Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner dies in paragliding crash
ROME - Austrian extreme sportsman Felix Baumgartner died on Thursday while paragliding in Italy, the Austrian Foreign Ministry and Italian fire brigade confirmed to dpa, citing Italian authorities. The 56-year-old, who made international headlines in 2012 for his historic skydive from the edge of space, crashed in the seaside resort of Porto Sant'Elpidio on the Adriatic coast, they said. The fire brigade said Baumgartner crashed into the swimming pool of a municipal accommodation block at around 4 pm (1400 GMT) and died instantly. It is suspected that he fainted and lost control of his motorized paraglider. The extreme sportman fell on a hotel employee, who was taken to hospital with injuries, the fire brigade added. The Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport said the employee did not sustain serious injuries. According to Italian media, several guests were in the hotel pool at the time, but were not injured in the accident. Baumgartner became world famous in 2012 when he became the first person to reach the speed of sound in free fall during a jump from the stratosphere. Millions of people watched live on television and online as he plunged into the depths, reaching a top speed of more than 1,300 kilometers per hour and setting the record for the highest manned balloon flight and the highest parachute jump. Baumgartner was reportedly on holiday in Italy with his wife at the time of his death. _____ Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Portions copyrighted by the respective providers.

Max Verstappen's Red Bull switch approved by Toto Wolff's boss as Mercedes make power play
Mercedes have been heavily linked with a move for Max Verstappen, who could find a way out of his Red Bull contract, with Toto Wolff's superior green lighting the move Ola Kallenius, the Mercedes chief executive and Toto Wolff's boss, has reportedly approved the team's move for Red Bull driver Max Verstappen from 2026. Despite being officially under contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season, Verstappen has been heavily linked with a move to Mercedes during recent weeks. Christian Horner, the now-former Red Bull team principal, confirmed to the media last year that Verstappen's deal did contain a 'performance element' that could allow him to leave the team prematurely - and their struggles this season could see that become a reality. Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport has claimed that Kallenius has now given his sign off to the arrival of Verstappen, which frees Wolff up to go and pursue the Red Bull driver, who has cut a frustrated figure given the team's massive drop off in form this year. It is understood that Verstappen will be free to trigger an exit clause if he is lower than fourth in the Drivers' standings after the Hungarian Grand Prix at the start of August, which is the last race before F1's summer break. Currently the Dutchman sits third in the championship with an 18 point lead over fourth place man George Russell, who could yet lose out if Verstappen did join the Silver Arrows. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc sits a further 28 points back in fifth. Russell, who won in Canada last month, is looking to land himself a new deal with Mercedes as his contract runs out next year. He is aware that talks with Verstappen are taking place, but believes he is performing well enough to merit his spot. "It's only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing," he told Sky Sports. "But from my side, if I'm performing as I'm doing, what have I got to be concerned about? There are two seats in every Formula 1 team." It means young star Andrea Kimi Antonelli could be the man to lose out despite signing a multi-year deal with the team which began this year. Wolff insists they are trying to keep their drivers in the loop amid their chase of Verstappen. 'What we are trying to do in the team is be transparent,' he said. 'You can choose to hold things under wraps, or do what we've done in the last 20 years I've been here is putting it out there and saying this is the situation. These drivers are clever people and they talk to each other. 'I'm saying it how it is and there's no such thing as saying we are going to sign Max, because it's so far away that it's not realistic at that stage. So with George, we talk about everything.'

‘Look at me, you PIG' snaps controversial tennis star Fabio Fognini during tense handshake after defeat to Corentin Moutet at Stuttgart Open
He might be on his last leg of his tennis career, but the passions haven't certainly dimmed for the 38-year old Italian player Fabio Fognini. At the Stuttgart Open, Fognini, the former world no. 9 playing on a wildcard entry for the event, called his rival Corentin Moutet a 'pig'. The incident came at the end of the first-round game, where emotions bubbled up. At one point Fognini snapped his racquet over his knee and threw it away. Moutet won the match 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, hit a ball into the stands to celebrate and walked over for the customary handshake. Even as Fognini kept saying something to him, Moutet didn't respond verbally, just patted his opponent on the back after the handshake, and moved away from him to shake the referee's hand. Fognini hadn't stopped talking. Spicy handshake 🌶️@moutet99 wins the battle of the entertainers 6-4 6-7 6-3 vs Fognini 🍿#BOSSOPEN — Tennis TV (@TennisTV) June 10, 2025 Angered by something, Fognini reportedly snapped in French: 'Regarde-moi, petit cochon!' – or 'Look at me, you little pig!' He then allegedly added in Italian, 'You're a piece of s***!' The fracas has been reported by the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, and others. Fognini is no stranger to on-court controversy. In the Tokyo Olympics he apologized for yelling at himself with an anti-gay slur during a loss. ''Obviously I didn't want to offend anyone's feelings,' Fognini added. 'I love the LGBT community and I apologise for the nonsense that I let out,' he had written on an Instagram post with a rainbow background. In the US Open in 2017, he was ejected out of the doubles tournament for vulgarly insulting the chair umpire during his first-round loss in singles. He was then handed a suspended ban of two Grand Slam tournaments. Louise Engzelle, the Swedish umpire, had reported Fognini after he called her, in Italian, very abusive words, that can't be reported here even with the usage of asterisks.
