Microsoft in advanced talks for continued access to OpenAI tech, Bloomberg News reports

FILE PHOTO: A man looks at his phone in front of the Microsoft logo during the 2025 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, March 3, 2025. REUTERS/Albert Gea/File Photo (Reuters) -Microsoft is in advanced talks for a deal that would give the Windows maker continued access to critical OpenAI technology in the future, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing two people familiar with the negotiations. The companies have discussed new terms that would allow Microsoft to use OpenAI's latest models and technology even if the ChatGPT maker declares it has achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI), or AI that surpasses human intelligence, the report said. A clause in OpenAI's current contract with Microsoft will shut the software giant out of some rights to the startup's advanced technology when it achieves AGI. Negotiators have been meeting regularly, and an agreement could come together in a matter of weeks, Bloomberg News reported. Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. OpenAI needs Microsoft's approval to complete its transition into a public-benefit corporation. The two have been in negotiations for months to revise the terms of their investment, including the future equity stake Microsoft will hold in OpenAI. Last month, The Information reported that Microsoft and OpenAI were at odds over the AGI clause. OpenAI is also facing a lawsuit from Elon Musk, who co-founded the company with Sam Altman in 2015 but left before it surged in popularity, accusing OpenAI of straying from its founding mission — to develop AI for the good of humanity, not corporate profit. Microsoft is set to report June quarter earnings on Wednesday, with its relationship with OpenAI in the spotlight, as the startup turns to rivals Google, Oracle and CoreWeave for cloud capacity. Oppo's AI Vision: Smartphones as Empathetic Partners, Not Replacements

Oppo is redefining the future of smartphones by positioning artificial intelligence (AI) as a collaborative tool that amplifies human potential, not one that competes with it. The company is actively investing in AI to transform the smartphone into an intelligent, empathetic assistant that complements daily life through intuitive, useful features. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, Oppo introduced its enhanced AI strategy, with an ambitious goal to bring generative AI to 100 million users globally by the end of 2025. Peter Dohyung Lee, Head of Product Strategy at Oppo, emphasized India's importance in this vision. 'India is central to our goal of bringing GenAI to 100 million global users by 2025,' Lee told India Today Tech, highlighting the country's rapid AI adoption and tech-savvy consumer base. Since 2020, Oppo has been building its own large language models (LLMs), becoming the first smartphone brand to deploy a 7-billion-parameter LLM directly on a device. These efforts have led to the rollout of over 100 generative AI features across Oppo smartphones in 2024 alone. AI is deeply woven into Oppo's internal and product ecosystem. From features like HyperTone Image Engine for improved photography to intelligent battery optimization via SuperVOOC charging, AI enables a smarter, more personalized user experience. Internally, the company uses AI to enhance R&D, automate testing, and streamline development. 'Our goal is simple – AI for all,' said Lee. Oppo is democratizing AI by embedding it across all product tiers, not just premium devices. The recently launched Reno 14 series is a testament to this, integrating advanced tools such as AI Eraser 2.0, AI Best Face, and productivity boosters like AI Voice Scribe and AI Translate. Strategic collaborations with global tech leaders such as Google, Microsoft, MediaTek, and Qualcomm are helping Oppo push the boundaries of mobile AI. For instance, Google's Gemini is now integrated into Oppo's ecosystem, enabling users to perform complex tasks using natural language across apps. Microsoft's Azure AI brings improved transcription services and will soon allow PC users to control connected Oppo smartphones using Copilot. Oppo also stresses data privacy, investing heavily in encryption, firewalls, and on-device processing to ensure responsible AI implementation. 'AI means more data, but it also means more responsibility,' Lee remarked, underlining the brand's commitment to user trust. The Indian market, with over 690 million users, plays a critical role in this expansion. Lee observed that Indian consumers expect flagship-grade features even in mid-tier phones, which aligns with Oppo's mission to make GenAI features broadly accessible. 'The future is not about humans vs AI, but it's about humans and AI,' Lee concluded. As smartphones evolve into context-aware, real-time collaborators, Oppo envisions a future where AI enriches creativity, communication, and everyday convenience—always with empathy and user control at the forefront.

Water conservation becomes primary focus of MNREGS in UP

Lucknow: Water conservation has become a sharp focus of the Centre's Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) in Uttar Pradesh , with the scheme's expenditure for this purpose reaching an all-time high of over 85% of the amount allocated under Natural Resource Management (NRM). Data show that the expenditure grew by around 35% from just over 61% of the NRM in 2024-25. The previous high was in 2022-23 when 61.89% of the NRM expenditure was directed towards water conservation. This, however, dropped to just over 54% in 2023-24. Officials said by prioritising NRM expenditure in Mission Water Conservation (MWC) blocks, the MNREGS aims to address water scarcity issues, improve agricultural productivity, and build climate resilience in vulnerable areas. MWC blocks are specific rural blocks identified for special attention in water conservation efforts. Ministry of rural development has recently mandated that at least 65% of the expenditure within MWC blocks under the MNREGS should be allocated to NRM. The focus is designed to enhance water conservation efforts and promote sustainable resource management in these areas. The 65% expenditure is specifically earmarked for NRM activities, which may include water conservation measures like farm ponds, rainwater harvesting, soil moisture conservation and other related works. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Experts said by tying MNREGS funds to NRM activities in these blocks, the govt aims to use guaranteed employment to simultaneously build critical assets. This essentially supports rain-fed agriculture that is often vulnerable to climate fluctuations. The focus on water conservation, experts said, increases soil moisture and water availability to boost crop productivity, besides helping farmers to increase their income – eventually reducing migration from rural areas. It is also seen as an integrated approach to rural development. Experts said to ensure continued success, local capacity building, community participation and technical support for quality asset creation must be prioritised.

Beat You: This Brand Has Unveiled Its First Tri-Foldable Concept Device Before Samsung

Last Updated: Tecno has unveiled its concept tri-foldable device and did that before Samsung showcases its own product Tecno is the new name entering the tri-foldable segment and it has beaten Samsung by unveiling its Fold concept earlier this week. We're finally seeing foldable phones become more pocketable, at least in their dimensions, and brands are already moving to other form factors with tri-foldable becoming the latest pick of the bunch. The new device is part of Tecno's Phantom Fold series and it will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next year. Tecno says its tri-foldable device has been divided into three sections like the other brands and has a folding design in G-shape. The company has made the inner screen foldable inwards in two phases, which is claimed to protect the panel from scratches. The secondary cover screen is the default size for a regular smartphone. It has adopted a dual-hinge mechanism so that the tri-folding process does not take a hit in a few years. The company has also gone with a self-locking system which ensures there are no gaps when you fold the tri-foldable device. Talking about the screens, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold carries a 9.4-inch display when all the layers are open. It has a dual camera system on the hinge which brings a unique way to click photos. The company says it has a thickness of 11.49mm when folded and 3.49mm when unfolded, which makes it the thinnest tri-foldable device to be publicly showcased. We expect the Phantom Ultimate G Fold to be powered by a high-end chipset but intrigued to see how it fits a battery unit, and how big it might be. Tecno has made a habit of launching some unique products. It had recently unveiled a sleek phone mirroring the Galaxy S25 Edge and the rumored iPhone 17 Air model. The Tecno device manages to pack a 5,000mAh battery which is a lot bigger than what Samsung has managed and Apple could bring later this year. And we also hope to see Samsung's own tri-fold device launch before the end of 2025, as reports have suggested. view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 16:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
