapees from a New Orleans jailbreak last month has been recaptured after six weeks on the run, authorities said Friday. Antoine Massey, 33, was located and arrested in a house in New Orleans on Friday night, according to the Louisiana State Police. The previous two inmates were apprehended on May 26 in Huntsville, Texas. HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE June 27, 2025 Ninth Fugitive Arrested in New Orleans from OPSO Inmate Escape LA State Police (@LAStatePolice) June 27, 2025 Officers with the NOPD, State Police, Department of Homeland Security, FBI and U.S. Marshals participated in the arrest of Massey. More than 200 law enforcement personnel participated in the manhunt since the May 16 jailbreak. Massey was taken to a secure state correctional facility at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Agola, which is 135 miles northwest of New Orleans. The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office received an anonymous tip from a citizen that led law enforcement to the house in the city's Third District, according to New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick. "He peacefully gave up to law enforcement who had surrounded the house," Kirkpatrick said during a news briefing. The house was an Airbnb, according to Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges. Authorities are investigating whether anyone helped him. "It's pretty obvious over the last six weeks, to remain a fugitive that long, he had assistance -- he had help," Hodges said at the briefing. Earlier this month, Louisiana authorities found a video online that appeared to show Massey pleading to rappers and President Donald Trump to help him while he was still on the run. Massey was incarcerated for domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, theft of a motor vehicle and a parole violation, state police said. Authorities increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of Massey and Derric Groves to $50,000 per inmate last month. Groves is last remaining escapee. "Law enforcement personnel from various local, state, and federal agencies will continue to work around the clock to locate the one remaining fugitive," Louisiana State police said in a news release. Kilpatrick addressed Grove during the briefing: "We are going to capture you. You will be taken into custody. But you still have the option to peacefully turn yourself in, and we will make an appeal to you to do so. "All of these captures have been able to be done peacefully and that is also the end of the game. We don't want anyone hurt." Groves was convicted last year of two counts of second-degree murder in a 2018 Mardi Gras Day shooting. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, prosecutors said. The inmates escaped from the Orleans Justice Center early in the morning after climbing through a hole behind a toilet. Their disappearance was unnoticed for several hours. "We're installing new razor wire, tightening physical barriers, upgrading locking mechanisms," Kilpatrick said. "These all play an important role in the safety of our residents, staff and the entire community Three inmates were apprehended in New Orleans within the first 24 hours of the jailbreak. Alleged accomplices, including Groves' girlfriend Darriana Burton, inmayes and jail workers, have been arrested.
