MasterChef fans start campaign for telly favourite to land hosting spot after John Torode and Gregg Wallace axed
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MASTERCHEF fans have declared another TV chef as their favourite to take over from John Torode after his exit from the long-running programme. Torode was axed from the BBC favourite after 20 years this weekend, after a complaint of racist language was upheld against him during the investigation into co-host Gregg Wallace's behaviour. The BBC was also unable to specify the time or date of the allegation, narrowing it down to '2018 or 2019'. Regardless, after the production team confirmed they would not be renewing his contract, Torode acknowledged in his own statement it was 'time to pass the cutlery to somebody else' when it came to the show. Now fans have started speculating over who could take his place, with Andi Oliver emerging the current favourite. Andi, mother of another presenting fave Miquita Oliver, has been host of Great British Menu for the past nine years – another BBC long-running cooking show that pits established chefs against each other in heats before the finale banquet. Now cooking show superfans believe she could be the saviour of the flailing show now that both of the hosts have been booted. Speaking on Reddit, one fan wrote: 'Probably jumping the gun on new presenters, But Andi Oliver and Lisa Goodwin-Allen were a great double act in GBM.' 'Andi Oliver, Grace [Dent] and Jay [Rayner],' responded another. "I think they're among a small group that would at least make it feel like there was a reason to keep watching. 'I suspect it'll be a mash up of one of the mainstays with a whole new person from the bottom drawer of the beeb to 'reinvigorate' the series though,' they added. Masterchef meltdown as BBC asked John Torode to RESIGN over 'racist remark' before Gregg Wallace sacking 'Andi would be beyond excellent,' said a second. 'I'd also love to see Jay Rayner in the role. What about a three presenter lineup?' The Story So Far Torode's exit comes eight months after co-host Gregg Wallace had multiple complaints made against him while on the set of MasterChef. Following the complaints, an inquiry carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin for production company Banijay produced a report that upheld 45 of 83 allegations of bad behaviour against Wallace. Of all the complaints, only one is believed to involve Torode in any way, with the chef reportedly making a 'racist remark' in a social situation, without malicious intent and with an immediate apology. A source close to him saying he was 'absolutely devastated to have been pulled into this mess'. The dad of four later said in a statement: 'The allegation is I did so sometime between 2018 or 2019, in a social situation, and the person I was speaking with did not believe it was intended in a malicious way and I apologised immediately afterwards. "I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. 'However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. 'I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence.' 6 Andi has been hosting Great British Menu for 10 years Credit: BBC 6 John and Gregg have both been axed from MasterChef Credit: Alamy

The Sandbox Launches Largest LAND Sale to Date on GBM Auctions
Over 110 LANDs and 220 avatars go live in the metaverse's most IP-rich auction to date, all powered by GBM's Win-Win protocol. The Sandbox, the leading social gaming metaverse, is partnering exclusively once again, with GBM Auctions to launch its largest set of auctions for LAND to date. The drop includes 110 LANDs (including 4 Estates exclusive to this sale) and 220 branded avatars across 22 IPs, all distributed via GBM Auctions' Win-Win auction protocol. In a first for The Sandbox, auctions will precede its own platform sale, highlighting a shift in how LAND is brought to market and underscoring GBM's role as the auction layer for Web3-native asset distribution. A Fairer and More Transparent Way to Buy LAND Traditional NFT sales often reward speed or capital, using first-come-first-serve mechanics or gas wars. GBM's Win-Win model changes the experience by rewarding every participant rather than just the final buyer. With GBM's Win-Win auction model, even outbid participants are rewarded. Every bid: Is fully refunded if outbid Comes with an incentive reward based on auction mechanics Contributes to true, onchain price discovery The Win-Win model flips the typical auction dynamic on its head. Instead of punishing latecomers or smaller bidders, it turns participation itself into a value-generating act, transforming auctions from winner-takes-all battles into high-engagement, trustless events where every bid matters and every bidder benefits. 'We're thrilled to bring this expanded LAND auction to our community for the Training Grounds LAND sale through GBM. Their Win-Win Auction model offers a new, gamified way for people to enter the ecosystem and build the metaverse with us. ' - Cédric Neumann, The Sandbox NFT Sales Director 'This is the biggest LAND and avatar sale we've hosted with The Sandbox, and a blueprint for how branded assets should be distributed in the open metaverse.' - Hugo McDonaugh, Co-Founder & CEO, GBM What's in the Drop The auction will feature 80 regular LANDs, 26 premium LANDs, and four estates, including three 3x3 plots and one 6x6 estate; the estates are exclusively available through GBM and not sold on The Sandbox's platform. In addition to the LAND, this drop includes 220 avatars from 22 different brands, with 10 avatars per brand available via auction. Participating IPs include well-known names like Cirque du Soleil, with more to be revealed during the campaign. Timeline and Activation The Sandbox and GBM kicked off proceedings by co-host a live X Space on 14 July, featuring NFT Sales Director Cédric Neumann, Stream Product Owner PandaPops, and GBM Co-Founder Hugo McDonaugh, who discussed the drop and how the Win-Win auction model works. Users can check out the recording of the Spaces here. The X Space was followed by The Sandbox's blog post and email campaign to its whole community base. The auctions officially went live on 15 July at 2:00 PM UTC and is running for seven days, closing on 22 July. All auctions are primary listings only; assets aren't available through open marketplaces or secondary resale during this campaign. Why This Drop Matters This is the first time The Sandbox is leading with auctions before launching the public sale on its own platform, a shift from its typical sales sequence. Estates included in this drop are also exclusively available via GBM, making them inaccessible through any other marketplace or channel. With avatars and LANDs from more than 20 brands, this is one of the most multi-dimensional and IP-rich activations to date. Powered by GBM's protocol-native incentive system, the drop ensures every bidder receives value, not just the final winner. How to Join the Auction To view and participate in the auctions, once live, users can visit: All auctions will use GBM's Win-Win model, ensuring every bid counts, and every participant receives value, even if they're outbid. About GBM Auctions GBM is the auction protocol redefining how value is distributed onchain. At the heart of GBM is its innovative Win-Win auction model, which rewards every participant, not just the winner. This sets a new standard for price discovery and value alignment across Web3. GBM has powered over $200M in volume and distributed more than $6M in rewards to date. About The Sandbox The Sandbox, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, is an immersive metaverse platform in which users play, create, and monetize unique experiences alongside their favorite brands, IPs, and celebrities across gaming, entertainment, music, art, and more. The Sandbox leverages web3 technologies to fully enable end-user creation and creator economies, disrupting existing platforms by providing both players and creators with true ownership of their assets, creations, and rewards as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Common food swap linked to 'aggressive' cancer, study finds
Experts found a worrying link when looking at the effects on mice A recent study from China has raised alarm bells over the link between aspartame, a common artificial sweetener, and glioblastoma, the deadliest type of primary brain tumour, reports News Medical. The sweetener is often used in place of sugar, and research published in Scientific Reports, used mouse models to examine into the specific changes aspartame induces in gut bacteria and its subsequent effect on glioblastoma progression. The study suggests that aspartame consumption could foster conditions in the gut conducive to tumour growth. Notably, increased intake of aspartame was associated with a decrease in Rikenellaceae family bacteria levels in the gut, which have been implicated in various health problems including obesity, Parkinson's disease, and HIV. Furthermore, the research identified a link between aspartame use and gene regulation within glioblastoma tumours. Researchers said: "Our findings not only provide critical evidence for evaluating the safety of artificial sweeteners but also offer a comprehensive assessment of their impact on tumour progression. "These insights open new avenues for GBM treatment strategies, including gene-targeted therapies and microbial-based interventions, among others." The team plans to extend their research to further understand the effects of aspartame-induced changes on metabolism and the tumour microenvironment. A previous collaborative report, involving bodies like the International Agency for Research on Cancer, has tagged aspartame as 'possibly carcinogenic'. This categorisation suggests that it might have the potential to cause cancer in humans, although definitive proof is lacking. The report has set the acceptable daily intake of aspartame at 40mg per kilogram of body weight. So a person weighing 80kg should not exceed a daily aspartame consumption of 3.2g. Although this may appear to be a generous limit, aspartame is present in many common products, particularly those branded as 'diet' or sugar-free. For instance, a single can of certain fizzy drinks could contain as much as 200mg of aspartame. Aspartame is also an ingredient in various other products, such as some medications and chewable vitamins. According to experts at ZOE, it's around 200 times sweeter than traditional sugar. Despite assurances of its safety from international regulatory authorities, researchers have been voicing their concerns about aspartame through numerous studies over the years. Yet, a 2019 BMJ review analysing these studies concluded that there were no significant health risks or benefits linked to artificial sweeteners, mainly due to the fact that most studies involved too few participants, were short-term, or were not of high quality. In line with this, a 2022 World Health Organisation review also remarked: "There is (a) suggestion of negative health effects with long-term use, but the evidence is ultimately inconclusive." The 'adverse health impacts' highlighted in the review encompassed issues such as obesity, type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even mortality. However, experts from ZOE offered a glimmer of hope: "Entirely avoiding aspartame would be incredibly challenging, and it might not be necessary. A diet with a wide variety of plant-based foods is the healthiest choice. "And it's less healthy to consume high amounts of ultra-processed foods, which are more likely to contain aspartame. So, whenever you can, opt for fresh ingredients, fruits and vegetables, pulses, nuts, seeds, and the like. "Aim to have 30 different plant foods each week. That way, your intake of ultra-processed foods, and therefore aspartame, will naturally decline."

India to host international manuscript heritage conference in September
India will host the first-ever international Manuscript Heritage Conference in September, which will be attended by global scholars, thought leaders and cultural custodians in the subject. The three-day conference, titled 'Reclaiming India's Knowledge Legacy Through Manuscript Heritage', is being organised from September 11-13 in the national capital as part of the launch of the 'Gyan Bharatam Mission'. The conference will also commemorate Swami Vivekananda's Chicago address (September 11, 1893), symbolising India's intellectual and spiritual global vision, official sources said. The Centre had announced the 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' (GBM) in the Union Budget 2025–26, for reviving and expanding the vision of the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) launched in 2003. The GBM seeks to preserve, digitise, and disseminate manuscript knowledge, integrate it with modern technologies, and foster a new generation of scholars and institutions to carry the legacy forward. The conference will be graced by various eminent dignitaries of India, and will feature keynotes and participation by global scholars, thought leaders, and cultural custodians. There will also be numerous side events like an exhibition on Indian Manuscripts and Script Heritage, an exhibition of manuscripts inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World, live demonstrations of conservation and digitisation tools, along with hands-on workshops and a special space for startups in the field. The Union Culture Ministry has also invited original research papers, case studies, and conceptual frameworks to be presented on themes like, Conservation and Restoration of Manuscripts, Survey, Documentation, and Metadata Standards, Digitisation Tools, Platforms, and Protocols (HTR, AI, IIIF), Paleography, Codicology, and Script Training Initiatives and Legal and Ethical Aspects of Manuscript Custodianship. India possesses one of the richest manuscript heritages in the world, with an estimated 10 million ancient manuscripts. These span subjects like philosophy, science, medicine, literature, Vedic rituals, mathematics, astrology, vāstu, Sanskriti, and Indian arts and darśana — often in multiple scripts and languages and housed in institutions like temples, mathas, monasteries, Jaina Bhandāras, archives, libraries, and private collections, according to the Brochure for the event.
