Time to go back to the drawing board on early childhood education

What type of society is this? What have our priorities been for the past 30 years, especially in the education sector? Where have we been? Social scientists and educational psychologists opine that the human brain is the last organ to develop to its fullest potential. Research indicates that it takes 20 years for the brain to get to the point where it is fully developed, meaning that the work that is done to develop the child from adolescence to early adulthood is of vital importance to engender a culture of meaning, purpose and ultimately a drive to succeed. If you miss it then, forget about the potential you will derive from the adult who has been neglected from the early years. Is it surprising that we have the challenges that we face in SA? Rising crime rates, homelessness, unemployment and general helplessness have come to define the experiences of many in our society. The question we ought to ask is what is being done to instill the right focus on early education to ensure we have better results in the future. This is not only about demonstrating how we benchmark ourselves against other nations on literacy and education. It's also about fulfilling an agenda set by the June 16 generation to create a country and a people that will hold their heads high and take their rightful place among the community of nations. A key challenge that most researchers point to is the absence of cognitive attention among our children at the age they are when they take these tests. This refers to the slow cognitive development experienced by a majority of our children in that age group. Studies such as the University of Pretoria's point to a lack of teaching skills among educators who teach at those levels, the absence of parental involvement in the education of their children and other socioeconomic challenges as the major causes of these challenges. My own assessment is that we generally don't have a vision as a country when it comes to defining the society that we want. SA's budget for basic education far exceeds that of many developing nations that face similar challenges. The results, however, are far short of those achieved in some of those countries.

How young South Africans are redefining the hospitality industry?

As Youth Day approaches on 16 June, the contribution of young people to South Africa's hospitality industry is drawing renewed attention, particularly as the sector undergoes rapid technological and cultural shifts. Adapting to a digital, fast-changing industry The hospitality sector, long a key employer and contributor to global economies, is navigating evolving service standards and digital innovations. In this changing environment, the role of youth has proven essential. Renee Hill, CEO of the IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management (IIEHSM), notes: 'Young people, with their fresh energy, creativity and tech-savvy outlook, are driving innovation and ensuring the sector remains agile and relevant in a fast-changing world.' Technological adoption has accelerated across hotels, restaurants, and tourism operations — from AI-powered services to mobile room keys and virtual concierge systems. Younger professionals, raised in a digital-first environment, are naturally positioned to integrate these tools into daily operations, improving both guest experiences and business efficiency. Fresh perspectives on guest engagement and marketing Beyond technical skills, the younger generation's creative input is helping reshape how hospitality businesses market themselves and connect with guests. From curating immersive online experiences to leading influencer partnerships, youth are behind much of the industry's recent marketing innovation. 'The use of social media influencers, immersive virtual reality tours and sustainability-driven brand narratives are often pioneered by young minds who understand contemporary consumer behaviour, and their innovative ideas not only differentiate brands in a competitive market but also attract a younger customer base seeking unique and personalised experiences,' Hill adds. Embedding inclusivity, sustainability and social impact Another defining feature of the emerging generation is a values-driven approach to business. Younger workers are advocating for workplace diversity, ethical business practices and sustainability initiatives. These priorities are influencing how hospitality brands position themselves and engage with their communities. Their openness to working flexible hours, taking on cross-cultural roles and embracing international exposure also positions youth as adaptable assets in a sector reliant on interpersonal connection and customer service. The need for long-term investment in youth talent As the industry looks to recover from the disruptions of recent years, Hill stresses the importance of sustained investment in young talent. 'The role of youth in the hospitality industry is both impactful and indispensable. By bringing energy, innovation and a deep understanding of technology, young professionals are not only enhancing guest experiences but also steering the industry toward a more sustainable and inclusive future. "Investing in youth through training, mentorship, and leadership opportunities will ensure the continued growth and relevance of hospitality in an increasingly interconnected world,' she says.

F1 Veteran's Bold ‘F1' Movie Premiere Look Sends Fans Into a Frenzy, for Better or Worse

F1 Veteran's Bold 'F1' Movie Premiere Look Sends Fans Into a Frenzy, for Better or Worse originally appeared on Parade. Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber driver Nico Hülkenberg is more than just an athlete. He might just be a fashion icon! Taking a major fashion risk that left Formula One fans divided, Hülkenberg stepped out in his Monday best at the F1 movie premiere in New York City tonight (June 16). Directed by Joseph Kosinski with a screenplay written by Ehren Kruger, Brad Pitt — as well as Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia and Javier Bardem — star in F1, an upcoming film centered around the life of Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a fictional F1 driver who raced in the 1990s and was forced to retire after a terrible accident. In the film, Hayes will come out of retirement to drive alongside rookie Joshua 'Noah' Pearce (Idris), making for a movie that is sure to be emotional and action-packed, perfect for Formula One fans all across the globe. Real-life F1 drivers will have special appearances throughout the film as well, which is likely the reason Hülkenberg — as well as the rest of the 2025 Formula One grid — is in attendance tonight. Nevertheless, posing alongside his wife, Eglė Ruškytė-Hülkenberg, Hülkenberg was the first driver to step onto the red carpet — or should we say gray carpet? — at the F1 movie premiere. The F1 driver rocked a gold-and-white jacket with a black lapel, tying the look together with black dress pants and black loafers. While the jacket featured thin diagonal stripes, he donned an almost-unbuttoned silver shirt underneath that featured thick vertical stripes, making a bold fashion statement as he chose to play with both patterns and colors. At his side, Ruškytė-Hülkenberg stepped out in a plunging black jumpsuit with a gold belt — as well as a silver-and-black clutch — tying in the colors of her counterpart's red carpet look. The star of the show was her cardigan, though, and given the fact that she runs her own crochet business, Egle, it is safe to assume that she made it herself. How cool is that? Hülkenberg even posed for a photo with his teammate, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, and the Kick Sauber team principal, Jonathan Wheatley, ultimately warming the hearts of Formula One fans everywhere. Nevertheless, his look was rather polarizing, with users via X either loving or hating his bold ensemble. "Great jacket Nico!" one user wrote, while another added "Nico's tux 🔥" ultimately praising the German driver. "1 button, ok. 2 buttons, fine. But three buttons? Too far" and "Having money does not equal having a good taste or class," other users wrote, critiquing the look altogether. Yikes! Let us know whether or not you think Hülkenberg nailed it, and be sure to check out F1 when it hits theaters on June 27.
