Foreign univs express greater interest in partnering with Indian institutions
NEW DELHI: On an average, over 11 lakh Indian students go abroad annually to higher education. However only a paltry figure of around 49,000 international students arrive in India to study. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 gave a massive push to address this imbalance, and the efforts have started bearing fruit. With Australia openly announcing a cap on international students and the UK imposing immigration restrictions on foreign students, the flexibility given by NEP to foreign universities to set up shop in India has come as a boon for universities abroad as well as Indian students who want to pursue degrees in international institutions, say top officials of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The International Division of the AIU is in the forefront to promote foreign education in India. To facilitate this, the AIU had created a dedicated platform two years ago, the Indian Network for Internationalisation of Higher Education (INIHE). It has 1,069 universities in India and 19 associations of foreign universities under its fold. Kuldeep Dagar, Joint Secretary, Evaluation and International Division, AIU, told this newspaper, 'In alignment with the NEP 2020, the UGC regulations of November 7, 2023, has streamlined the process for foreign educational institutes.' The Setting up and Opening of Foreign Higher Education Institutes in India 2023 has created the much needed flexibility to set up campuses in India, offer dual degrees or exchange programmes, he added.

Passenger held at airport with 6kg marijuana
Ahmedabad: A team from the air intelligence unit (AIU) of the Customs department on Thursday seized hydroponic marijuana from a passenger. Based on intel, AIU officers intercepted an Indian national arriving from Don Mueang in Bangkok to Ahmedabad. A check of the passenger's luggage revealed 24 vacuum-sealed packets containing a greenish lumpy substance, which tested positive for marijuana. A total of 6.39kg of the contraband was recovered, a release by the agency said. Hydrochlorothiazide is a medicine that removes extra water from the body and treats high blood pressure. It is banned in sports because it can hide other illegal drugs in urine tests. If an athlete tests positive for this type of medicine, he or she faces a two-year suspension. Chepng'etich is the first woman to run a marathon in less than two hours and 10 minutes. She set her record by winning last year's Chicago Marathon with a final time of 2:09:56. Once the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) received the positive test result last March, the governing body started an investigation. On April 3, it officially charged the Kenyan athlete. The athlete was informed by the AIU in Kenya on April 16. Two days later, she said she would not take part in the TCS London Marathon because she didn't feel ready mentally or physically to race well. The head of AIU, Brett Clothier, said: 'When there is a positive test for diuretics and masking agents, a provisional suspension is not mandatory under the World Anti-Doping Code. Chepng'etich was not provisionally suspended by the AIU at the time of notification, but on April 19, she opted for a voluntary provisional suspension while the AIU's investigation was ongoing.' After further investigation, the AIU has now suspended Chepng'etich. She is the sixth Kenyan athlete to be suspended this year, following Ronald Kimeli Kurgat, Kibiwott Kandie, Sheila Chelangat, Benard Kibet Koech, and Morine Gesare Michira. On social media, Athletics Weekly announced: ' The Kenyan, who is the world marathon record-holder with 2:09:56, tested positive for Hydrochlorothiazide in a test on March 14. The AIU state that Chepng'etich had an estimated concentration of 3800 ng/mL in her urine.' The post also stated: 'Chepng'etich has the right for her case to be heard before a Disciplinary Tribunal.' Any levels of Hydrochlorothiazide below 20 ng/mL in urine are reported as negative. Chepngetich's sample had an estimated concentration of 3,800 ng/mL, the AIU said. Hydrochlorothiazide is prohibited at all times under the World Anti Doping Agency code and considered a 'Specified Substance,' which carries a standard sanction of two years. CNN Sports has reached out to Chepngetich's representative for comment. In the statement, AIU Head Brett Clothier said the organization notified Chepngetich in person on April 16 and 'complied with requests regarding our investigation.' Clothier added: 'Chepng'etich was not provisionally suspended by the AIU at the time of notification, however, on 19 April, she opted for a voluntary provisional suspension while the AIU's investigation was ongoing. 'In the intervening months, the AIU continued its investigation and (Thursday) issued a Notice of Charge and imposed its own provisional suspension.' In accordance with world anti-doping regulations, a provisional suspension from the AIU is not mandatory when there is a positive test for diuretics, which can be used to mask the presence of other banned substances in urine. 'Chepngetich has the right for her case to be heard before a Disciplinary Tribunal and that the AIU will not comment further until this matter has been concluded,' the statement concluded.
