'Frieren: Beyond Journey's End' Season 2 Debuts Trailer, 'The Apothecary Diaries' Lands Sequel
It's still a while before the next chapter of Frieren's journey kicks off, but Crunchyroll has treated fans to a sneak peek of what's to come. The streamer showcased the first trailer for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 at Anime Expo 2025 on 4 July, confirming its previously announced January 2026 release, alongside the reveal of a new director. Tomoya Kitagawa, who previously contributed storyboards and directed multiple episodes of the first season, is directing the sophomore outing, taking over the reins from Keiichiro Saito. The latter, best known for his work on Bocchi the Rock! , will oversee production as the supervising director, joining producer Yuichiro Fukushi ( One-Punch Man ), assistant director Daiki Harashina ( takt op. Destiny ), series composer Tomohiro Suzuki ( One-Punch Man ), and character designers Takasemaru ( Violet Evergarden ), Keisuke Kojima ( 100 Metres ), and Yuri Fujinaka ( SPY x FAMILY CODE: White ) on the creative team. Seiko Yoshioka, who worked on background art for Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo , is handling the concept art. As previously reported, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 will be helmed by returning animation studio Madhouse. The anime is based on the original manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe and premiered with a two-hour special on 29 September 2023. It became a critical darling over 28 episodes, earning nominations for Anime of the Year and scoring wins for Best Drama, Best Director, Best Background Art, and Best Supporting Character at this year's Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The epic fantasy isn't the only popular series to receive a follow-up. Following its season two finale in Japan, a sequel to The Apothecary Diaries was also announced during the annual event. No release date was shared for the forthcoming Season 3, but the anime's official account teased that the story will move to 'a new land'. Based on the original light novels by Natsu Hyuuga and illustrator Touko Shino, the historical drama series is described as follows: ' Maomao lived a peaceful life with her apothecary father. Until one day, she's sold as a lowly servant to the emperor's palace. But she wasn't meant for a compliant life among royalty. So when imperial heirs fall ill, she decides to step in and find a cure! This catches the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official who promotes her. Now, she's making a name for herself solving medical mysteries! Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 – Release date, cast updates and what to expect next
By Aman Shukla Published on July 5, 2025, 18:00 IST Last updated July 5, 2025, 19:02 IST Okay, anime fans, let's talk about Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2! After that heart-tugging, jaw-dropping first season, we're all dying to know what's next for Frieren and her crew. We've scoured the latest news for you—here's the scoop on when Season 2 might hit, who's in the cast, and what adventures are waiting. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 Release Date So, here's the big news: Season 2 is locked in for January 2026! They dropped this bombshell at a talk show with the voice cast on March 5, 2025. No exact day yet, but I'm betting on a Friday, probably January 2 or 9, 2026, since that's when new anime usually kick off. A while back, some of us were crossing our fingers for 2025, but Studio Madhouse is taking their sweet time to make sure it's as gorgeous as Season 1. The manga had a short break too, so January 2026 feels like a smart move to keep the quality sky-high. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait! Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 Expected Cast The gang's all here, or at least, it looks that way! The main voice actors are likely returning. Here's who we expect: Atsumi Tanezaki as Frieren, our favorite elven mage who's still figuring out what it means to live forever. as Frieren, our favorite elven mage who's still figuring out what it means to live forever. Kana Ichinose as Fern, the badass apprentice who's now a first-class mage. as Fern, the badass apprentice who's now a first-class mage. Chiaki Kobayashi as Stark, the sweet warrior who's totally stealing Fern's heart (you'll see). as Stark, the sweet warrior who's totally stealing Fern's heart (you'll see). Nobuhiko Okamoto as Himmel, the hero who keeps popping up in those tear-jerker flashbacks. as Himmel, the hero who keeps popping up in those tear-jerker flashbacks. Hiroki Tochi as Heiter and Yoji Ueda as Eisen, probably showing up in more memory scenes. There was a scare when Atsumi Tanezaki said she was taking a health break earlier this year, but word is she's recovering and should be back as Frieren. Phew! One sad note: the voice actor for Flamme passed away, so if Flamme shows up, we might hear a new voice. Also, new characters are coming—think folks from the mage exam and beyond—but we'll probably hear about their voice actors closer to the premiere. What to expect in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 The Story and Manga Stuff Season 1 wrapped up around chapter 60 of the manga, right after that intense First-Class Mage Exam arc. Season 2 will pick up from chapter 61, starting with the Continued Northern Travels arc. Picture Frieren, Fern, and Stark trekking through the snowy Northern Plateau, running into new allies and some serious trouble. There's talk of a proctor and an examinee from the exam showing up, which sounds awesome. After that, we might get the Golden Land arc, which manga readers are obsessed with—think epic fights and some wild plot twists. If we're lucky, the Goddess' Monument arc could sneak in too, diving deep into the world's secrets. It's going to be that perfect mix of quiet, emotional moments and big, heart-pounding battles. Frieren's still chasing Aureole, the place where souls rest, and her journey's going to hit us right in the feels. Animation and Vibes Studio Madhouse is back, and they're not messing around. Keiichiro Saito is directing again, and Evan Call is handling the music, so expect those chills-inducing soundtracks. They dropped a teaser image in March 2025 of Frieren, Fern, and Stark chilling by a hot spring, and it's giving all the cozy yet bittersweet vibes we love. Madhouse's animation is always next-level, so I'm already hyped for those glowing spells and sweeping landscapes. What's the Story Really About? Frieren's still grappling with being an elf who lives forever while humans come and go. Season 2 will dig into her thoughts on loss, friendship, and what it all means. Fern and Stark's bond is going to grow—maybe with some cute romantic hints—and we'll get more flashbacks with Himmel that'll probably make us cry. It's that slow, thoughtful storytelling with just enough action to keep you glued. Ahmedabad Plane Crash Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication .
