GAC signs BEV distribution deal in the UK

Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) announced it has signed an agreement with Jameel Motors for the distribution of its battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the UK, as the Chinese state-owned automaker continues its global expansion. According to reports, GAC is the fourth Chinese automaker to enter the UK market this month, following similar announcements made by Changan Automobile, Chery Automobile and the Geely brand. Chinese EV giant BYD Auto has already established a strong presence in the UK. The UK is Europe's second-largest BEV market after Germany, with one in four cars sold in the country powered by batteries. The UK government recently announced new incentives, including sales subsidies of up to GBP 3,750 per vehicle, to help accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles. Unlike the European Union (EU), the UK has not imposed import tariffs on Chinese-made BEVs. GAC confirmed that it will initially focus on establishing its Aion BEV brand in the UK, with deliveries of the Aion V SUV and Aion UT hatchback scheduled to begin in early 2026. GAC International president, Wayne Wei, said in a statement: "Entry into the UK marks a crucial step in GAC's internationalization strategy. As we set foot in this dynamic market, GAC is committed to bringing industry-leading products and first-class services to UK consumers.' GAC has already established a presence across South-east Asia and in the Middle East, and recently announced plans to sell its vehicles in Portugal, Poland, and in Brazil. Honda, Nissan discussing co-developing vehicle software

Honda and Nissan are discussing sharing basic software systems for advanced vehicle controls, according to local reports citing sources familiar with the matter, as competition in the global automotive industry continues to intensify. The two Japanese automakers called off merger talks earlier this year, but remain keen to expand their collaboration as standalone companies and generate synergies where possible, as competition from Chinese and other Asian automakers in global markets continues to rise. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect The reports suggested that Honda and Nissan are discussing sharing the cost of developing software systems for use in software-defined vehicles (SDVs), which they plan to launch in the second half of this decade. Honda had previously indicated that it planned to launch battery electric vehicle (BEV) models equipped with its own SDV software from 2026. The development and operation of SDVs require huge amounts of data, so maximizing economies of scale by cost-sharing is seen as key to competing in this emerging segment of the market. Chinese automakers and Tesla are seen as leading the way in the development of SDVs, along with US BEV maker Tesla. Japan's Toyota Motor is understood to be considering sharing its SDV software with Mazda. Tesla opens first showroom in India

Tesla has opened its first showroom in India, as the US battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturer targets the world's most populous country and the third-largest national vehicle market globally. The company also launched its first model in the country, the Model Y SUV, with a hefty on-the-road price tag of INR 6,107,190 (US$ 71,000) for the entry-level rear-wheel drive model, rising to INR 6,915,190 for the extended range version. The vehicles are expected to be imported in fully built-up form from the company's plant in Shanghai, China, with deliveries scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2025. Prices are significantly higher than in most other markets around the world, due to India's import duties of up to 100%, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk has often criticized as being unreasonable. The Indian government has been trying to entice Tesla to build an assembly plant in the country, which would significantly reduce import duties, but Tesla has so far remained reluctant. The company's other plants around the world are operating at well under capacity, with more capacity being built in the US state of Texas. BEV sales currently account for less than 5% of total passenger vehicle sales in India, most of which are models priced much lower than the Model Y. Tesla is understood to be targeting just a few hundred sales per month, but even this will be a hard task given the elevated price tag. The company is competing in this market with established luxury carmakers including BMW and Mercedes-Benz. VinFast has also begun taking orders in India for its VF6 and VF7 battery-powered SUVs, which will be assembled locally from August. Geely steps up efforts to take full control of Zeekr

China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company (Geely) has stepped up its efforts to acquire all outstanding shares in its Zeekr premium battery electric vehicle (BEV) subsidiary, with the aim of taking the company private again. The move is part of the automaker's plans to streamline the group's global operations, generate additional synergies between the individual brands, and create two main divisions – its Geely mass market vehicle unit and the Zeekr premium brand. Geely currently owns just under 63% of Zeekr Intelligent Technology Holding (Zeekr Group), which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange following its initial public offering (IPO) in May 2024. Earlier this year the company offered US$ 2.2 billion for all of the outstanding shares, an offer that has since been increased to US$ 2.4 billion (US$ 2.687 per share) – valuing the company at US$ 6.83 billion. Zeekr was founded in 2021 as Geely's premium BEV brand, incorporating the group's latest technologies. It delivered over 222,000 vehicles globally in 2024, generating a turnover of CNY 75.9 billion (US$ 10.6 billion).
