Officials forced to shut down popular beach due to concerning infestation: 'This decision comes after extensive consultation' Warmer temperatures mean more bugs, like disease-carrying mosquitoes and ticks. In Bridgeport, Connecticut, Asian longhorned ticks –– among other tick species –– established themselves on Pleasure Beach and prompted officials to close the area, the Bridgeport Daily Voice reported. What's happening? Multiple tick species were discovered on the beach, including the invasive and disease-carrying Asian longhorned tick. The Asian longhorned tick is spreading across the Northeast, according to the Bridgeport Daily Voice, and its infestation of Pleasure Beach shut down the summertime destination. "We regret to inform everyone that Pleasure Beach will remain closed to the public for the 2025 summer season. This decision comes after extensive consultation with state environmental experts," the city of Bridgeport wrote on Facebook. Along with ticks, however, officials observed an increase in protected Audubon bird species nesting on the beach. These birds reinforced the decision to close Pleasure Beach, the city of Bridgeport explained, and caused experts to reevaluate human activity in the area. Why are ticks concerning? Like other ticks, the Asian longhorned tick can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis, according to the Bridgeport Daily Voice. It can also spread Ehrlichia chaffeensis, bacteria that causes the potentially life-threatening disease ehrlichiosis. The species presents concerns due to its ability to reproduce asexually, too. A single female Asian longhorned tick can produce an entire colony, the Bridgeport Daily Voice explained, allowing it to rapidly expand its numbers. Additionally, disease-carrying ticks and insects are becoming more prevalent as warmer temperatures enable them to propagate to more areas, such as Pleasure Beach. To address the infestation at Pleasure Beach, officials announced the city of Bridgeport "will be conducting a series of treatment and containment efforts throughout the area." These efforts will promote public health and environmental safety, according to the city. The city also stated it will monitor conditions and open the beach once it is safe to do so, hopefully next summer. Until then, individuals can take actions to prevent tick-borne diseases by reducing their exposure to ticks. Wearing long clothing and applying insect repellent can keep the disease-carrying arachnids off of you in tick-prone places like grassy or wooded areas, the CDC recommended. Ford Says It's Made an EV Breakthrough—So Are Cheaper EVs Coming?
Ford will have a "Model T moment" when it announces a new EV strategy next month, according to CEO Jim Farley. The automaker is hosting an event on August 11, where Farley says the company will announce plans for a "breakthrough" EV and EV platform. According to Farley, the new strategy will help Ford position itself against competition from Chinese automakers. Anyone know what year it is? Speaking on an earnings call on July 30, Farley revealed to investors that the company is planning to announce a new EV strategy in August, which will help position the brand against competition from Chinese automakers. Ford "On Aug. 11, that will be a big day for all of us at Ford," Farley said on the call. "We will be in Kentucky to share more about our plans to design and build a breakthrough electric vehicle and a platform in the U.S. This is a Model-T moment for us at Ford. A chance to bring a new family of vehicles to the world that offer incredible technology, efficiency, space, and features." So, in addition to announcing its next electric offering, Ford is also planning to lay out its entire EV strategy, including a new electric platform. Reporting from last year confirmed that Ford was using a small "skunkworks" team to launch a flexible new EV platform capable of building several vehicles "at volume." While the company wouldn't pinpoint exactly what kinds of vehicles those would be, it did confirm that the new platform's focus would be on smaller, low-cost, and profitable vehicles. Specifically, the new models will be targeting competition from Chinese automakers, which Farley has been vocal about in the past. Speaking on a podcast in October 2024, Farley confirmed he was daily driving a Xiaomi SU7, and that he didn't want to give it up—making him realize that Ford would need to make drastic changes to compete. Brazil grants BYD exemption from EV tariff hike, but not for as long as sought
Brazil announced a compromise in a dispute between Chinese EV maker BYD and traditional carmakers on Thursday, granting the company a short-term tariff break while moving forward with hikes that will hit it more aggressively in the long run. The decision was reached in a closed-door session of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) on Wednesday but not released publicly until Thursday. It follows weeks of heavy lobbying on both sides, with carmakers warning of mass lay-offs and BYD accusing rivals of trying to shut out competition Under the measure, BYD will be allowed to import up to US$463 million worth of semi-assembled electric and hybrid vehicles over a six-month period without paying import taxes. This tariff-free window will apply during the first half of 2026, offering short-term relief as BYD ramps up local production. Separately, the government decided to bring forward a previously scheduled levy increase. The import tariff for electric and hybrid vehicle kits will now rise to 35 per cent in January 2027, a year and a half earlier than the original July 2028 timeline. Fully assembled vehicles will reach the same 35 per cent rate by July 2026, as previously planned. BYD had requested a reduced tariff through mid-2026 to ease the ramp-up of its new manufacturing plant in Camaçari, Bahia State. The company, investing R$5.5 billion (US$978 million) in the facility, argued that temporary relief was necessary as it builds up its local production capacity. But the proposal triggered an immediate backlash. In a joint letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers, or Anfavea, warned that the exemption could put R$180 billion in planned investment at risk and eliminate as many as 50,000 jobs.
