The £319 launch price drops to £199 for those who click the 'trade in' option. Galaxy Watch users might want to stay away from testing QPR1 betas
Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Galaxy Watch owners are reporting problems when using Samsung's wearables with Android 16 QPR1 beta releases. Issues include failure to pair, connections dropping, and Samsung apps repeatedly crashing. For the moment, the only permanent solution seems to be going back to Android 16 stable. Getting early access to in-development software can be a lot of fun. Plenty of us participate in testing programs for some of our favorite apps, both in the interest of helping to make them better and getting to enjoy a sneak preview of new features before everybody else. That extends to software platforms, as well, with Google offering its Android Beta for Pixel program — and as of just a week ago, a new Canary program for even earlier access. But this kind of testing doesn't happen without some level of risk, and that's something that wearable fans might want to keep in mind. Any time you're testing a new version of Android, there's the potential that things are going to break. Sometimes, those failures can reasonably be expected, like issues with Wallet tap-to-pay not operating properly on beta builds. And while we tend to go into trying out software like this reasonably well informed of the potential pitfalls, apparently there's always still going to be room to surprise us. The latest problem we're hearing about concerns Samsung's Galaxy Watch wearables and users running Android 16 QPR betas. Over on Reddit, a thread started earlier this month by user Ecstatic_Estate_6625 has only been growing and growing, with users reporting pairing failures across a number of different Galaxy Watch models (via 9to5Google). Some users seem to get pairing to work, but then run into trouble with their connection dropping, or Samsung software crashing. 9to5Google reports that in its testing the connected phone got into a loop of trying to download Samsung's Watch Manager plugin, failing, and — you guessed it — crashing. While we wish we had a fix to share that could keep you testing QPR1, for the moment the only real solution seems to be going back to stable Android 16. Google Gemini comes to Samsung's older Galaxy Watches
As promised earlier this year, Google Gemini AI has made its way to the Samsung Galaxy Watch8 series, and it is now expanding to some of the older Galaxy Watch models. The new Watch8 series models marked the initial roll-out of Gemini AI on WearOS, and Google promised to expand to more smartwatches running Wear OS 4 or newer. The only catch for Samsung watches is that you'll need a Galaxy Watch that's running the very latest One UI 8 Watch interface on top of Wear OS. As reported by SamMobile, the Gemini AI app is available to download on older Galaxy Watches, but it does not seem to replace the older Google Assistant on devices running versions prior to One UI 8, at least for now. Samsung already kicked off its One UI 8 Watch beta for Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro units so we should see the Galaxy Watch6 series and Galaxy Watch7 also updated in due time. Whether it's the newest Apple Watch Ultra, a flagship Galaxy Watch, or a cheaper fitness-based alternative like Fitbit or Garmin. Anyone on the lookout for an Android-pairing wearable, we've found a way to get a Samsung Watch completely free. The Galaxy Watch7 BT usually retails for more than £280, but it's been slashed to £0 for Carphone Warehouse shoppers. The catch is, consumers will have to buy a Samsung mobile to claim the 2024 model. As a tech commerce editor, scouring sites for deals and standout perks is something I do each day, and it's not often you see a free smartwatch offered to shoppers - I've rounded up exactly what shoppers need to do to qualify. First up, the handset. The deal is only available on the S24 FE device, the 'fan edition' of last year's S range. As a quick background, this model is designed to offer similar features to the Galaxy S24 range but cuts back on processor speeds and sensors to justify the cheaper price. Another thing worth flagging to S24 FE shoppers, is the handsets cameras aren't as advanced as the standard S24 range. In comparison to the S24 usual £759 price - or now £659 in Samsung's sale - the S24 FE is £599 at Carphone Warehouse. But there's also the option to pick an iD Mobile plan and spread the cost across a 24-month plan - although we'd should point out that this comes with an £89.99 upfront fee. Buying a brand-new mobile isn't the only way to get a good deal on a wearable accessory. Amazon is offering a cheaper price on the fitness Fitbit trackers - this Inspire 3 model is now £58.99. The Garmin Forerunner, which is a step up from Fitbit with advanced training guidance, is reduced to £122.99 at Amazon too. The next point to flag is crucial, and not one made obvious on the shopping listing. The free watch is only available to claim to shoppers who pick a specific colour of the S24 FE mobile - green to be precise. This can be found in the small print of the Samsung T&C's - which we trailed through, here. Once Samsung shoppers have bought the Galaxy S23 FE mobile, they have 30 days after purchase to claim the £0 Galaxy Watch, of course with proof of purchase and by the July 29 deadline. And there's lots of retailer options. Personally, this is a part of the offer which I rate, as shoppers can take their own time to compare prices about the participating retailers. Which include Sky Mobile, so ideal for pay-as-you-go consumers, Very, Asda Mobile and Argos (to name a few). For those contemplating rival Sky Mobile, the handset starts at £18 per month, with data added on top. The provider is also running an offer on data anyone who picks 25GB of monthly data will get it doubled for free for a 12-month period. The only downside to Sky is its longer plans, which compared to the above 24-month iD Mobile plan, it's a much longer contract at a minimum 36-months.
