Lokayukta pulls up Bengaluru officials over inaction at Sompura lake
Bengaluru: The Lokayukta has reprimanded civic officials from multiple departments for failing to stop the entry of untreated sewage into Sompura lake near Banashankari 6th Stage, warning of possible disciplinary action if directions on rejuvenation work are not implemented. At a review hearing late last week, Lokayukta Justice BS Patil expressed dissatisfaction with the BBMP, BWSSB, BDA, and the revenue department for not finalising the location of an intermediate sewage pumping station (ISPS), which is key to preventing sewage inflow into the lake. "This case has been going on since 2018 and the issue has not been resolved fully yet," Justice Patil said, noting the lack of ground-level action despite repeated orders. The Lokayukta had, in a previous hearing on May 13, directed officials to finalise the ISPS location and speed up work. The next hearing is on Aug 22. Justice Patil also directed BWSSB officials to consult the CEO of the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority (KTCDA) if they faced hurdles in securing space at the lake's periphery for the ISPS. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo While both BBMP and BWSSB had previously informed the court that the tender process was under way, the recent hearing revealed a lack of progress. The case was initially registered suo motu by the Lokayukta after reports emerged of untreated sewage and leachate from a nearby BBMP-run waste treatment plant contaminating the lake. Though a 0.5 million litres per day (MLD) ISPS was first proposed, the plan was later upgraded to 8 MLD. BDA officials had been tasked with identifying and providing the necessary land — a step yet to be completed.

19th National Statistics Day celebrated
Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) Department of Statistics marked the 19th National Statistics Day to commemorate 133rd birth anniversary of Prashanth Chandra Mahalanobis, considered the 'Father of Indian Statistics'. The programme was organised in association with the Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) Data Science Centre, Tirupati, on Sunday. ISPS honorary president Prof. P. Rajasekhara Reddy stressed on the need for the recently-opened Data Science Centre to promote Statistics among the younger generation, who are reportedly less inclined towards this field of science. He also shed light on the courses to be offered by the centre from the academic year 2025-26. 'The Data Science Centre will be a knowledge hub for many budding statisticians and will serve as a consultancy centre for applied researchers,' Prof. Reddy said. Prof. V. Uma, Vice-Chancellor of SPMVV, who inaugurated the Prof M. Mathai Self Study Library at the centre, called statistics an indispensable subject playing a vital role in any field of research. Prof. Venkat Ikkurthy, a US-based statistician and researcher, highlighted the need for a dedicated team of well trained statistical experts to address the challenging issues that arise in Machine Learning and also to extend their expertise in Artificial Intelligence.

Maritime security raised to level 2 for Indian ports amid tensions
The Directorate General of Shipping has increased maritime security for Indian ports, terminals, and Indian-flagged vessels to "MARSEC Level 2 or heightened security", considering the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, a senior government official said. The directive was issued on May 8, the official added. The Directorate General of Shipping functions under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), forms a crucial part of the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention. It was adopted in response to growing global concerns over maritime security, especially in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. One of the core components of the ISPS Code is the classification of security levels. These levels are designed to ensure that ships and port facilities can operate securely under varying threat environments. Security Level 2 involves maintaining of appropriate additional protective security measures for a defined period of time, in response to a heightened risk. This level is activated before an incident occurs, often as a precautionary measure based on credible information. Level 2 requires escalation of standard procedures and close monitoring of threat updates. Earlier this month, India banned ships bearing the flag of Pakistan from visiting any Indian port. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday conducted a comprehensive review of key maritime projects to ensure normal cargo movement. He directed officials to ensure that the business remains normal.
