Lord Voldermort Casting Odds Latest: Here are the 9 actors in the frame to play the Dark Lord in the Harry Potter TV reboot
Production has now started on the new Harry Potter television series - with 22 cast members now revealed. The series will debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max - including in the UK where the channel is set to launch. An open casting call for young actors from the UK and Ireland was held last year - resulting in the new Harry, Ron and Hermione being cast, along with other younger characters such as Lavender Brown and Neville Longbottom. They join a cast of established actors who will once again bring the wizarding world of Hogwarts alive. It will be written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, whose previous screen credits include His Dark Materials, The Rook and The Man in the High Castle. Meanwhile Edinburgh-based author J.K. Rowling is on board as an executive producer. While we know who will play the majority of the main characters, there's still no word on who will play the evil Lord Voldermort - portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in the films. Here are the 9 actors the bookies reckon are in the frame for the role. 1 . Cillian Murphy - 2/1 The 2/1 favourite to play the Dark Lord is Cillian Murphy, who last year won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in 'Oppenheimer'. He would certainly be a real coup for the casting team. | Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Tom Hiddleston - 9/4 No stranger to huge franchaises - or with playing baddies - English actor Tom Hiddleston is best known for playing trickster god Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's 9/4 second favourite to become one of the most evil characters in the history of literature. | Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Paul Bettany - 3/1 Famous for playing J.A.R.V.I.S. and Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Paul Bettany have narrowed in recent weeks and he's now a 3/1 shot to be cast as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in arguably the world's second biggest franchaise. | Getty Images for Emirates Photo Sales 4 . George MacKay - 4/1 'Sunshine on Leith' star George Mackay wasn't even in the running a month ago, but now he's 4/1 fourth favourite to take over from Ralph Fiennes. | Getty Images Photo Sales

Edinburgh Victoria Street targeted by vandals as police investigate
At least 10 shops on Victoria Street in Edinburgh's Old Town had graffiti tags sprayed on their windows, stone walls and doors over the weekend. Police Scotland said it had received a report of the vandalism and inquiries were ongoing. Victoria Street is popular among tourists and influencers for its colourful buildings and cobblestone pavement. (Image: Getty Images) It is often cited as an inspiration for the fictional Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series. Shopkeepers have said that the street, which links George IV bridge and the Grassmarket, has been "wrecked" after the "absolutely mindless" vandalism. Andrew McRae, who owns three shops on Victoria Street, told BBC News: "I've been doing business in the Old Town for a number of years and I've never seen anything on this kind of scale before with one street being so badly targeted and damaged. READ MORE: Dog owners warned of 'toxic bacteria' after Scotland heatwave "Victoria Street is one of the most picturesque and beautiful streets in the city if not Scotland and a great deal of time and effort is spent by the independent business owners to keep it in that condition. "So to come in to work and see this trail of destruction – I was very shocked and it was very demoralising." Another shop owner, John Bowman, told the broadcaster: "I was annoyed like everyone else would be when I saw the graffiti. I've had to buy paint to cover it up as it won't clean off. "It's not good for tourism. The authorities should do something about it but they won't." Part of the graffiti attack at the weekend saw the 900-year-old St Giles' Cathedral targeted as well as other monuments and stone buildings in the Old Town, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Removing graffiti from historical buildings is a difficult task and can require specialist equipment and knowledge to do so without damaging the building. READ MORE: Warning not to swim in two Fife beaches due to pollution Stephen Jenkinson, City of Edinburgh Council's environment convener, said: "First and foremost, defacing any building with graffiti is a criminal offence and I'd encourage anyone with any information on the culprits to contact the police. "This type of mindless behaviour damages the local environment for everyone, whether they be residents or visitors, and wastes time and money on removing it. "We've invested in a dedicated graffiti team who will be happy to offer advice to private owners on how best to deal with it and, if requested, to remove it (on a cost recovery basis)."

LONDON, July 17 — Two stars of the Harry Potter films, including actress Emma Watson, were each banned from driving for six months Wednesday after being caught speeding in separate incidents. Watson, 35, who played Hermione Granger, the friend of boy wizard Potter in the hugely popular movie franchise, was banned for driving at 38 miles (61 km) an hour in a 30-mile zone in southeastern Banbury last July. Zoe Wanamaker, 76, who played Quidditch teacher Madame Hooch in Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, was banned for six months for her offence. She had been caught driving at 46 miles an hour in a 40-mile zone of the M4 motorway in southeastern Berkshire last August. The cases were dealt with separately by a lower magistrates court in the town of High Wycombe. Neither of the stars attended the hearings, at which they were each fined £1,044 (RM5,936). Watson, who was stopped while driving her blue Audi, has been studying at Oxford University. Her lawyer told the court that although she was a student 'she is in a position to pay the fine'. — AFP
