Apple Intelligence gets new capabilities across devices

Developers can now access the Apple Intelligence on-device foundation model to power private, intelligent experiences within their apps, the company said during its 'WWDC25' event here. These Apple Intelligence features are available for testing starting today, and will be available to users with supported devices set to a supported language this fall. 'The models that power Apple Intelligence are becoming more capable and efficient, and we're integrating features in even more places across each of our operating systems,' said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. 'We're also taking the huge step of giving developers direct access to the on-device foundation model powering Apple Intelligence, allowing them to tap into intelligence that is powerful, fast, built with privacy, and available even when users are offline. We think this will ignite a whole new wave of intelligent experiences in the apps users rely on every day. We can't wait to see what developers create,' he added. Apple Intelligence features will be coming to eight more languages by the end of the year: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (traditional), and Vietnamese. Genmoji and Image Playground provide users with even more ways to express themselves. In addition to turning a text description into a Genmoji, users can now mix together emoji and combine them with descriptions to create something new. When users make images inspired by family and friends using Genmoji and Image Playground, they have the ability to change expressions or adjust personal attributes, like hairstyle, to match their friend's latest look, said Apple. In Image Playground, users can tap into brand-new styles with ChatGPT, like an oil painting style or vector art. For moments when users have a specific idea in mind, they can tap Any Style and describe what they want. Image Playground sends a user's description or photo to ChatGPT and creates a unique image. Users are always in control, and nothing is shared with ChatGPT without their permission. Workout Buddy is a first-of-its-kind workout experience on Apple Watch with Apple Intelligence that incorporates a user's workout data and fitness history to generate personalised, motivational insights during their session.

If you want two cameras on your phone, you need to step up to the iPhone 16, but for many people, the 2-in-1 snapper here will suffice. There's the performance which is fast and mostly on a par with pricier iPhones in the range. Which is why it's compatible with Apple Intelligence, something which is only growing in its capabilities. The new AI feature is called Apple Intelligence. These include tools to rewrite emails or texts and something called Image Playground where you can create pictures from simple text inputs, for example, or even generate original emoji to use in text messages. These features need processing power and are made possible thanks to the latest iPhone processor, the A18. Apple has even included Visual Intellligence, which lets you point the camera at a restaurant, for instance, and it will tell you information such as opening hours or menus. On the iPhone 16, this is enabled through the Camera Control. Here, you can set it up as an option on the Action Button. And then there's the battery life, a factor whose importance is hard to overstate. It goes on and on, and the fact that it outdoes other iPhones in its size is a bonus. The new phone is priced at £599, meaning the price of entry to the Apple ecosystem is higher than it used to be. But there's a lot to like, and the new features and capabilities make the iPhone 16e good value.

Apple Intelligence announcements at WWDC: Everything Apple revealed for iOS, macOS and more
Apple Intelligence hasn't landed in the way Apple likely hoped it would, but that's not stopping the company from continuing to iterate on its suite of AI tools. During its WWDC 2025 conference on Monday, Apple announced a collection of new features for Apple Intelligence, starting with upgrades to Genmoji and Image Playground that will arrive alongside iOS 26 and the company's other updated operating systems. In Messages, you'll be able to use Image Playground to generate colorful backgrounds for your group chats. At the same time, Apple has added integration with ChatGPT to the tool, meaning it can produce images in entirely new styles. As before, if you decide to use ChatGPT directly through your iPhone in this way, your information will only be shared with OpenAI if you provide permission. Separately, Genmoji will allow users to combine two emoji from the Unicode library to create new characters. For example, you might merge the sloth and light bulb emoji if you want to poke fun at yourself for being slow to understand a joke. Across Messages, FaceTime and its Phone app, Apple is bringing live translation to the mix. In Messages, the company's on-device AI models will translate a message into your recipient's preferred language as you type. When they responded, each message will be instantly translated into your language. In FaceTime, you'll see live captions as the person you're chatting with speaks, and over a phone call, Apple Intelligence will generate a voiced translation. Visual Intelligence is also in line for an upgrade. Now in addition to working with your iPhone's camera, the tool can scan what's on your screen. Like Genmoji, Visual Intelligence will also benefit from deeper integration with ChatGPT, allowing you to ask the chat bot questions about what you see. Alternatively, you can search Google, Etsy and other supported apps to find images or products that might be a visual match. And if the tool detects when you're looking at an event, iOS 26 will suggest you add a reminder to your calendar. Nifty that. If you want to access Visual Intelligence, all you need to do is press the same buttons you would to take a screenshot on your iPhone. As expected, Apple is also making it possible for developers to use its on-device foundational model for their own apps. "With the Foundation Models framework, app developers will be able to build on Apple Intelligence to bring users new experiences that are intelligent, available when they're offline, and that protect their privacy, using AI inference that is free of cost," the company said in its press release. Apple suggests an educational app like Kahoot! might use its on-device model to generate personalized quizzes for users. According to the company, the framework supports Swift, Apple's own coding language, and the model is as easy as writing three lines of code. An upgraded Shortcuts app for both iOS and macOS is also on the way, with support for actions powered by Apple Intelligence. You'll be able to tap into either of the company's on-device or Private Cloud Compute model to generate responses that are part of whatever shortcut you want carried out. Apple suggests students might use this feature to create a shortcut that compares an audio transcript of a class lecture to notes they wrote on their own. Here again users can turn to ChatGPT if they want. There are many other smaller enhancements enabled by upgrades Apple has made to its AI suite. Most notably, Apple Wallet will automatically summarize tracking details merchants and delivery carriers send to you so you can find them in one place. A year since its debut at WWDC 2024, it's safe to say Apple Intelligence has failed to meet expectations. The smarter, more personal Siri that was the highlight of last year's presentation has yet to materialize. In fact, the company delayed the upgraded digital assistant in March, only saying at the time that it would arrive sometime in the coming year. Other parts of the suite may have shipped on time, but often didn't show the company's usual level of polish. For instance, notification summaries were quite buggy at launch, and Apple ended up reworking the messages to make it clearer they were generated by Apple Intelligence. With today's announcements, Apple still has a long way to go before it catches up to competitors like Google, but at least the company kept the focus on practical features. Image Playground on your iPhone is getting a major boost — thanks to ChatGPT
Last year, Apple unveiled Image Playground — a tool to turn your descriptions or people from your photo library into AI images. It was plagued with issues, complaints, and users feeling it was lagging behind the best AI image generators. But now Apple is bringing it back — with a little help. Whenever a user tries to generate an image through Image Playground like this, Apple will send the request off to ChatGPT to generate the image. However, Apple has made it clear that it won't share any personal information with ChatGPT without the user's permission. Apple is making a clear effort to push Image Playground further. Not only does it have integration with ChatGPT, but the feature is being made more accessible throughout iOS. Users can generate unique images that fit a conversation in Messages and set that as their background. It can also be accessed through Apple's Shortcuts update. Apple Intelligence may be lagging behind its competition, but the company's deepening relationship with OpenAI could help make up ground. Apple announced it was bringing ChatGPT to Siri last year and has continued to cram ChatGPT features into a various parts of its apps, like Notes and Mail. This is a direction other companies have used successfully, piggy-backing on the success of the largest AI models to boost an ecosystem without having to produce a competitive AI model — something both expensive and time-consuming. The feature isn't quite here yet. ChatGPT integration in Apple Playground will launch alongside iOS 26, which is expected to drop in September alongside the iPhone 17 family. Apple at WWDC 2025 announced the iOS 26 update with several new features revamped design, and upgraded Apple Intelligence features. While this year was not big on AI for Apple, it still provided some new, intuitive features to its existing AI features, like Visual Intelligence, Image Playground, and others. One of the new iOS 26 features which caught our eye was the integration of ChatGPT art styles to Image Playground. Just a few weeks back, OpenAI introduced several art styles, such as Ghibli, Pixar, cartoon, pixel, and others, to ChatGPT's image generation features. Now, iPhone users will be able to get access to these art styles on Image Playground in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe. This app for iPhone enables users to generate images in three different styles: Animation, Illustration, and the newly added Sketch. These art styles are similar to what ChatGPT 4o image creation features, including the popular anime style. Also, ChatGPT's image generation capabilities come under a paid subscription account; therefore, if you have the free-tier ChatGPT account, then you will have limitations on the number of images to generate.
