Original Birkin bag sells at auction for record €8.6m
Regular Birkin bags sell for more than $10,000 (R177,000). The first, which has Birkin's JB initials on the flap and, unlike its descendants, has a strap that cannot be removed, was bought by a private Japanese buyer over the phone, Sotheby's said. The price was the highest on record for a fashion item, it said. 'It was a travel bag. Clearly it was worn for nine years by Jane Birkin on a daily basis and the form is very beautiful,' Aurelie Vassy, head of the handbags and fashion department at Sotheby's Europe and Middle East, told Reuters. Birkin auctioned the bag in 1994 to support Sidaction, a French charity that fights HIV/Aids. In 2000, when it went on sale again, a private French collector bought it. When British-born Birkin died in 2023, the French capital's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, said the 'most Parisian of the English has left us'. Birkin had lived in her adopted France since the late 1960s and was remembered as much for her warmth and campaigning as for her acting and singing, most famously on the hit single Je t' non plus . JB Financial marks W4.8b social return in ESG report
JB Financial Group released its 2024 annual report Thursday, showing achievements in clean energy financing, climate risk management and community investment totaling nearly 4.8 billion won ($3.5 million) in social impact. As part of its push for sustainability, JB's two regional banking units, Jeonbuk Bank and Kwangju Bank, became the first in the country to sign direct renewable energy power purchase agreements. They also rolled out new green loan products designed to support companies committed to the RE100 initiative, a global campaign that urges firms to source 100 percent of their electricity from renewables. The report comprises the group's non-financial performance across four priority areas: climate action, community engagement, consumer protection and risk management. It includes third-party verified data aligned with global standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the International Financial Reporting Standards. In the social sector, JB said it expanded local community programs, with the social return on investment of its core 2024 projects measured at 1.8 times, or some 4.77 billion won in impact. The group received an A rating from the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability in 2024 and was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Korea Index, reflecting growing recognition of its ESG leadership. 'JB Financial will continue driving social change through finance while staying true to our identity as Korea's top small but strong financial group,' a company official said.

Helen Skelton to present new adventure programme on 5
The coastal adventure kicks off along three very different, dramatic coastlines, as Helen, JB Gill and Jules Hudson explore glorious landscapes, underground wonders and meet the fascinating people who know all the secrets. In North Yorkshire, Helen descends 4,500 feet into the UK's deepest mine - an extraordinary undersea world and the only place on Earth where Polyhalite is extracted. "According to the TV guide, the preview reads: "She gets a real taste of mining life: a creaky lift ride, 35-degree heat, and the rumble of a multi-tonne mining machine. "Back on the surface, she swaps drills for thrills, meeting a Redcar land sailing legend and joining the wind-powered action on the beach. There's even time for a Teesside classic - the Parmo. Chicken, béchamel and cheese? Yes please! "Down on the Kent coast, JB explores the strange beauty of Dungeness - a vast shingle headland and a haven for unlikely wildlife. From laughing frogs to leeches he discovers just how wild Britain's only desert can get. Recommended reading: "At Broadstairs beach, he meets heroic rescue dogs whose super-snouts are saving lives along the shore. "Meanwhile, Jules is in Devon, setting sail from Salcombe aboard the iconic Yawl - the pride of the south coast. Then it's into the depths of Beer Quarry Caves, a sprawling labyrinth hand-carved over 2,000 years. "Among the Roman coins and medieval carvings, he stumbles across something unexpected: a local male voice choir, drawn here not just for the history, but for the incredible acoustics – the best in the country! "And while they may be hundreds of miles apart, the banter's never far away as Helen, JB and Jules share all their adventures with each other."
