Jason Momoa shaves off beard for the first time in 6 years ahead of ‘Dune' return: ‘I hate it'
King clean-cut. 'Aquaman' star Jason Momoa, 45, flaunted a clean-shaven look for the first time in six years as he prepares for his next role. 'God damn it, I hate it,' Momoa quipped in an Instagram reel posted on Wednesday. 4 Jason Momoa shaved off his signature beard. Jason Momoa/Instagram The 'Game of Thrones' actor transformed his entire look as a 'kick-off' to reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in 'Dune Messiah,' which was announced as the third and final film in the eight-time Oscar-winning sci-fi series. 'Only for you, Denis,' the actor said, referring to Denis Villeneuve, the director of 'Dune: Part One' and 'Dune: Part Two.' The Hawaii native played Duncan Idaho in the 2021 film, but he did not appear in the 2024 sequel because his character died in the first film. However, he confirmed that he's 'making a comeback' in the third film when his character is resurrected as a clone, according to an interview on the 'Today' show in March 2025. The Hollywood hunk filmed himself shaving off his iconic facial hair in the clip, which also served as a promotion for his reusable bottled water company, Mananalu. 4 'God damn it, I hate it,' Momoa quipped in an Instagram reel. Jason Momoa/Instagram 'I think it's been about six years, maybe a little bit more, since I did 'Dune,'' Momoa said. 'What was really special about that is that's when I started launching Mananalu. At the time, we were one of the first ones to release the aluminum bottle.' The 'Justice League' actor prompted his company's partnership with Boomerang Water, which aimed to reuse water bottles to get 'rid of single-use plastic. For our children and for our planet.' Momoa's son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, will be part of the highly anticipated third installment of the 'Dune' trilogy, according to Deadline. 4 Momoa attended the world premiere of the Apple TV+ series 'Chief of War' on July 18. Apple TV+ via Getty Images Nakoa-Wolf was cast to play Leto II, the twin son of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya's characters Paul Atreides and Chani. The A-lister's son will star alongside 'Silo' actress Ida Brooke, who will portray the other twin, Ghanima. The 'Minecraft Movie' actor shares two teenage kids, Nakoa-Wolf and daughter Lola Iolani, with his ex-wife, 'The Cosby Show' actress Lisa Bonet. The couple's divorce was finalized in June 2024, seven years after they got married. 4 Momoa starred as Arthur in 'Aquaman' and 'Aquaman 2.' Getty Images Momoa isn't the only person getting a new look for the movie. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Chalamet closely shaved the nape of his neck before an outing with girlfriend Kylie Jenner in St. Tropez on July 7. The 'Call Me by Your Name' actor wore a green bandana over a navy Nike hat, so fans couldn't get a full look at how much hair had been buzzed away. 'Dune Messiah' is scheduled to be released in December 2026.

Jason Momoa Shaves For The First Time In Six Years For ‘Dune 3': 'Goddamnit, I Hate It'
Jason Momoa is getting ready to get back into character for Dune: Part Three and filmed himself shaving his facial hair. In a new video posted on social media, the Aquaman actor said the last time he had shaved was for the first film. More from Deadline Taron Egerton Says He's "Too Messy" To Play James Bond, Ruling Himself Out Of Denis Villeneuve's Plans Barbara Broccoli Gives Verdict On Denis Villeneuve As Director Of Next James Bond Ozzy Osbourne's All-Star Farewell Concert With Black Sabbath Draws 40,000 'Only for you, Denis,' Momoa says in the video, giving a shoutout to Dune director Denis Villeneuve. After Momoa shaved off his facial hair, he looked at himself and said, 'Goddamnit, I hate it!' Dune was first released in 2021, where Momoa played the role of Duncan Idaho, a swordmaster of House Atreides and a mentor to Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides. Momoa didn't appear in the sequel, released in 2024, but will return for Dune: Part Three, which is expected to open in theaters on December 18, 2026. The third film in the Dune film series is based on the 1969 novel Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert, which follows Atreides' struggles with the consequences of his Fremen-led jihad upon his ascension to Emperor Muad'Dib. Momoa will be joined by his son Nakoa-Wolf Momoa in Dune: Part Three, who was recently cast alongside Ida Brooke as Leto II and Ghanima, the twin offspring of Paul Atreides (Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya). Deadline reported in April that Robert Pattinson would be joining the film series in a new role, with sources saying he would take on the villain role of Scytale. Last year, Villeneuve said that this third film would be his last entry in the Dune saga, telling Vanity Fair, 'It's important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That's done and that's finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it's not like a trilogy. It's strange to say that, but if I go back there, it's to do something that feels different and has its own identity.' The filmmaker said that he 'would love to do something else' following the third installment of the saga. ‘Dune 3' Will Feature the Return of Smooth Faced Jason Momoa
As shooting gets underway on Dune: Part 3, the adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah, returning cast member Jason Momoa is prepping to come back, but not exactly as who you'd think he'd be… or looking the way you'd expect. An Instagram post shows Momoa shaving to mark his return to the Dune franchise, a journey he began six years ago. It's a stunt to celebrate the anniversary, which began at the same time as his collaboration with environmentally friendly aluminum water bottle purveyors Mananalu. The clip shows him doing his least favorite thing—shaving his facial hair—which he does while discussing the importance of reducing single-use plastics. He admits that being clean-shaven is something he'd do 'only for you, Denis,' referring to Dune franchise helmer Denis Villeneuve. View this post on InstagramMomoa continued, 'Goddammit! I hate it.' But as Dune mythology fans know, the move is essential for the actor's comeback to the Dune universe. Without giving too much away, in the first film, Momoa played Duncan Idaho, House Atreides' faithful swordmaster and guard who trained Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and served under his father, Leto (Oscar Isaac). He presumably dies while taking out a whole lot of the Emperor's Sardaukar soldiers. While we don't see it happen, the circumstances of his end there (because in the book he explicitly dies) lead to an explanation of how his body was then given to the Tleilaxu. In the Dune universe they are known for their clones, known as Gholas, which will come into play in Dune 3 as Paul rises to power. It's also neat to see that Momoa's return as someone completely loyal to the House Atreides will probably be endeared to Paul's son Leto II, played by his real-life son Nakoa-Wolf Momoa. Jason Momoa insists his actor son isn't a nepo baby
Jason Momoa insists his actor son isn't a nepo baby. The Aquaman star's 16-year-old son Nakoa-Wolf Momoa has landed a key role in Dune: Part Three, but his famous father says the teenager got the part without any help from him. Jason told Extra: 'He's into the workforce for the first time. It's going to be good. 'He did it on his own. I don't want to help him, and he's done it all on his own, and good for him.' Nakoa-Wolf, the son of Jason Momoa and 56-year-old actor Lisa Bonet, has been cast in Denis Villeneuve's third Dune instalment alongside Silo star Ida Brooke, 17. The two young actors will portray the twin children of Paul Atreides (played by 29-year-old Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (27-year-old Zendaya.) The film, which follows the events of Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune Messiah, continues the story of Paul Atreides as he becomes emperor. Jason, 45, originally played Duncan Idaho in Villeneuve's 2021 Dune film but did not appear in Dune: Part Two, which was released in 2024. He is confirmed to return in the third instalment, though details about his character's reappearance remain unclear. In the original book series, Duncan is resurrected as a clone – known as a ghola – following his death. Jason added to Extra about Nakoa-Wolf's achievement: 'You want your children to be better than you, and I really, actually believe he is. I couldn't do what he's doing at his age. 'There's no way I could sit in a room with Denis Villeneuve and hold my own. I was on Baywatch at 19. He's 16 and holding shit down with Denis Villeneuve. 'We raised him beautiful. We raised our children… it's just, you know, being loved and being confident in themselves… that is what he is. He's very confident.' The actor was speaking at the premiere in Hawaii of the Chief of War, at which he appeared alongside Nakoa-Wolf and his daughter, 17-year-old Lola Iolani. The historical drama series, which explores the unification of the Hawaiian Islands in the 18th century, marks one of Jason's major projects outside the Dune franchise. In Dune, Jason's Duncan Idaho character was the loyal swordmaster and mentor to Paul Atreides. His character was killed near the film's climax while defending Paul and Lady Jessica (portrayed by 56-year-old Rebecca Ferguson) from Sardaukar forces.
