New benchmarks reveal SteamOS beats Windows on handheld gaming performance — here's the results
We now have more proof that SteamOS is better than Windows 11 for gaming handheld performance. Ars Technica (via TechSpot) recently tested five PC games on the Lenovo Legion Go S running on SteamOS and Windows 11. With one exception, games run at higher frame rates on Valve's operating system than on Microsoft's. As someone who has tested the best handheld gaming consoles for years, I'm not surprised by the results. For testing, Ars Technica started with the SteamOS version of the Legion Go S and tested five 'high-end' 3D games using the games' respective built-in benchmarking tools at two different graphics and resolution settings. The site then installed Windows 11 on the handheld and downloaded updated drivers from Lenovo's support site, and ran those same benchmarks again. For good measure, Ars Technica also installed AMD-compatible drivers from Asus, since those drivers are closer to the drivers included with SteamOS. Per Ars Technica's numbers, we can see that SteamOS delivers improved performance in four of the five games the site tested. Borderlands 3's performance remained roughly the same on both operating systems, though Windows with Asus' drivers had a slight advantage. For games like Returnal, SteamOS has an extreme advantage over Windows. Sideloading the Asus drivers showed an improvement in Windows performance, but SteamOS still generally has the advantage. The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is a true Steam Deck rival and arguably puts Windows 11 handheld to shame thanks to its snappy interface and strong performance. While its fans can get overly loud and its battery life isn't great, SteamOS alone makes up for any shortcomings. I tested a handful of games on both the SteamOS and Windows 11 models of the Legion Go S, but the numbers I saw had a caveat since those machines have different components. Ars Technica tested games on the same machine, which provides a clearer picture of the performance differences. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I'm not at all surprised by these results, given how SteamOS is specifically designed to work with gaming handhelds. Valve's operating system also doesn't have the overhead of Windows. That said, Windows has greater game compatibility than SteamOS, so that operating system might be preferable for more enthusiast PC gamers. If you're a more general gamer, however, SteamOS has a cleaner, handheld-friendly interface in addition to offering generally better gaming performance for some titles.

While playing Fortnite, every quick build, flick shot, and sprint across the island was incredibly smooth. The difference was clear during fast-paced combat, where tracking opponents felt more responsive and natural. What truly stood out was when a thunderstorm rolled in during a nighttime match as the HDR kicked in with deep blacks and bright lightning flashes that lit up the scene realistically. The DisplayHDR 1000 certification made each match visually more immersive, especially during those intense late-game circles. The laptop also supports Nvidia G-Sync for consistent gaming visuals on supported titles. All the games we played on this display looked mesmerising and completely hooked us in. We didn't face any lag or stutter of any kind during offline gaming. The full-size keyboard features ROG Overstroke technology for precise gaming. Battery Like most high-performance gaming laptops, the Scar 18's battery life is its Achilles' heel. The 90Whr battery, while larger than many competitors, struggles under the power demands of the RTX 5090 and high-refresh display. Gaming performance on battery power is significantly reduced as the system throttles to preserve battery life. During our testing, the Scar 18 lasted nearly 1.5 hours during intensive gaming sessions unplugged. However, for productivity tasks with the GPU disabled, battery life extended to around 4-5 hours with careful power management. The 330W power adapter is substantial but necessary to feed this 'performance monster'. The laptop supports up to 100 W fast charging, which helps the laptop's battery to reach 50% capacity in nearly 45 minutes when powered off. Verdict The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2025) is an absolute beast of a gaming laptop that delivers on every promise of flagship performance. Its stunning Mini LED display, powerful performance and premium build quality make it a worthy choice for serious gamers and content creators who want the absolute best. While the laptop's premium price point puts it out of reach for every consumer, those who can afford it will experience truly impressive gaming performance. Xbox and Meta have just teamed up to make a VR headset
This is the year that everything becomes an Xbox. Earlier this month, Microsoft announced it was partnering with Asus to launch an Xbox version of its ROG Ally handheld console, turning the portable PC into an Xbox on the go. And it's not stopping there. Microsoft is now teaming up with Meta on a limited-edition Xbox version of the Meta Quest 3S – a VR headset that blends Meta's hardware with Xbox's gaming ecosystem, bringing Xbox to even more devices and platforms. It's not a true Sony PSVR2 competitor (you're still cloud gaming on a virtual screen), but it's the closest Microsoft has ever come to VR. The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition wraps Meta's headset in Xbox colours, bundles in Game Pass extras, and is designed to offer a more console-like experience straight out of the box. The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is a limited-edition redesign of Meta's entry-level mixed-reality headset, designed in collaboration with Microsoft.
