KFC's new Japanese-Style Summer Burgers source refreshing ingredients from Setouchi and Wakayama
By Casey Baseel, SoraNews24 Japan's summer is feeling a little lacking in its Japanese-ness in some ways this year, but it's set to get a little boost in that regard from the unexpected source of KFC. The Kentucky-born, big-in-Japan chain has released a pair of new Japanese-Style Summer Burgers, or, if you're really getting into the Japanese-style spirit, the Natsu no Wafu Burgers. First up is the brand-new Negishio Lemon Chicken Filet Burger. The 'chicken fillet' part is something you can probably already envision, but negishio refers to a kind of traditional Japanese sauce/dressing made from diced green onion (negi), salt (shio), and sesame oil. The lemon sauce here has a Japanese aspect to it too, as KFC sources the fruit it uses from West Japan's inland sea-adjacent Setouchi region, which produces some of the finest citrus fruit in the country. The other Japanese-Style Summer Burger, the Chicken Nanban Fillet Burger, is making a return to KFC's menu after its debut last summer. Chicken nanban is a dish that originated on Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu, taking inspiration from the cooking styles brought over by Portuguese traders during Japan's feudal era. The key ingredient is a creamy tartar sauce-like condiment with sour accents from vinegar and, in the case of KFC's Chicken Nanban Fillet Burger, a citrus infusion. Even the sides and drinks are getting a shot of Japanese citrus flavor, with a new Salty Setouchi Lemon powder to shake onto KFC's French fries… …and a natsumikan mandarin orange lemonade soda that gets its oranges from Wakayama Prefecture, among Japan's best mandarin growers. The Japanese-Style Summer Burgers are priced at 540 yen each, the fries with Setouchi lemon powder at 320 yen, and the Wakayama mikan soda at 300 yen. They are available for a limited time. Ghaziabad vigilantes pressure KFC, Nazeer to halt non-veg food in Vasundhara during Kanwar Yatra
Two restaurants in Ghaziabad's Vasundhara locality — including a KFC outlet — came under pressure from a self-styled vigilante group on Thursday for serving non-vegetarian food during the Kanwar Yatra , reported TOI. The group, led by a man with a long criminal record, demanded that the outlets switch to vegetarian-only menus, despite not being located on the designated Kanwar route and not falling under the government's official meat-sale restrictions. According to eyewitnesses, the group harassed staff and customers, demanding that no non-vegetarian items be served during the religious yatra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Is Why Smart People Put Baking Soda in Their Shampoo Read More Undo According to the report, under pressure, the KFC outlet complied and displayed a notice that read 'we are serving only veg.' Nikita Rana, manager of the KFC branch, said the outlet closed for several hours and resumed operations later in the day with a vegetarian-only menu . 'It impacted business significantly. KFC is known for chicken, and more than 70% of our footfall dropped,' she said. Live Events At the Nazeer outlet nearby, manager Mahesh Kumar Bagel said a crowd gathered outside the restaurant, questioning staff over their menu. 'We explained we were not violating any rules, but they wouldn't listen. We had to shut down for over five hours,' he said, adding that no formal complaint was filed since there was no physical harm, though they would consider it if harassment continued. No Official Restriction, Yet Business Disrupted As per government directives, only shops selling raw meat directly along the Kanwar route are required to close during the Yatra. Both KFC and Nazeer are located away from the official route and are not subject to these restrictions. Despite this, Bhupendra Tomar — also known as Pinky Choudhary — who leads the group, claimed they would continue to enforce a vegetarian-only rule during the Yatra, offering restaurants a 'choice' to remain open if they complied, TOI further reported. Tomar, 49, is no stranger to controversy. He has at least 25 cases registered against him across Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and Delhi. From vandalising AAP's office in 2014 to being arrested for communal sloganeering at Jantar Mantar in 2021, Tomar has been repeatedly associated with acts of intimidation and public disorder. Most recently, in April, members of his outfit defaced a portrait at Ghaziabad railway station, mistaking Bahadur Shah Zafar for Aurangzeb. Police Respond, FIR Registered Though neither restaurant filed a complaint, police took suo motu cognisance of the incident. An FIR was registered at Indirapuram police station under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for disobedience of public orders. DCP Nimish Patil confirmed that police teams have been formed to identify and arrest those involved. 'We responded immediately on Thursday. Traffic was disrupted in the area as well. KFC has resumed regular service, and we've assured them of police support if needed,' Patil said. Customers who turned up on Friday expecting to order from the usual menu expressed frustration. 'No one should dictate what we eat,' said Soumya Banerjee, a disappointed customer. 'I respect religious sentiments, but no one has the right to interfere in personal choices,' added Kunal Verma, a Vasundhara resident. Meanwhile, TOI sources in Ghaziabad police confirmed that while proceedings under the Goondas Act had previously been initiated against Tomar, the process was not completed due to protests by his supporters. Police Commissioner J Ravinder Goud said action against Tomar will be reviewed based on his past record.

KFC's joke on Coldplay's ‘kiss cam' scandal backfires, netizens grill them over food quality: ‘Remind me about Denmark'
Popular fast-food giant KFC tried to join the conversation around Coldplay's 'kiss cam' controversy with a cheeky HR joke, but the move backfired quickly as netizens turned the spotlight on its food quality. Ever since a video of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR head Kristin Cabot cuddling on camera went viral, brands and influencers have been quick to spin jokes around it, each adding their own brand-specific twist to the controversy. In a cheeky joke referring to the incident, KFC said, 'Just know our sides are always HR approved.' Within seconds of the tweet, social media users gathered to remind KFC of its 'disgusting' food quality and 'dirty' outlets. 'That's funny, KFC, but it also reminds me of the time I had your coleslaw and had explosive diarrhoea for the next 3 days. It got to the point where my parents even had to replace the toilet,' a user highlighted. Another user said, 'Your chicken gave me diarrhoea.' 'Fix your store! They're dirty!!' added a user. 'Your mashed potatoes are 50% plastic,' exclaimed a user. A user asked Grok, 'Has KFC improved the quality of their food, or is it still basically dog kibble?' 'What a coincidence because the sides usually end up getting taken to a place like KFC,' quipped a user. 'What about the chicken, though? Who's approving that?' a user said, suggesting that the quality of the chicken the food chain uses is bad. 'Remind me again why KFC closed down in Denmark?' a netizen asked, referring to the temporary closure of all 11 Danish restaurants in June 2025 due to food safety violations, including falsifying chicken expiration dates, improper thawing, and hygiene issues like mould and dirt. Another user shared KFC Trinidad and Tobago's 2020 Emancipation Day post, which features an image of a chicken drumstick casting a raised fist shadow, and asked, 'Was this HR approved?' The post was heavily criticised for racial insensitivity despite no direct Black History Month connection. A Jumbotron camera at a Coldplay concert in Boston, Massachusetts, captured the CEO, Andy Byron, with his arms around the company's head of HR, Kristin Cabot. Both Byron and Cabot are married. They went viral for trying to dodge the 'kiss cam,' which prompted Coldplay singer Chris Martin to joke, 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.'

Understanding neighbors a key to coexistence with foreigners, says Kobe NPO chair
KOBE -- "I believe we need to understand our neighbors who live in the same society as us," said Kim Songil, chairperson of the nonprofit Kobe Foreigners Friendship Center (KFC), with conviction. The 62-year-old is a third-generation South Korean resident of Japan who was born and raised in Kobe's Nagata Ward. In addition to long-term Korean residents, foreigners in Hyogo Prefecture include refugees and their families who fled from Vietnam and other countries after the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. "There's no system in schools to teach children with foreign roots how they came to live in Japan. This means that many of the Japanese kids sitting next to them also don't know either," Kim pointed out. The KFC supports people with foreign backgrounds by providing consultations about daily life and welfare, and by teaching children Japanese and other subjects. Such children with foreign roots did not choose to live in Japan themselves. Kim, however, believes that their fresh perspectives might bring innovation to Japanese society. His wish is to give them hope for the future. To make that possible, he says it is essential that policies involving foreigners are based on evidence. "There's no proof that an increase in foreigners leads to more crime," he emphasized. Criminal offenses by foreigners drop below 40% of peak According to the Ministry of Justice's 2024 White Paper on Crime, the number of criminal offenses committed by foreigners peaked in 2005 at 43,622 cases. That figure has been trending downward, and stood at 15,541 in 2023, which is an increase from 2022 but also fewer than 40% of the peak figure. Meanwhile, the number of newly arriving foreign visitors grew from 6.12 million people in 2005 to 23.75 million in 2023. The number of foreign residents also rose from 2.03 million people in 2012, when records began to be taken, to 3.41 million in 2023. As a way to start thinking about how to coexist with people who have foreign roots, Kim shared a story he heard from a Vietnamese woman. She had apparently been living in a housing complex in Kanagawa Prefecture. At that apartment, signs on trash disposal rules and restrictions on parking and noise were translated into multiple languages. But signs for local festivals were only in Japanese, leaving the woman feeling left out. Kim emphasized, "Children see this kind of thing constantly as they grow up. But is there any real evidence that foreigners don't follow the rules? Empathy for others is needed regarding policies." (Japanese original by Yuna Maeda, Kobe Bureau)
