Toyota To Go It Alone With New Supra Powered By In-House Turbo Hybrid

The current Supra will go out of production this year. (Photo by Anton Raharjo/Anadolu Agency via ... More Getty Images) Toyota will no longer be flirting with BMW when building the GR Supra. According to Japan's best-selling car magazine Best Car, the all-new 6th generation model is expected to surface in 2027, and will be powered by a Toyota-built 4-cylinder, turbocharged 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain, but still pumping out around 400-hp. After collaborating with BMW in 2019 to launch a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline powerplant for the Supra and Z4, Toyota's Gazoo Racing production division—which was responsible for joining forces with BMW—has finally decided to part ways with its German partner. Since the Supra went on sale in the U.S. in 2019, it sold over 24,000, in contrast to its sister car—the BMW Z4—which sold just over 13,000 units in the same five year time span. The Supra Final Edition spec differs between Japan and U.S. A limited edition version of just 300 Supra Final Edition models were launched in March 2025, and they sold out like hot cakes. Pumping out 434-hp in its Japan-spec guise, the last A90 Supra was priced in its home country at 15 million yen or around $101,000. In the U.S., however, around 100 units of a differently specced Mk V Final Edition were launched in April 2025 at Long Beach, California packing a lot less horsepower than its Japanese counterpart—down to 382-hp. According to Toyota, the North American spec did not get the Japanese engine upgrade but focused on other aspects like chassis and aerodynamic enhancements and an available 6-speed manual box. Also, compared to Japan's $100,000 model, the U.S.-spec Final Edition landed in showrooms for a more reasonable $69,085. As Toyota closes the chapter on the current A90 GR Supra, we expect it to go out of production by late 2025. According to Best Car, the all-new model, expected to debut by late-2027, will sit on a rear-wheel-drive platform and be powered by a Toyota-built turbocharged 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain pumping out around 400-hp. There has also been speculation in Best Car that Toyota are testing a second Supra prototype powered by a Mazda inline 6-cylinder engine, just like the e-Skyactiv G gasoline turbo mild hybrid engine found in the CX-70. But given the extra weight of this engine, Best Car leans towards the lighter, more fuel efficient, more nimble 2.0-liter unit as the powerplant to be employed.

Formula Drift Legend Denied Entry Into the US for Competition

One of the foremost names in Formula Drift, Daigo Saito, was recently denied entry into the United States after attempting to legally enter the country for a competition. Following a 10-year absence from the sport, Saito planned to make his return to Formula Drift Stateside, but was sent home by US Immigration. Saito posted a summary of the incident on his Instagram page, noting specifically that he was "not able to enter the United States," saying that he was "deported." You can read the full post below: Saito says that he left his house on June 26, 2025, for a 12-hour flight to the United States and was immediately met by immigration upon landing. Authorities took him into a private room before telling the racer that he was not allowed entry into the country with his current Visa Waiver Program (ESTA). Saito admits fault for "not understanding the ESTA Visa program," but he says that he believed he was covered for competition under his current Visa. Authorities then booked Saito on a flight to Amsterdam—"the complete opposite way I came from,' he says—after he reportedly offered to pay his way for a direct flight from Minneapolis to Japan, which was meet with hostility. He says: "They pretty much asked who the hell do I think I am and threatened me, either they will cuff me and throw me in jail or shut up and get on the flight to much treated as a criminal." We've reached out to Gazoo Racing for a statement. Toyota's Secret GT Supercar Just Climbed Goodwood in Camouflage

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Toyota's flagship GT car has been years in the making. We still don't know which badge it'll wear—whether it'll be labeled the Lexus LFR, as has been rumored, or something in the Gazoo Racing family. Either way, it's clearly getting close to arrival. Within the last several weeks, a road car prototype was spotted in California, adding to its testing at circuits around the world, including the Nürburgring. On Thursday, however, it was in England for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it climbed the hill at a leisurely pace alongside its racing counterpart. Both production and competition-spec cars were camouflaged, but the wraps conceal what looks to be final or near-final bodywork. The front and rear fascias and associated lighting appear to be about there, and some of the details, like the intakes at the base of the B pillars, and the way the side sills curve in just before the front wheels, look especially good. This is shaping up to be one seriously mean supercar, with its long hood, short rear deck, and low, wide stance. I'd describe it as a cross between a Mercedes SLS AMG and a Dodge Viper. You can spot the pair running at about 55 minutes into the livestream below, which is still ongoing as of writing. There are still a fair number of question marks surrounding the as-yet-unnamed Toyota halo machine. Chief among them is powertrain, though all rumors—and in this case, all sounds —clearly point to a V8, and likely one with forced induction. The big question is to what degree the internal combustion engine will be assisted by an electric motor. If Toyota opts for twin-turbo, hybrid power, the figures could be massive. But, as long as we've waited, we'll still have to hold on a bit longer for specifics. Got tips? Send 'em to tips@

Toyota 4 Cylinder Engine Set to Deliver 600 HP Shockwave

Toyota has taken a bold leap forward with the introduction of its revolutionary Toyota 4 cylinder engine, part of the new G20E lineup. This 2.0-liter gasoline engine was designed from the ground up to power the next generation of Gazoo Racing vehicles. Its first appearance in the GR Yaris M concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon showcased not only its technical prowess but also its astonishing performance, delivering between 400 and 450 horsepower from a compact, mid-rear-mounted layout featuring an IHI turbocharger. The Road to 600 Horsepower One of the most talked-about breakthroughs in performance engineering, this Toyota 4 cylinder engine has been confirmed by the brand's engineers—via Auto Motor und Sport—to be capable of pushing past the 600-horsepower threshold when paired with a larger turbo. That's nearly double the power output of the three-cylinder G16E GTS currently found in the GR Yaris. Despite facing constraints from global emissions standards, especially in Europe and North America, Toyota is determined to make this engine a benchmark of intelligent performance and efficiency. Designed for Flexibility The Toyota 4 cylinder engine isn't just powerful—it's also incredibly adaptable. It can be mounted in both front-engine longitudinal and mid-rear layouts, giving designers and engineers freedom to integrate it across a variety of platforms. This versatility opens the door for a potential revival of beloved Toyota sports cars, including the MR2, Celica, GR86, and even a future Supra model. Challenging the Segment Leaders Currently, the most powerful production engine in this class is the Mercedes-AMG M139L, delivering 469 horsepower. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ 440 MR followed closely at 440 horsepower in a very limited production run. But Toyota is setting its sights higher—the new Toyota 4 cylinder engine aims to outperform these benchmarks while remaining in a compact engine class. A New Era for Gazoo Racing More than just an engine, the Toyota 4 cylinder engine symbolizes the future of Gazoo Racing. It's built to serve as the foundation for a range of hybrid, electrified, and traditional sports cars. Whether it's racing on the Super GT circuits or powering high-performance street cars with a motorsport pedigree, this engine represents Toyota's commitment to innovation and adrenaline-fueled driving. Room to Grow Adding to its long-term potential, engineers designed the Toyota 4 cylinder engine with extra space between the cylinders, allowing for significant displacement expansion. This scalable architecture hints at a tuning capability reminiscent of the iconic 2JZ engine, offering enthusiasts a new platform to explore and elevate. In Summary: The Rise of a New Icon The GR Yaris M concept showcased the Toyota 4 cylinder engine with 400–450 hp. Toyota engineers confirmed it can exceed 600 hp with a larger turbo. Versatile design allows front or mid-rear installations. Scalable construction links it to the legendary performance of the 2JZ. With the Toyota 4 cylinder engine, the brand is poised to redefine what's possible from compact powerplants—delivering a perfect balance of efficiency, innovation, and raw power to fuel the next generation of Toyota performance cars.

Toyota Hypes New Four-Cylinder Engine: '600 HP Is Easily Possible'

It's been over a year since Toyota announced a new family of four-cylinder combustion engines , to be offered in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged flavors. These upcoming gas engines, planned with displacements of 1.5 liters and 2.0 liters, are said to be smaller and lighter. While efficiency is the primary goal, performance won't be overlooked. The larger of the two engines is getting the Gazoo Racing treatment, already previewed in the GR Yaris M concept. The wild mid-engine hot hatch took us by surprise when it debuted as a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. Sporting the new 'G20E' engine mounted above the rear axle, the pocket rocket featured an IHI turbocharger, pushing output to around 400-450 hp. However, German magazine Auto Motor und Sport has now learned from Toyota engineers that there's potential for much more: 'With a larger turbocharger, more than 600 hp is easily possible.' That would be more than double what the 'G16E-GTS' produces in the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and Lexus LBX Morizo RR with their turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine. However, while 600+ hp is technically achievable with a larger turbo, Toyota will likely run into a major obstacle: stricter regulations. It may (and probably will) be forced to detune the 'G20E' to reduce CO₂ emissions. However, even an output starting with a '4,' let alone a '5,' would be impressive. In race car applications, an uncorked version could fully exploit the engine's potential. Expect to see the new four-cylinder engine to power many performance cars, as the 2.0-liter is being engineered for both longitudinal and transverse installations. It can sit at the front or rear, making it a possible backbone for Gazoo Racing's future lineup. Toyota has teased a potential return of the Celica and/or MR2, while also promising that the Supra will live on beyond the current generation. A next-gen GR86 could also be a natural fit, assuming it's in development. Toyota told Auto Motor und Sport that it's been testing the 'G20E' in the GR Yaris M for some time. However, we recall sharing a video featuring a Lexus IS prototype over a year ago. The stripped-down sedan was fitted with one of the new engines and sounded highly promising , possibly featuring the most exciting member of the new four-cylinder lineup. At the time, Toyota's engine boss Takashi Uehara hyped the 'totally new engine' as being intended for 'car lovers who expect a little something extra.' Interestingly, one Toyota engineer strongly suggested the 'G20E' will be highly tunable (2JZ redux?): 'We left enough space between the cylinders so that the engine can be bored out considerably.' Another engineer claimed the Yaris M's 'performance is incredible,' adding that the hot hatch's wheelbase had to be slightly extended to accommodate the engine mounted behind the driver. It's worth noting that Toyota's new four-cylinder family is part of a broader initiative alongside two other Japanese automakers to extend the life of combustion engines . Mazda is developing rotary engines as range extenders, while Subaru continues refining its boxer engine. Hybridization is a shared objective, but the trio is also exploring carbon-neutral fuels like liquid hydrogen, biofuel, and synthetic fuel. Beating a dead horse? Toyota doesn't think so. In early 2024, Chairman Akio Toyoda said he doesn't believe EVs will ever exceed a 30% market share. However, a recent International Energy Agency (IEA) study found that over 20% of new cars sold last year worldwide didn't have a combustion engine. Additionally, BloombergNEF projects EV sales will increase by 25% in 2025. That report also predicts nearly two-thirds of global EV demand this year will come from China, followed by Europe at 17% and the United States at 7%.
