‘Saved 30k paper sheets': On digital platform, Cujira school has paperless exam

Panaji: Aiming to become eco-friendly and set an example for its students, Dr K B Hedgewar higher secondary school, Cujira, has adopted a digital platform to conduct its exams in a fully paperless format for 347 of its Class XI and XII students. The exam began on July 21 and will continue till July 26, the school said. The students appeared for the exam in two batches. They will write the exams without using a single sheet of paper, said higher secondary school principal Deepak Amonkar. He said the school has collaborated with LittleMore Innovation Labs and used the LMExams platform. 'This initiative is a confluence of educational reform and environmental responsibility. It reflects our commitment to leading the nation in adopting scalable innovations that benefit both our students and our planet,' said school manager Subhash Desai. The school stated that this pilot project alone will save 30,000 sheets of paper, equivalent to conserving 3–4 fully grown trees. 'If scaled across Goa, over five million sheets could be saved annually — making the state's education system greener, lighter, and globally responsible,' said Dr K B Hedgewar high school principal Vilas Satarkar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My 4-year-old kidneys are failing, only you can help Donate For Health Donate Now Undo He said the digital platform used was tamper-proof, offered encrypted digital question delivery, allowed handwritten digital answers, provided full offline exam mode with audit trails, and enabled online evaluation with assistive marking tools. 'It is not a tablet. It is not a laptop. It is an exam-only device designed for secure, scalable assessments,' said Amonkar. 'This is more than an exam — it's a step towards rethinking how we assess, how we conserve, and how we prepare students for a changing world. The collective vision of the leadership at Dr K B Hedgewar school made this first-of-its-kind paperless exam pilot a reality, setting a benchmark for schools across India,' said Govind Parvatkar, chairman, Goa Education Development Corporation. He stated that the model is in sync with the National Education Policy's future-forward vision. The school said LMExams offers the service without compromising on exam integrity or incurring heavy infrastructure costs and can securely conduct high-stakes exams without paper or internet.

14-yr-old recovers after spearhead pierces face while catching crabs in Korba

Raipur: A 14-year-old boy from Korba district sustained a life-threatening facial injury after slipping in the mud while catching crabs with a spear-like iron tool. The 17.5 cm-long tool pierced deep into his face and neck, coming dangerously close to his spinal cord. Doctors at state-owned Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur performed a complex and delicate surgery to remove the embedded tool, successfully avoiding major complications. The boy is now recovering well. "The tool, which was approximately 17.5 cm long, penetrated about 7 cm into the boy's face and neck, reaching close to the spinal cord," the hospital spokesperson said. The boy, from Madhunara village in Korba district, was admitted to the ENT department after the accidental injury. The spearhead pierced through muscles and entered the main salivary gland (parotid gland), passing between major blood vessels in the neck and extending into the paraspinal space. Dr Hansa Banjara, Head of the ENT department, led the surgical team. "This was an extremely delicate surgery," Dr Banjara explained. "The spearhead's proximity to major blood vessels and facial nerves posed a significant risk of paralysis or severe bleeding. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo We had to meticulously navigate through the parotid tissue and around the facial nerve to extract the tool." The team carefully removed the last part of the tool, which was near the spinal cord and spinal nerves, avoiding any complications. The boy is recovering well after the procedure. Dr Santosh Sonkar, Medical Superintendent, stated, "This surgery is an excellent example of our ENT department's expertise, teamwork, and technical proficiency." The patient's family expressed profound gratitude to the surgical team, acknowledging their skill and composure during the successful operation. "Our faith in this institution has grown immensely," a family member stated. The hospital spokesperson said the boy was catching crabs in a field using the tool when he slipped in the mud and his face struck the spearhead as he fell.

Tun M: My heart attack led to IJN's creation

KUALA LUMPUR: "My chest has been opened three times. It's quite frightening when your chest is opened and people are 'playing around' with your heart — but Alhamdulillah, I survived." That was how former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recalled a harrowing moment during his heart bypass surgery, which later inspired the establishment of the National Heart Institute (IJN). Speaking at his 100th birthday celebration hosted by IJN today, Dr Mahathir said he never imagined having heart problems, as he had always considered himself to be in good health. However, that changed one night in 1989 when the then 64-year-old attended a dinner and returned home feeling extremely uncomfortable in his chest. "I thought lying down would ease it, but it didn't. I got up — still there. I walked around — still felt a tightness in my chest," he said. Dr Mahathir said after contacting his doctor, he was diagnosed with a heart attack and rushed to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital (HKL). "At the hospital, I met Dr Robaayah (renowned cardiologist and IJN's first CEO, Tan Sri Dr Robaayah Zambahari) and other doctors, and they confirmed it was a heart attack. "Not a massive one, but a heart attack nonetheless," he said. At the time, open-heart surgery was the only treatment available, and there was debate over whether he should undergo the procedure in the United States or Kuala Lumpur. "I asked the doctors, could it be done in KL? They said yes. So I said, fine — if it can be done in KL, I should do it here. "I felt I should at least show some confidence in Malaysian doctors," he said, referring to local heart surgeon Tan Sri Dr Yahya Awang. Following the lengthy and successful surgery, the doctors were concerned over the lack of proper facilities for heart surgery at HKL. "They complained they didn't have good facilities. They said we should have a dedicated heart centre," he said. Dr Mahathir recalled visiting a state-of-the-art heart centre in Manila, Philippines, and the idea struck him. "I thought, why not? We should have a heart centre. And of course, at that time, I was the prime minister — and a prime minister has a lot of power. "It was a matter of allocating funds for a new heart centre, and I immediately approved the establishment of a heart institute in KL — and that's how IJN was founded," he said. IJN was then founded in 1992. The institute specialises in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services for both adult and paediatric patients. As the national referral centre for cardiovascular disease, IJN sees new cases referred from all over the country and abroad and follow-up cases at the outpatient clinics. It went through an expansion which was completed in late 2009. Following the expansion, the number of beds dedicated for heart treatment increased to 432, making IJN one of the largest heart centres in the region. In March 2019, pioneer surgeon Yahya announced the takeover of IJN by the Health Ministry from the Finance Ministry. Dr Mahathir, who underwent three heart surgeries in Malaysia — one at HKL and two at IJN — said he takes pride in the capabilities of local doctors, whom he considers on par with international specialists. "I believe our doctors are just as good as anyone else. "My belief is that we can do whatever others can do," he said. Dr Mahathir suffered a heart attack in 1989 when he was prime minister, followed by two more in 2006. A year later, he underwent a quadruple bypass surgery.

Pembrokeshire Libraries have teamed up with Dr Beynon's Bug Farm in St Davids to add an exciting twist to the Summer Reading Challenge. As part of the Story Garden theme, 32 golden tickets have been hidden in books across the county's libraries. Children who find these tickets will win free entry to the Bug Farm, a popular destination that combines science, nature, and farming. The Summer Reading Challenge, a national initiative run by The Reading Agency, encourages children to read at least six library books over the summer holidays. The aim is to keep children reading during the break, supporting literacy and helping them develop a love for books. This year, those who sign up early will also receive an extra prize. Pembrokeshire Libraries are pulling out all the stops to make the Story Garden theme special for children. To start the fun, local children's author Kerry Curson will be hosting special events at Fishguard, Haverfordwest, and Narberth libraries to launch the challenge and inspire young readers. Throughout the summer, libraries in Fishguard, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Pembroke Dock, and Tenby will be hosting weekly story and craft sessions related to the theme. These free events aim to keep children engaged, entertained, and learning all summer long. Reading during the holidays is not only fun but also helps children maintain and improve their reading skills, boosts confidence, and encourages creative thinking. Parents and children can follow Pembrokeshire Libraries on social media for updates, event listings, and clues about the golden tickets. The Summer Reading Challenge is more than just about reading; it's a chance for children to explore new worlds, characters, and adventures. So, visit your local library, get involved in the Summer Reading Challenge, and see if your next book holds the key to a fun day out at Dr Beynon's Bug Farm.
