US Yanks Visa for Brazil Judge Citing Bolsonaro ‘Witch Hunt'
(Bloomberg) -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he's revoking the visa for Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after the high court sent police to raid the home of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of his trial on charges he attempted a coup to remain in power. The Dutch Intersection Is Coming to Save Your Life Mumbai Facelift Is Inspired by 200-Year-Old New York Blueprint How San Jose's Mayor Is Working to Build an AI Capital Milan Corruption Probe Casts Shadow Over City's Property Boom LA Homelessness Drops for Second Year In a social media post, Rubio said that Moraes' 'allies on the court' as well as their close relatives will also have their visas revoked immediately. Moraes is presiding over the trial of Bolsonaro, who narrowly lost his 2022 reelection bid to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. 'Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes's political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil's shores to target Americans,' Rubio wrote. Moraes has also led a high-profile effort in Brazil to rein in misinformation and hate speech online. Lula, as the Brazilian president is known, on Saturday offered support to the Supreme Court's justices and said he's certain that 'no kind of intimidation or threat from anyone' will compromise the nation's institutions in their mission to defend the rule of law. 'The interference of one country in the judiciary of another is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty between nations,' according to a statement published by Brazilian president on Saturday. Rubio's move deepens the high-stakes standoff between the governments of the Western Hemisphere's most populous nations, after US President Donald Trump threatened last week to apply punishing import levies on Brazilian goods unless Bolsonaro's trial is ended. Lula has rejected Trump's push as improper foreign intervention, and has sought to rally national sentiment against the threatened 50% tariff. Trump cited the treatment of Bolsonaro and what he claims are unfair trade practices when he announced the tariff threat. Following the Friday morning raid, which also included the placement of an ankle monitor on the ex-president, his son Senator Flavio Bolsonaro made an appeal to Trump on social media to 'suspend the 50% tariff on Brazilian imports and impose individual sanctions' instead. The post was later deleted. Under the Brazil Supreme Court ruling, Bolsonaro is also prohibited from communicating with foreign diplomats and getting close to embassies where he could seek shelter. Moraes, who authored the decision, cited obstruction of justice and a flight risk as motives for the measures. --With assistance from Andrew Rosati and Rachel Gamarski. Israel and Syria agree to ceasefire, US ambassador to Turkey says
US ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said on Friday that Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire supported by Turkey, Jordan and neighbors. On Wednesday, Israel launched airstrikes in Damascus, while also hitting government forces in the south, demanding they withdraw and saying that Israel aimed to protect Syrian Druze - part of a small but influential minority that also has followers in Lebanon and Israel. 'We call upon Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity,' Mr Barrack said in a post on X. The Israeli embassy in Washington and Syrian Consulate in Canada did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The ceasefire announcement came after the US worked to put an end to the conflict. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said steps had been agreed to end a 'troubling and horrifying situation'. It also followed what appeared to be a de-escalation of the conflict after government troops withdrew from Sweida, where violence had been centered. - Reuters (c) Copyright Thomson Reuters 2025

Turkey's Fidan tells Rubio Syria conflict needs to end now ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone call that the conflict in Syria needs to end immediately, a Turkish foreign ministry source said on Saturday. Fidan said that he supports the constructive role the United States is playing in Syria and Turkey is ready to work with it to achieve a lasting end to the conflict, the source said. "Fidan said that Israel's interventions in Syrian territory further exacerbate the problem, and that any attack on Syria's territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty also undermines regional peace efforts," the source said. On Friday, the U.S. envoy to Turkey said Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire after days of bloodshed in the predominantly Druze area that has killed over 300 people.
