How we treat ourselves in The Subscription Age
We are in the age of subscriptions. Pretty much every single thing you enjoy, you can subscribe to. Everything from food to beer, beauty products to limited edition collectables, cloud storage to pet clothing… the list goes on and on. However, we're going to focus on the entertainment forms of subscription, and what we reckon are the best of the bunch for you to treat yourselves to, starting with… GAMES – Game Pass Ultimate In this case, when we say games, we don't mean whip out the Monopoly board, and we don't mean check out the selection of casino online UK sites. No, in this case, we specifically mean video games, and if you've got an Xbox or a PC (or both), then the Game Pass Ultimate is a must-have. For £14.99/€17.99 per month, you get access to hundreds of multi-generational games on console, PC, and cloud, as well as being able to play brand new games on their very first day of release at no additional cost. Game Pass Ultimate also allows you to play multiplayer online for consume, includes a membership for EA Play, as well as additional member deals, discounts, perks, and in-game benefits for free-to-play games. STREAMING – YouTube Premium Yes, we know you've got so many amazing streaming platforms to choose from. Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Paramount+… the list goes on and on. And on. But might we make a completely leftfield choice here and say that forking out for YouTube Premium is one of the best decisions you can make for your daily entertainment consumption? Starting at £12.99/€13.99 per month for an Individual Plan (alternatives include a Family Plan or a Student Plan, depending on your needs), it means you've got access to all of the videos on YouTube, but without any of the ads. You'll also be able to continue listening to YouTube even if you lock your phone, or download and playback when you're out of internet range. Additionally, you'll also get access to YouTube Music, which is essentially its very own version of Spotify (more on that in a bit), so you're getting A LOT for this one subscription. CINEMA – Omniplex It really does feel we're in the middle of a fantastic cinema-going resurgence, following the big drop-off that the big screen had to endure in the aftermath of the pandemic. 2025 has already seen some incredible blockbusters that have people packing out screens again – Sinners, 28 Years Later, F1, Jurassic World Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, How To Train Your Dragon – and there are LOADS more still to come in the second half of this year alone. Omniplex's subscription MyOmniPass starts from just £11.99/€14.99 per month (depending on your location), which gets you a Super Saver seat for every single movie that gets released, as well as getting access to exclusive members-only previews before general release. MUSIC – Spotify Premium There are probably better/more affordable/etc. music streaming platforms out there (for example, the YouTube one we mentioned above), but in terms of ease-of-use, nothing seems to come close to YouTube. For £11.99/€11.99 per month (there are also Student, Duo, and Family Plans to look into), you'll get ad-free music, which you can download to listen to at any time, even when offline. Other obvious benefits include being able to listen to songs in any order, and organise you're listening queue (something not available on the Free Plan), and you're given access to the HQ audio versions of the tracks, as well as 15 hours per month of listening time from Spotify's audiobooks subscriber catalogue. However, speaking of books… BOOKS – Happily Ever After Book Box We don't know about you, but going in blind when trying to decide on what the next book you're going to invest your next few days with can be a daunting process. Outside of already enjoying the author's previous works or being given a specific recommendation from a third party, how do you pick your next book? We know we shouldn't judge the cover, but sometimes they do win us over… Thankfully, companies like the Happily Ever After Book Box do a lot of that heavy lifting for us. You simply tell them what your favourite genre is, and every month you'll get a new surprise book. Additionally, for £19.99 per month, along with the book, you'll also get a bookmark, a surprise beauty product, some vegan chocolate, a hot drink sachet, and a little note letting you know which animal charity your box has raised money for that month!

Xbox Game Pass loses a brilliant stealthy adventure and 6 other great games very soon
The Xbox Game Pass losses continue with the service ducking out of April with the loss of seven games. Sniper Elite 5 is on its way out of Xbox Game Pass, alongside a few other great games this month. Xbox Game Pass has had some ups and downs so far this year, but it's found itself on a mountaintop lately. The latest addition to the Xbox Game Pass roster came when Oblivion Remastered announced its surprise drop, landing on the service as well as across PC and PS5. It's undoubtedly a massive appearance from the iconic RPG, but it hasn't ended there, especially after GTA 5 returned to Xbox Game Pass in the second April service drop. Games have been firing out left, right, and centre for Game Pass subscribers, and though there have been some big losses like the Xbox Game Pass Yakuza Exodus that continued until no games from the franchise were left, it's still been a good time to be a subscriber. That doesn't mean the losses have ceased entirely, though. More games are set to leave the Xbox Game Pass service incredibly soon, and it's up to you to decide if their absence justifies the new games joining in – especially as one FPS series is losing a belter in the process. Here's what you need to know about the Xbox Game Pass games leaving as we enter May. Xbox Game Pass shows its poor aim As revealed when we took a look at the final April drop for Xbox Game Pass, here are the games set to leave the service on Wednesday, April 30: EA Sports NHL 23 (console, EA Play) Have a Nice Death (console, cloud, PC) Kona 2 Brume (console, cloud, PC) Sniper Elite 5 (console, cloud, PC) The Last Case of Benedict Fox (console, cloud, PC) Thirsty Suitors (console, cloud, PC) The Rewinder (console, cloud, PC) It's not an insignificant number of games leaving, of course, accentuated by the departure of Sniper Elite 5. It's a curious loss, especially as Sniper Elite: Resistance landed on the service in the January 2025 Xbox Game Pass update. Of course, players will be more allured by the most recent title, but to strip out the game that came directly before it is still strange after the series made a comfortable home on the pass. These losses are frustrating, and in a difficult turn for players, often forgotten about in the hype for new and incoming games, so make note of the games you want to play before they depart the service, or put to use the small discount you'll get on buying them before they're off the service entirely. It's a small price to pay for all of those day one releases.

Sony hits Türkiye with massive 55% PlayStation Plus price hike
Sony has announced a significant price increase for its PlayStation Plus subscription service in Türkiye, with the annual cost of the Deluxe package rising 55% to ₺4,266 from 24 June 2025, sparking backlash from players already contending with local economic challenges. Sony is facing criticism from Turkish gamers after confirming a steep rise in PlayStation Plus subscription prices, with the most expensive tier, Deluxe, increasing from ₺2,740 to ₺4,266 annually—a 55.69% hike. The Extra tier will also rise by a similar margin, from ₺2,340 to ₺3,645. The new pricing, announced via email to subscribers, will take effect from 24 June 2025. While official pricing for the Essential tier remains undisclosed, based on the same increase rate, a yearly subscription is expected to jump from ₺1,400 to around ₺2,180. This marks the second major hike in Türkiye after the 2023 adjustments, which saw price increases of up to 600% due to currency depreciation and inflation. The rising costs are prompting many players to reconsider their subscriptions or seek alternatives. PlayStation Plus offers online multiplayer access, monthly free games, discounts, cloud storage, and trials, and is available in Essential, Extra, and Deluxe tiers. Despite these benefits, the affordability of the service is becoming a growing concern for Turkish users. Sony stated that the changes aim to maintain service quality and deliver 'high-value games and features.' However, critics argue that such increases make the platform less accessible, particularly in Türkiye, where economic volatility continues to affect consumer spending. Some users have reported renewing subscriptions at current rates to avoid the increase, with one case from 2023 resurfacing of a player who prepaid 27 years of service to lock in lower rates. Others are cancelling their subscriptions or turning to competitors. Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, which includes a large game library and currently costs around ₺2,500 per year for the Ultimate tier in Türkiye, is gaining attention as a more affordable option. EA Play and other niche services are also emerging as viable alternatives for some players. Sony has yet to confirm whether similar increases will apply to other PlayStation Plus packages, though users are bracing for comparable adjustments.
