Simba seal semi-final berth after penalty triumph over Al Masry

Published: Wednesday, 09 April 2025 Tanzanian giants Simba SC overcame a two-goal first-leg deficit to knock Egypt's Al Masry out of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup in dramatic fashion, winning 4-1 on penalties after a 2-0 win in regulation time in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday. Goals in the first half from Elie Mpanzu and Steven Mukwala gave Simba the cushion they needed to level the tie on aggregate, following their defeat by the same scoreline in the first leg in Suez. The shootout saw the home side dispatch four well-taken penalties, while Al Masry missed two of their three attempts. Simba storm back to level the tie Backed by a vocal crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Simba wasted no time asserting dominance. Mpanzu opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing off a solo run with a precise shot past Mahmoud Gad in the Al Masry goal. Just ten minutes later, Mukwala doubled the lead with a powerful header that left the goalkeeper stranded. The first half was marred by stoppages, including an injury to Al Masry's Beninese defender Samadou, who was later substituted. Despite their efforts to respond, the Egyptians struggled to gain a foothold in the match. VAR drama and missed chances Al Masry looked brighter in the second half after introducing Mido Gaber and Mohamed Hashem. A controversial moment arose when Simba were awarded a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned after a VAR check. Mahmoud Gad redeemed himself with several crucial saves, denying Simba from extending their lead in open play. However, he couldn't repeat those heroics during the penalty shootout. Penalty heartbreak for the Egyptians In the shootout, Simba were flawless. Jean Ahoua, Mukwala, Kibu Dennis, and Shomari Kapombe all converted their penalties with clinical precision. Al Masry, on the other hand, faltered under pressure. Fakhreddine Ben Youssef was the only scorer, while both Mido Gaber and Mahmoud Hamada failed to convert, sealing their side's elimination. The result ends Al Masry's hopes of returning to the Confederation Cup semi-finals, a stage they last reached in 2018. For Simba, it marks a major milestone as they head into the semi-finals, awaiting the winner between Zamalek and Stellenbosch.

TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup: What the coaches and players had to say ahead of Match Day

The return legs TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Quarter-Finals officially get underway on Wednesday, 09 April. This is what some of the coaches and players had to say ahead of Wednesday's much anticipated showdowns. Fadlu Davids - Simba SC Head Coach 'We know our results for the last match was not what we wanted although the performance was good. Our approach for this game is to turnover the results to qualify, we know we need two goals to get to the penalties, we need three goals to qualify, very important in this match is to keep the clean sheet because if they score one, we need to score four so we need to be very careful with their counter attacks. ANIS BOUJELBENE - Al Masry Head Coach 'Our preparations are good, though we got two goals in the first leg at home. It does not mean that we will come as a weak team, we expect to do better to qualify to the Semis. Al Masry is a big team like Simba so minor things like weather is not the things that can affect our players, we know that it will not be not easy match, we will fight to qualify in front of Simba' KARİM AL-IRAQI- Player Al Masry 'Our focus is on the second leg match against Simba, we know that Simba will come with the pressure to win. We are ready and we are here to play and not to defend. MOHAMED HUSSEIN - Simba SC Captain 'All players know their responsibilities for the second leg match against Al Masry, everyone in the team wants to fight for the team, we want to qualify to the semis and our mentality is we want to qualify. Kheireddine Madoui - Head Coach CS Constantine): "Unlike the first leg, this return match between will be truly decisive. The equalizing goal scored by USM Alger will change our approach to the second leg. We noticed several positive points within our team after the first leg, both technically and tactically, and we could have won this match. We will refer to our performance to prepare for the second leg. We experienced a down period, but the team freed itself from the psychological pressure against USM Alger and we will build on that. Tomorrow, it will be fifty-fifty, but these are the kind of matches our team likes to play. Our goal is, of course, to qualify for the next round. We hope the match will be as fraternal as it was in the first leg." Zakaria Messibah - CS Constantine player "As CS Constantine players, we have prepared well for this match. I hope we will start the match well, just as we did in the first leg, making sure to correct our weaknesses. In fact, we have worked hard on this throughout the week. We need to be very focused at the start of the match. This is very important. We will do everything we can to capitalize on the opportunities we get." Marcos Paqueta (head coach of USM Alger): "This month will be decisive for USM Alger because there is the CAF Confederation Cup, but also the Algerian Cup. I know it will be a very tough match against CS Constantine. I hope my players are ready for this match. We have worked so hard to make sure they are." Kamel Soufi (USM Alger player): "We are aware of the importance of the CAF Confederation Cup, which is different from the Algerian championship or the Algerian Cup. We have prepared well for this game. We, the players, hope to rise to the occasion and bring the joy of qualification to our fans."

Late Ebuka strike puts Al Masry in comfortable lead over Simba

Al Masry put up a strong performance at home to edge Simba in Suez during a high-paced TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Quarter-Final first leg clash on Wednesday evening. Following a frantic start with both sides looking for an early lead, the hosts eventually settle into the match and took control of proceedings. With a more controlled approach to the tie, Abderrahim Deghmoum found the opener in the 16th minute to give Al Masry the much-needed goal to settle the nerves. Simba would not let go of the belief of a comeback, as they continued sending numbers forward, but a disciplined and resolute Al Masry defense kept the Tanzanian giants at bay. Coming back into the second half, both sides continued from where they left off with a high-octane pace to the clash. While both sides enjoying a fair amount of possession, none could break each other's last line of defense, with both sides lacking that final defense splitting pass. It was however in the dying minutes of the tie that Nigerian forward, John Ebuka sealed an emphatic and hard-fought victory for the Egyptians in the 89th minute as he fired home a goal that gave his side a confidence boosting two-goal cushion ahead of the return leg next week.

Davids banking on pre-season training in Egypt ahead of Al Masry double-legged showdown

Simba SC head coach, Fadlu Davids believes the experience gathered during his sides' pre-season training in Egypt will be useful in their upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final clash. After an impressive run in the group stages that saw them finishing top of Group A, the Tanzanian giants' next assignment will be against Egyptian side, Al Masry in a two-legged quarter final that will see the East Africans travel up north for the first leg on 2 April, before hosting the Egyptians in Dar es Salaam on 9 April in the return leg. With this being his first season with the club since joining in July 2024, Davids has hit the ground running, moulding a strong team that is looking to challenge for both domestic and continental honours. Reacting to his sides' draw against Al Masry, Davids said every match from here on would be tough but is hoping that the preseason preparations they had in Egypt will come to the fore when taking on Al Masry in April. 'We accept the draw. Every team you play will be a tough team and they are doing well in the Egyptian league. It's going to be tough, especially when we go away from home, but we did our pre-season in Egypt, and we well prepared for the climate and played some teams in Egypt as well. It won't be easy like any match in the quarter-final, but we are ready for the match', said the 43-year-old tactician. On the approach of the complexity of a double-legged tie, Davids said it was good for them to finish top of the group, as playing the second leg at home in front of their fans would give them the edge. 'That was the very important aspect to be top of the group, so you play away first and with the result you know what to do and what to expect and what result you need to qualify. With our fans in Dar es Salaam, it gives us the advantage of playing the second match at home. We know that in this competition once you get to this round its tough matches especially when you away from home. You have to be really at your best in every second of the game in order to be able to qualify' concluded Davids. The last time Simba reached this stage of the competition was in the 2021/22 season where they were edged 4-3 on penalties by Orlando Pirates, following a 1-1 aggregate stalemate.
