A guide to using Edits, Meta's CapCut rival for short-form video editing

Meta recently released a new video editing app for creators called Edits. The new app is designed to rival ByteDance's CapCut, a popular short-form video-editing app used by many creators. Meta first shared that it was working on Edits back in January after ByteDance-owned CapCut was removed from U.S. app stores when the TikTok ban momentarily went into effect. Although the app has since come back online and is available to download, TikTok's future in the U.S. remains uncertain, so Meta is ready to capitalize on CapCut's possible absence in the future with its new Edits app. We've created this guide to walk you through the app and the different features it offers, and we provide an overview of how it compares to CapCut. How to get started with the app Image Credits:Meta Edits is available to download on both iOS and Android. Once you download the app and open it, you will be asked to log in with your Instagram account. From there you will see five main tabs: Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Record, and Insights. The Ideas tab offers creators a space to jot down ideas for new videos and save reels to a collection, and the Inspiration tab features a hub for discovering trending audios and other popular reels. The Projects tab is where creators can store and revisit the videos they currently have in progress. This tab is also where creators can upload videos from their phone's camera roll. The Record tab lets creators start filming video content right within Edits. Lastly, the Insights tab gives creators an overview of how their content is performing by surfacing metrics like views, reach, and follower counts. While both Edits and CapCut are great options for editing short-form videos, there are some differences between the two services. CapCut offers more robust editing options, including AI features, than Edits does. Of course, this can be expected since Edits is a lot newer than CapCut. Meta will likely continue to build out Edits over the next months and years, so we can expect to see more advanced functionality in the future. It's also worth noting that CapCut has a more extensive music library compared to Edits. Another difference is the fact that Edits currently doesn't have a subscription offering (for now), but CapCut does. While CapCut offers a free version, some of its advanced tools are locked behind a paid subscription. Edits is free to use, but this will likely change in the future, as Instagram head Adam Mosseri has stated that later versions of Edits may include paid features. In addition, while CapCut is available on the web, Edits is mobile-only. However, this could change in the future. Update: This story originally ran in May and is updated regularly with new information.

A jailbird's guide to using unlicensed music

So you're the content manager for a mall in Dubai and you want to use Bob Marley's Jammin' as the music for your social media soundtrack? Go ahead. That'll get you into trouble quicker than admitting you shot the sheriff. And in the mall itself. That lovely, slow and familiar love song in the zone around the high-ticket jewelry stores or the quick-tempo current chart -topper in the supermarket? You're making every customer within earshot an accessory to a crime. Even in Dubai, that's too high a price to pay for some retail therapy. And when you get caught? The first thing you'll be told when you protest is 'ignorance of the law is no excuse'. Ignorance, in this case, may be that you trusted Instagram, Canva or CapCut, because they showed it as an option. The second thing you'll be told when you argue that '…surely it's okay, everyone else does it' will be 'oh we'll get to everyone else, don't you worry'. We speak about license infringement in malls, but they're just the tip of the iceberg. Last year, 14 NBA franchises were sued for copyright infringement because of the music they neglected to pay for in their promotional videos. That's half of the entire NBA playing dodgeball, not basketball! We can debate the merits of copyright law all day, but the fact remains that published music cannot be used for any commercial promotion without cost. If you have a personal profile on a social media platform, that's okay. Alright, now we've all had a light slap on the wrist, what's the answer? First, remove the ignorance factor. It's not going to cost you anything to explore your options in terms of catalogued music that's available. Spek, Founder & CEO at PopArabia commented, 'If you are a corporate entity or business page on social media you require music licenses to use commercial music from the library available. Social media pages are not exempt from music licensing requirements. Companies in MENA should be aware.' Secondly, put a call into a sonic branding company. They'll sit down with you to discuss solutions that are scalable up or down, with either licensed or original music. Thirdly, don't go looking to AI for the creation of music, particularly if you think your budget is too low for human creativity. It may produce something you think is great, but it won't be original and therefore will never bond with whatever currently represents the brand. Lastly, start thinking about music as an immersive brand experience, not just a prop to help make a quick sale. Because despite its name, sonic branding is not really about sound at all. Sound is a tool to help you achieve better brand engagement. The term brand refers not to a product (or service), but the relationship a human being has with that product. A relationship whose interaction puts an individual human being into a state of grace, borne of trust and satisfaction. Sonic branding, therefore, is about how you feel about a product, service or event. When you brief a sonic branding company and you ask for specific, culturally relevant musical instruments, for example, you should expect more than just nods of acquiescence from the company. In response, you should expect a deep dive into why these specific instruments resonate, and how they contribute to mood. Or at the very least, they should respond with enlightenment from previous experiences about why those instruments are right. Or wrong. That doesn't just put sonic branding on a par with visual branding, it puts it ahead on levels we're only just beginning to comprehend. Please think carefully about the beautiful or dynamic music you use to attract customers. Is it legal? Is it moral? And does it ignore the opportunity to take your brand engagement to a new level? China's tech talent are making big strides — they're creating apps for the world

BEIJING — Chinese developers are powering some of the latest artificial intelligence tools aimed at a global market. Melvin Chen moved to San Francisco from China to co-found AI design startup Lovart, which officially launched Wednesday — after claiming "800,000 users across 70 countries" for its test version. "We will focus on North America as the first step," Chen said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC. He previously led China operations for CapCut, a popular video-editing app from ByteDance that still ranks first in the photo and video category in Apple's U.S. App Store. Lovart uses AI to generate logos, stickers and other branding visuals based on text prompts. The new version launching Wednesday includes a "ChatCanvas" feature that claims to make specific edits easier — a client might ask a professional designer to switch two icons, a task difficult to explain only with words but simple when visuals are included, Chen said. He expects Lovart to surpass 1 million users in the week after its launch. But he said the app isn't coming to China soon, mostly because it's based on Anthropic's Claude 4 AI model and others from OpenAI — both of which aren't officially available in China. Beijing has to give generative AI models the green light for public use and operates a stringent firewall that blocks sites such as Google and Facebook. Companies also have their own rules about where their services can be used. While most of Lovart's team is based in San Francisco with the aim of better localizing the product, Chen said part of the production team is in China. He declined to share operating costs, and said the startup would seek investor funding after securing sufficient user growth. Lovart has a free-to-use option, with monthly subscription fees of up to $90 for wider usage. In a global AI race, the U.S. government has in the last several years ramped up its restrictions on American companies selling advanced semiconductors to China. San Francisco-based OpenAI launched its ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022, and it wasn't until January this year that China produced a clear rival with DeepSeek's breakthrough. But analysts have long expected China's AI advantage would likely lie in applications rather than models, especially given that internet-based Chinese companies were able to build massive food delivery and short-video apps for the large local consumer market. Already in AI video generation, Kuaishou's Kling and Shengshu's Vidu have gained global users in the last 18 months. In the realm of AI agents that can automatically perform a series of complex tasks, Manus has caught international attention. "China-affiliated teams are increasingly influential, driven by concentrated technical talent, agile development culture, and policy support for AI commercialization," said Charlie Dai, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester. "They excel in cost-efficient model training and rapid consumer app iteration, often prioritizing open-source accessibility." "Chinese models now compete globally, challenging U.S. dominance while lowering AI costs," he said. Another advantage is that China models such as DeepSeek and several others are open source, meaning they are free for developers to download and use. Hugging Face, an online platform that allows people to try out open source AI models, regularly show that China models are among the top trending ones for users. As of Wednesday, the Kimi K2 coding-focused model that was launched this month ranked first on the site, followed by Alibaba's Qwen3 coding-focused modes that launched earlier in the day. In image-to-3D models, Tencent's Hunyuan ranks first, while France-based Mistral's Voxtral ranks first in audio-text-to-text. Chen said Lovart will focus on AI for generating images and videos rather than 3D models. "AI is the new camera ... [for] capturing human imagination," he said. He said the startup aims to build traction by holding events with the design community, including in New York, Tokyo and Europe. ChatGPT is by far the most popular AI app in the West, with 70 million monthly users on average in the U.S. and 144.6 million in Europe as of July, according to Sensor Tower. Google's Gemini was a distant second in both markets, but while Microsoft Copilot ranked third in the U.S., DeepSeek held the third spot in Europe, the data showed. During a visit to Beijing last week, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said nearly all of DeepSeek's users had downloaded the model to run it locally in countries around the world. He also emphasized that priorities for AI development are shifting. "I think over time it will be increasingly less important which one of the models are the smartest," he said. "It's going to be which one of the models are the most useful."

Google Photos could soon get a surprising third-party integration (APK teardown)

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google Photos is testing a CapCut button to help users edit Memories in the ByteDance-owned app. We spotted and were able to surface the button while conducting an APK teardown of the Google Photos Android app. The button only appears for Memories made up of photos and does not show up for a video-only memory. In a rather surprising move, Google seems to be quietly testing a new third-party integration in its Photos app, the likes of which we've never seen before. It's extremely rare for Google to promote a third-party app within its own app, especially one owned by a company under scrutiny in several regions, including the US, but that's exactly what may be happening. Authority Insights story on Android Authority. Discover You're reading anstory on Android Authority. Discover Authority Insights for more exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage you won't find anywhere else. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. While digging through the code of version 7.38 of the Google Photos app, we spotted and managed to surface a new 'Edit in CapCut' button directly linked to the popular video editing tool owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. The new 'Edit in CapCut' button appears within the Memories viewer of Google Photos, a feature that auto-generates highlight reels of your past photos and videos. The screenshots below show the new, full-screen Memories UI in Google Photos, a change we first observed back in February. But now, for memories made up of photos, the 'Edit in CapCut' option shows up prominently in the bottom left corner of the screen. If the memory is a video spotlight (a video-only memory), the CapCut option doesn't appear. For users who don't have CapCut installed, tapping the button triggers a Play Store prompt to install the app. If you have CapCut already on your device, the selected memory will likely be downloaded and sent directly to the CapCut editor for further customization. We couldn't get CapCut to open up after pressing the button since the app isn't available in India, where our contributor Assemble Debug discovered the integration. This makes us wonder why Google would promote a non-Google, ByteDance-owned app in Photos? CapCut is banned in countries like India, meaning this feature will likely be inaccessible or broken for users in the region. The app was also temporarily suspended in the United States, but came back online earlier this year. Perhaps ByteDance has offered incentives to Google to push CapCut through one of its most widely used apps. Given that the feature hasn't rolled out widely or even appeared in the app's beta version, it's possible that Google is just testing the waters or planning a limited regional launch. Got a tip?
