Zayn Malik references racism he faced as One Direction member in new song
Photo: Zayn Malik/Instagram Zayn Malik (pic) is baring his soul through music once again — and this time, he's seemingly confronting the racism he faced as the only South Asian member of the global pop phenomenon One Direction. On Saturday, the 32-year-old singer previewed a snippet of his upcoming track Fuchsia Sea on Instagram. The emotionally charged rap sees Malik delve into themes of erasure, tokenism and racial prejudice, offering a rare and pointed reflection on his time in the boy band that catapulted him to global stardom. 'I worked hard in a White band, and they still laughed at the Asian,' Malik raps in the teaser, adding, 'Got my back against the wall so much they think I got a brick fascination… I've got a round trip to the constellation.' Fans immediately picked up on the references to his experience in One Direction — where he was the only non-white member alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and the late Liam Payne. The group, formed in 2010 on The X Factor UK, became a worldwide sensation before Malik's abrupt departure in 2015. While Malik has spoken in the past about mental health struggles and wanting privacy, this appears to be the first time he has publicly suggested that racial dynamics within the group or industry may have played a role in his decision to leave. The lyrics struck a chord with many listeners, particularly South Asian fans who have long celebrated Malik as one of the few brown artistes to break into mainstream Western pop. The release tease comes months after Malik marked the 10th anniversary of his One Direction exit by performing the band's ballad Night Changes during his Stairway To The Sky tour stop in Mexico City. 'It's the first time I've sung that song in 10 years,' he told the crowd. 'Thank you, that was (expletive) amazing. I almost cried.' Malik has maintained a relatively low profile since leaving the group but re-entered the public eye earlier this year when he reunited with Styles, Tomlinson, and Horan at Payne's funeral in November 2024. For now, Fuchsia Sea remains unreleased, but Malik's brief clip is making waves as a long-overdue reckoning. – Dawn/Asia News Network

Zayn Malik addresses racism he faced in One Direction on new song
Zayn Malik is set to release a song about facing racism during his time in One Direction. The 32-year-old pop star shot to fame alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and the late Liam Payne in one of the biggest boy bands in the world in 2010. Zayn quit the What Makes You Beautiful group in 2015, and pursued a solo career. He's now previewed a track called Fuchsia Sea on Instagram, on which he sings: 'I worked hard in a white band / And they still laughed at the Asian." A song of the same name already appeared on Zayn's 2024 solo album Room Under The Stairs, so it's unclear whether it's simply been updated or will be a new song entirely. The clip of the song teases that it's "coming soon". He captioned the post: "Zaddy's home." Zayn - who is of Pakistani heritage on his father's side - was previously compared to suspected terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev by Bill Maher on late-night television in the US, leading to a petition for him to apologise. Opening about the racism he's faced, Zayn told The Sun in 2012: 'Nasty things [were said] like I'm a terrorist, and this and that. 'How can you justify that? How can you call me that and get away with it?' Meanwhile, Zayn "almost cried" as he sang One Direction's Night Changes on the anniversary of his departure from the band. The singer was visibly moved as he performed the last single he released with his 1D bandmates in Mexico City in March. He told the crowd at Palacio De Los Deportes arena in a clip circulated on social media: "It's the first time I sang that song in 10 years. "Thank you, that was f****** amazing. I almost cried at one point. This is insane." In a social media statement, the Pillow Talk hitmaker announced on the day of his exit: "My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. 'I'd like to apologize to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. "I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.' He reunited with bandmates Harry, Niall and Louis at Liam's funeral late last year. The 31-year-old star plunged to his death from the balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, 2024.

Zayn previews 'Fuchsia Sea' with striking lyric on race
Zayn Malik has shared a preview of a new track titled Fuchsia Sea, in which he appears to reference racism he experienced during his time in the band One Direction. The teaser, posted to his Instagram on Saturday, includes the lyric: "Cause I have been conscious of every connotation / And while they concentrate on their elevation / I've got a round trip to the constellation / I'm a convert to the concert, and I did that for inflation, 'cause I worked hard in a white band, and they still laughed at the Asian." The verse has drawn widespread attention for addressing his experience as the only non-white member of the boy band One Direction. Zayn's father is Pakistani, and his mother is of English and Irish descent. While Zayn hasn't confirmed a release date, he noted the track is "coming soon." The song appears to be part of a return to music following his 2024 album Room Under the Stairs. In recent years, he has largely stayed out of the public eye, making only select appearances and releasing music sporadically. On Liam's death One such rare appearance came in late 2024, when Zayn reunited with former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan to attend the funeral of Liam Payne. Liam died on October 16 last year at the age of 31, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Zayn was one of the founding members of One Direction, formed during the 2010 season of The X Factor alongside Harry, Niall, Liam, and Louis. The band quickly rose to international fame, selling millions of records and becoming one of the biggest pop acts of the decade. In 2015, Zayn officially announced his departure from the group in a statement, released on the group's social media, that said, "I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart." He continued, "I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry, and Niall." Zayn's exit came midway through the band's On the Road Again tour, which the remaining members completed without him. Since then, he has pursued a solo career, exploring genres beyond pop, including R&B and hip-hop. Liam spoke about Zayn's departure during One Direction's appearance on The Late Late Show, saying, "We were surprised. I think we all knew the general vibe that Zayn was feeling. There were certain parts of this job that Zayn loved and certain parts of the job that he didn't." He shared their honest reactions, "Like I said, we were angry at first, but then it was just a bit disappointing." After the rest of the band finished their tour, they also went on an indefinite hiatus and focused on their solo careers. Zayn briefly reflected on his time in One Direction during a concert in Mexico City in March, where he performed Night Changes, a track from the band's 2014 album Four. He told the crowd, "It's the first time I've sung that song in 10 years. Thank you, that was f--king amazing. I almost cried." His upcoming track Fuchsia Sea appears to be one of his most personal to date, with lyrics directly referencing his racial identity and his experience in the band.

Zayn Malik Talks About Racism in Teaser for Upcoming Track
British singer and former One Direction member, Zayn Malik, talked about racism in the teaser for his upcoming track 'Fuschia Sea'. The singer released the teaser on Saturday, July 6, on his social media, and a line from the track has gone viral. The verse is, "I worked hard in a White band, and they still laughed at the Asian." He is talking about his experiences while working with One Direction. Fans online are appreciating Malik opening up, with one fan saying, "From being laughed at for ur identify to rapping it with the kind of revolution we really needed ZAYN." This marks a notable shift in Malik's solo artistry, continuing a path of introspection initiated with tracks like "Alienated" from Room Under the Stairs. Now, he's venturing into more provocative territory, using 'Fuchsia Sea' as a medium to directly articulate his lived experience. It's unfiltered, defiant, and unquestionably personal. What's Next? Zayn has tagged the teaser with 'coming soon,' but offered no firm release date. As anticipation builds, 'Fuchsia Sea' is shaping up to be a watershed moment—not just musically, but culturally—by giving a voice to the discrimination he's previously kept private.
