Asked to ‘trim' his beard, Kashmiri doctor loses seat at Coimbatore hospital

A Kashmiri doctor – Zubair Ahmed — has accused Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital located in Coimbatore of forcing him to 'quit his super speciality seat'. The doctor, who was allotted a seat at the nephrology department of the hospital after he cleared the NEET-SS was allegedly told by the hospital administration that he will have to either shave or trim his beard if he were to take admission. The doctor who had grown his beard for religious reasons refused the same, even as he agreed to abide by the hygiene requirements of the hospital including wearing a mask to 'hide his beard'. He decided to forgo the seat at the hospital, because the administration was refusing to budge. 'They clearly told him to shave or trim his beard or not take admission at all,' a source at the hospital told the Indian Express. When contacted the hospital administration clarified, 'We have not denied admission to anyone. We were allotted the candidate and we have to take admissions based on their rank given by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences'. The hospital administration asked Dr Ahmed to 'merely trim his beard', the hospital clarified. 'He was wearing a beard which reached his chest and we wanted him to trim it because in the nephrology department which he was planning to join he will be dealing with several patients whose immunity is low. Personal hygiene in such cases is absolutely important,' a spokesperson of the hospital told the Indian Express. According to sources at the hospital, Dr Ahmed had written to NBEMS 'accusing the hospital of discrimination'. NBEMS asked him to take admission by June 26. 'He had approached for admission on June 19, which was more or less the last day for admissions. His date of joining was extended to June 26, considering the special request he had made. But he did not turn up to take admission,' the hospital's spokesperson said. Doctors at the hospital said that the administration follows a strict attire policy and does not allow 'doctors with beards'. The spokesperson, however, said, 'We have a policy of grooming which is essential in all hospitals for the sake of hygiene. We only request our doctors to abide by these rules of personal hygiene'. The spokesperson clarified that there are senior doctors at the hospital who keep their beards. 'We allow groomed beards at the hospital. There are senior doctors who have been keeping trimmed beards for years at the hospital,' the spokesperson clarified. When contacted, Dr Zubair Ahmed was not available for comment. However, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, on Dr Ahmed's behalf. The letter read, 'Dr Zubair was left with no choice but to withdraw from the programme, despite having earned the seat through an all-India merit-based examination'.

CMO directs BMC to complete land acquisition for Phase 2 of coastal road within 15 days

The chief minister's office has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to complete the land acquisition for the Phase 2 of the Mumbai Coastal Road project within the next 15 days. For the said project, the BMC has to reclaim 165 hectares of land between Versova and Bhayander in the western suburbs and north Mumbai. In a review meeting held on Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also stressed that the project needs to be completed by 2028. Civic officials said that of the total land parcels that need to be acquired, 80% are government lands. 'Many of these lands belong to the fisheries department and revenue department. The proposal for transferring the lands have already been raised with the respective departments. On Friday's meeting it was decided that the ownership of these lands should be transferred to the BMC in the next 15 days for the coastal road project and we will be following up with respective departments,' an official told the Indian Express. 'The parcels mostly include mangrove patches and marshy lands. There will be no reclamation of the sea unlike the first phase of the project,' the official said. The civic officials maintained that the process of changing the reservation of these lands have already been initiated. In Mumbai, vacant land parcels are reserved under the BMC's Development Plan (2034) model. These reservations are made so that the land parcels are earmarked for utilising them for public amenities in the future. In case the said land parcel falls in the alignment of any infrastructure or government project, their reservations are being changed in order to assimilate them for the said project. As part of this project, nearly 60 plots between Goregaon and Dahisar will undergo change of reservation. It was also decided in the meeting that the periphery around the coastal road will be transformed into a modern commercial hub on the lines of the present day Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The CMO also stated that adequate compensatory plantation of the mangroves should also need to be carried out simultaneously as the construction of the project begins. 'We have acquired the coastal clearances and Union ministry's clearance for this project. After the forest permissions come through, we will approach the Bombay High Court seeking permission to cut mangroves,' the official said. The proposed second phase of the coastal road has been divided into six different packages. Package A will cover 4.5 km between Versova and Bangur Nagar (Goregaon), Package B will cover 1.66 km between Bangur Nagar and Mindspace (Malad). The packages C and D will include twin tunnels–3.9 km long–connecting Mindspace at Malad with Charkop in Kandivali. Package E will be 3.78 km, connecting Charkop with Gorai and the final Package F will be 3.69 km which will connect Gorai with Dahisar. From Dahisar, the civic authorities are constructing another 5.6 km elevated corridor that will extend till Bhayander at Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The overall project will be 25 km long and the total cost of these two projects have been pegged at Rs 20,000 crore. The BMC last year had secured environmental clearances for going ahead with the project and the on-groundwork started this year. The phase two of the coastal road will be a series of underground tunnels, cable-stayed bridge and vehicular interchanges that will improve north-south connectivity. The coastal road will also provide connectivity with the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR), an east-west connector that is also being constructed by the Mumbai civic body.

Sunil Gavaskar Irritated, Vents Out Frustration Due To Fake...

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has called out sports websites and individual accounts for attributing fake quotes against his name over the past few months. Gavaskar, who is currently in England as part of the broadcast team for India's ongoing Test series, took to social media and blasted the culprits responsible for the same. The 75-year-old also urged everyone to fact-check quotes before sharing them on any platform. "Over the last few months, it's come to my notice that a lot of sports websites and individual accounts have been attributing comments and quotes to me which I have never made. I request everybody to verify, fact-check and not to believe everything that they read. Particularly coming from some of these individual accounts and sports websites. God bless you all," Gavaskar said in a video posted on Instagram. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sunil Gavaskar (@gavaskarsunilofficial) Recently, Gavaskar urged the Indian team management to play star pacer Jasprit Bumrah in all five Tests against England. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload. "I think for us, managing his workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward, and we know what he brings to the table as well. So, before he came to the tour, it was already decided that he was going to play three Test matches. But let's see how his body turns out," Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference. According to a report in the Indian Express, Bumrah is likely to miss the 2nd Test against England, starting July 2 in Birmingham. Before the team's departure to England, Gambhir had confirmed that Bumrah will miss two of the five Tests due to a workload issue. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri warned the Indian camp to think twice before resting Bumrah in the second Test in Birmingham. "If he (Bumrah) was looking at a rest, you may have to think twice. If you don't have him and then go 2-0 down, it could be an uphill task," Shastri said on Sky Sports.

One Of The Greatest Bluffs Ever: Alastair Cook Drops A Bombshell Statement on Jasprit Bumrah Playing Three Test In This Series

Former England Captain Alastair Cook jokingly called out Team India's decision to publicly announce the number of Test matches their speedster Jasprit Bumrah would play in this series. The ongoing series is a five-match Test series with Ben-Stokes led team winning the Headingley test by five wickets. India's Chiefs Selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear even before the series started that Bumrah's workload management will be the key and the team will not risk their star bowler overusing him like Border Gavaskar Trophy. The Fact that India lost its first game with a Bumrah and the two out of four remaining tests will be without Bumrah is tailormade stuff for the hosts. Michael Vaughan on Stick To Cricket asked Why is India so vocal about Bumrah's status giving a full served platter of opportunities to England. Cook jokingly replied it could be a bluff. "Why are they announcing that their best bowler is only going to play 3 Tests?" Vaughan said "Unless it is one of the greatest bluffs ever. You would rather play Bumrah at Lord's wouldn't you?" Cook replied. Bumrah To Miss the Second Test According to a report by Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah will miss the second test due to workload management. Bumrah, India's most crucial asset in this series, bowled a mammoth 44 overs in the first Test at Headingley. Despite his valiant effort, the Indian bowling unit struggled as a whole, particularly with their line and consistency, eventually failing to defend a sizeable target of 371 on the final day. Gambhir Gambhir shared clarity on Bumrah's status during post-match press conference- "I think for us to manage Bumrah's workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward and we know what he brings to the table as well. So before he came on this tour, it was already decided that he's going to play three Test matches, but let's see how his body turns up. But we haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play". India squad for five-match Test series: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav

Gautam Gambhir in firing line for handling of Jasprit Bumrah for England Tests: 'Why was it not kept a secret?'

Before the Test series against England even began, it was known that pacer Jasprit Bumrah would be playing just three matches in the five-Test series due to his workload management. However, with the ace speedster performing exceptionally well in the first innings of the Headingley Test, where he took five wickets, there were calls for Bumrah to play all five Tests, which would give India the best chance of winning the series. However, after the loss in Leeds, India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed there would be no change in plans and the 31-year-old would indeed play just three Tests. India head coach Gautam Gambhir questioned over 'lack of secrecy' surrounding Jasprit Bumrah(HT_PRINT) Former India opening batter Aakash Chopra has now questioned the Indian head coach over the 'lack of secrecy' surrounding Bumrah, asking why there was a need to let the opposition know about their plans, as one could have kept Ben Stokes and co guessing about the pacer's availability. Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers in the first innings of the Headingley Test as he returned with five wickets, helping the visitors gain a six-run lead. However, he went wicketless in the second innings, and this was the main reason behind India letting England chase down 371 to gain a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. 'Bumrah said he will play three matches only, and I am thinking whether it was required to publicise it. Why was it not kept a secret? We don't announce our team as well. So why was it necessary to reiterate it repeatedly before the start of the tour that he would play three matches only? Let them guess. You play whichever Tests you wish,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel. Also Read: Jasprit Bumrah set to skip 2nd Test despite week-long gap 'You have played one, and you know you can play only two of the remaining four matches, which is not a good thing. If you play the second as well, you will play one of three. So, suddenly, the opposition gets into a great frame of mind that Bumrah, your biggest strength, is also not there. You can prepare pitches accordingly,' he added. Bumrah might miss the second Test at Edgbaston According to a report in the Indian Express, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the second Test against England in Edgbaston as the team management looks to manage his workload. The pacer is expected to be back in action for the third Test at the Lord's Cricket Ground. However, if Bumrah indeed misses the second Test, the visitors risk going 0-2 down, as Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna's performance left much to be desired in Headingley. Chopra reckons there is a dire need to create a crop of fast bowlers as uncertainty looms large over both Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. "The next generation of Indian fast bowlers will have to be prepared. It's a serious issue. There were two important pillars of India's good performance away from home. One was batters starting to score runs, but it doesn't work out with that, as you need to pick up 20 wickets. So Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj were outstanding with Jasprit Bumrah," said Chopra. 'I also remember Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Lord's Test. When there are doubts about Bumrah's availability, who will take the responsibility going forward, because Mohammad Shami, I think that story is not over, but it is close to an ending. Mohammed Siraj is good, but he hasn't reached the rank of Bumrah or Shami,' he added.
