Manipur: 5 militants killed in factional clash between Chin-Kuki rebel outfits

IMPHAL: At least five militants were killed in a fierce factional gunfight between two newly formed Chin-Kuki rebel outfits in the dense forests of Deiveijang village near Longpi, under Nungba Police Station in Manipur's Noney district on Tuesday morning, officials confirmed. Officials believe the gunfight was the result of rising tensions and competition between the two factions over territorial and organisational control. (Representational image) A police official said the incident site lies approximately 50 kilometres south of Nungba Police Station and is located deep inside the jungle. 'It is not a motorable road and even there is no mobile signal in the place. We also have no adequate details, but a team has been deployed to the spot,' the official told HT. People familiar with the matter said the clash occurred between cadres of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) and the Chin Kuki Mizo Army (CKMA), both of which are not signatories to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Government of India. The deceased militants have been identified by the people familiar with the matter as Alex, Seiboi, Pongba, Ringo, and Rambo, though authorities have yet to confirm which group the deceased belonged to. A person aware of the matter said, 'Both UKNA and CKMA are recently formed groups and are mainly composed of armed elements from the Chin-Kuki community. Their operations are spread across the hill districts of Manipur and extend to parts of the Indo-Myanmar border.' Officials believe the gunfight was the result of rising tensions and competition between the two factions over territorial and organisational control. 'There has been a consistent tussle for dominance between these non-SoO groups. The situation has worsened ever since UKNA was allegedly involved in the assassination of the deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuki National Army (KNA) on June 30,' an officer said on condition of anonymity. The slain KNA leader, a member of a group that is a signatory to the SoO pact, was reportedly gunned down by UKNA cadres, sparking unrest and intensifying rifts within the broader Chin-Kuki militant landscape. Security agencies have since stepped up surveillance and movement tracking in and around the incident area, but no formal statement has yet been issued by either the Manipur Police or central paramilitary forces regarding the deaths or any ongoing counter-operations. As of Tuesday evening, the situation in Deiveijang village and surrounding forested areas remained tense.

KNA 2025: Katanning 14-and-under team bring home silver at Great Southern Regional Championships in Albany

Katanning Netball Association performed well in the 2025 Great Southern Regional Championships in Albany at the weekend, with one of its teams finishing runners-up and the other also reaching the finals. Teams from all over the Great Southern come together to participate in this event, including teams from Albany, Katanning, Kojonjup, Narrogin, Denmark, Esperance and Ongerup. KNA took a 14-and-under team and a 20-and-under team to compete this year. The regional championships are a key part of the Netball WA pathway, and they offer major opportunities for regional players to develop and progress further in their netball journey. It also acts as a great opportunity for umpires and coaches to be recognised by Netball WA for development and accreditation. Both Katanning teams had a great weekend, and gave their absolute best across the whole weekend to make it worth the travel and the cold weather. Games started on Friday night for the 20-and-under team, and the 14-and-under team crammed all their games in over the following two days. The 14-and-under team had some great wins against some tough competitors, dominating the ladder in their pool and remaining undefeated in all rounds. It was the grand final that was a test for the them, however, up against top team Esperance. The team showed pure grit all the way. Esperance slipped ahead by half-time, but the Katanning girls kept pushing in the second half. They put up a competitive fight and brought home silver to finish their championships weekend as runners-up in their age category. The 20-and-under team is a new team put together for KNA this year, formed from various clubs throughout the association. It was terrific to see the young women come together and form as one to represent Katanning. This team had a few great wins, taking on everything that was thrown at them, mixing up their combos and still coming together as one each game. This team also made the finals rounds, but were knocked out by a mighty Esperance side in a close and hard-fought game. With the weekend over and everyone well-rested after a fortnight's holiday, it's back to round 13 at the Katanning Leisure Centre on Saturday, July 26.

KNA 2025: Association's youngest netballers leave the court as Net Set Go winds up for 2025 season

The Katanning Netball Association's Net Set season has concluded for 2025, with their last day being held last Monday afternoon for all teams. After a brilliantly run last session, the association's youngest players had their wind-up, with some amazing delicious treats to indulge in and certificates for all the outstanding little net-setters for completing a whole season in 2025. KNA Net Set co-ordinator Tania Edwards has again done an amazing job at creating a season to remember for the kids. She is on-point with really getting the kids into zones they enjoy, trying new things and embracing the fun and learning at the same time. The drills were run in the final session in fun game fashion, developing skills along the way. There wer plenty of proud parents, coaches and helpers — the team of people to get every Monday and Saturday happening. Saturdays were always the best part of the week for the Net Set kids, as they got to play a mini-game against each other in proper uniforms. With the junior kids also playing at the same time on surrounding courts, it gave Net Set a real feel for what a game day is like. Watching the little future netballers on court is amazing to see. All other divisions are on a two-week break for the July school holidays.

Manipur: Gunfight erupts in same area where 4 killed in ambush on Monday

IMPHAL: A gunfight broke out between two armed groups around 3 am on Tuesday in the same area in Manipur's Churachandpur district where an ambush took place on Monday, killing four individuals, officials said. Monday's ambush in Manipur's Churachandpur district was allegedly carried out by the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) against the Kuki National Army (KNA). The Churachandpur district police said that no fresh casualties have been reported in Tuesday's gunfight, and the identities of the armed groups involved in it remain unverified. According to officials familiar with the matter, the shootout occurred near K. Mongjang, the same area where Monday's ambush, allegedly carried out by the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) against the Kuki National Army (KNA), had taken place. Those killed in Monday's ambush were identified as Phalhing (72), a woman from Koite village who was caught in the crossfire; Thenkhothang alias Thahpi (48) of Matejang; Seikhogin (35) of Teiseng; and Lengouhao (35) of Chengkon. Among them, Thahpi, also known as Thangboi Haokip, was allegedly the deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuki National Organisation/Kuki National Army (KNO/KNA), a prominent Kuki militant outfit. A first information report (FIR) was registered at the Churachandpur police station after the incident and a search operation was launched. However, no arrests have been made so far, according to police. Meanwhile, a video clip circulating on social media shows a group of youngsters cleaning a Hyundai Creta (bearing registration number MN01AG 9187) — the vehicle ambushed in Monday's attack — at a local car wash. Police later confirmed that volunteers of a youth organisation, Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL), undertook the task of washing human remains from the vehicle with police consent. The car is currently in police custody. Police further confirmed that the bodies of the deceased are still at the Churachandpur district hospital morgue, and no fresh violence related to the incident has been reported. In a related development, a Facebook user named Hefa Ph claimed the registration number MN01AG 9187 belongs to his family's vehicle and had been misused by the attackers. In a video statement, Hefa clarified that the vehicle is registered under his father's name, Md Ramijuddin, and has been undergoing repairs at an automobile workshop since September 11 last year. 'I urge the authorities concerned to investigate how the registration number was duplicated and used by miscreants in Churachandpur,' he said.
