OPEN// Egypt reaffirms support for Somalia's stability

CAIRO, July 3 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty participated Thursday in a virtual session held by the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) at the ministerial level to follow up on developments in Somalia and discuss latest updates on transition from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The foreign minister reaffirmed Egypt's firm and supportive stand regarding Somalia's security, stability, unity and territorial integrity. Abdelatty praised efforts made by the Somali government to restore security and stability and strengthen governance and State institutions across the country. The foreign minister also reaffirmed Egypt's solidarity with the Somali government and people and backing for efforts to enhance the capacity of national Somali institutions and the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali security forces. Meantime, Abdelatty voiced Egypt's concern over the ongoing security challenges posed by terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab, stressing the importance of ensuring a smooth and coordinated transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM. All steps are essential for preserving the security gains achieved so far and preventing security gaps that could be exploited, he added. The foreign minister underlined the importance of providing regular and sustainable funding for the AUSSOM to enable it to fully carry out its mandate, warning that failure to secure adequate funding would undermine the mission's ability to perform its tasks and negatively affect the entire Horn of Africa and the international community, including disrupting global maritime trade routes and increasing terrorist threats. In conclusion, Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting Somalia at both bilateral and multilateral levels through capacity-building programs, training personnel, supporting security and civil institutions and contributing to the provision of humanitarian assistance. Egypt affirms support for Somalia stability at AU Peace, Security Council session - Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's firm support for Somalia's security, stability, unity, and territorial integrity, praising the Somali government's efforts to enhance governance and strengthen state institutions. FM Abdelatty made these remarks during a virtual session of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held at the ministerial level to follow up on developments in Somalia. The session tackled updates regarding the transition process from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). During the session, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's solidarity with the Somali government and people, aiming to bolster the capacities of Somalia's national institutions and facilitate the gradual handover of security responsibilities to Somali security forces. He also expressed Egypt's concern over the ongoing security challenges posed by terrorist groups, foremost among which is Al-Shabaab. Moreover, FM Abdelatty emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth and coordinated transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM to preserve the security gains achieved and prevent the exploitation of security gaps. He further asserted the need to provide sustainable funding for AUSSOM to enable it to fulfil its mandate efficiently, warning that the lack of funding would undermine the mission's ability to perform its duties. This, in turn, would negatively impact the entire Horn of Africa region and the international community, including disrupting global maritime trade and increasing terrorist threats, Abdelatty noted. "Egypt is committed to supporting Somalia, both bilaterally and multilaterally, through capacity-building programmes, personnel training, supporting security and civilian institutions, and humanitarian assistance," he concluded. Similarly, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly addressed Somalia's security challenges during his speech at the AUSSOM summit hosted by Entebbe, Uganda, last April. "The international community's shifting of priorities in 2024 allowed the Al-Shabaab militant group to regain strength and undermined hard-won gains made by the Somali National Army in 2022 and 2023," Madbouly said during the summit. Madbouly, participating in the event on behalf of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, reiterated Egypt's unwavering support for Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's vision of establishing a unified and prosperous state. He stressed the importance of providing Somalia with the necessary resources under AUSSOM to empower the Somali National Army to safeguard its substantial gains on the ground. During his remarks, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast support for Somalia's security, stability, unity, and territorial integrity. An African Union military helicopter crashes in Somalia's capital, killing at least 3

At least three people were killed when a military helicopter serving the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia crashed Wednesday at the airport in the capital, Mogadishu, according to Somali authorities. The helicopter was arriving from Balli-doogle Airfield in the Lower Shabelle region with eight people on board. 'At least three people have been confirmed killed,' said Artan Mohamed, who heads the immigration office at Mogadishu's Aden Abdulle airport. The helicopter originally belonged to the Ugandan Air Force but was being operated by the African Union peacekeeping mission, he said. Ahmed Moalim Hassan, director-general of the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority, told state media that investigations are underway to determine the full extent of casualties and damage. 'Once the situation is under control and the fire is extinguished by the firefighters, we will know more,' he said. 'The firefighting team is still working to contain the fire – most of it has been put out, but there is still smoke which we hope will be cleared soon.' Aviation officer Omar Farah, who was among the first to reach the wreckage, told the AP he saw the helicopter spinning and then it fell very fast. 'There was a huge explosion and smoke everywhere,' said Abdirahim Ali, a nearby resident who also witnessed the crash. Minor delays were reported at the airport, but flights and other operations have since resumed. The African Union peacekeeping mission, known as ATMIS, is helping Somali authorities fight the terrorist group al-Shabaab, which opposes the presence of foreign troops in the Horn of Africa nation. The mission includes troops from countries such as Uganda and Kenya.
