Prime Video's 'Ballard' Cast and Characters, Explained
From Murder, She Wrote's Jessica Fletcher, Law and Order's Olivia Benson, and The X Files' Dana Scully to Mare of Easttown's Mare Sheehan, Veronica Mars, and Jessica Jones—there is absolutely no such thing as "too many" kick-ass female detectives. 5 shows like 'Duster' to watch after the season 1 finale
Created by science-fiction wunderkind (well, depending on who you ask) J.J. Abrams, "Duster" just wrapped up its first season on HBO Max with a banger of a finale that left a lot of room for more story, if the streaming service orders season 2. The crime thriller is an entertaining, action-packed ride that stars Josh Holloway as Jim Ellis, a getaway driver in 1970s Southwest America who gets pulled into a risky alliance with ambitious FBI agent Nina Hayes (Rachel Hilson). Her target: his boss Ezra Saxton (Keith David), the untouchable head of a sprawling criminal enterprise. Filled with tons of action and good old-fashioned detective work, "Duster" made for an exciting genre entry. While you wait to hear about season 2, here are some other great shows like "Duster" to watch next. Set against the same 1970s Southwestern backdrop as "Duster," "Dark Winds" is another great crime drama to sink your teeth into. It focuses on three officers of the Navajo Tribal Police in their efforts to keep the peace in a community that has been thoroughly neglected by the U.S. government, to the extent that they are beginning to see the rise of extremist groups. Based on a novel series by Tony Hillerman, "Dark Winds" cultivates a unique atmosphere that makes it a perfect watch for fans of psychological thrillers. AMC has aired three seasons, and a fourth season has been ordered. Watch seasons 1-2 on Netflix and all 3 seasons on AMC Plus We love a crime drama with a no-nonsense police woman desperately trying to take down the bad guys in her community. While Nina attempts to bust the leader of a local crime syndicate in "Duster," Mare (Kate Winslet) in Mare of Easttown is committed to investigating the murder of a local teen. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. And there's no easy way to say this, but Mare's been going through a lot as we start off the show. She's recently divorced, her son died by suicide, she's embroiled in a custody battle with her late son's girlfriend for custody of her grandson, and public confidence in her abilities as a detective is at an all-time low, since another girl from their community has been missing for a year. And yet, Mare perseveres. With a stunning lead performance from Winslet, "Mare of Easttown" is an all-time great limited series. Watch on HBO Max Although "Godfather of Harlem," as the name suggests, takes place in New York City, some 3,000 miles away from the setting of "Duster," it features a similar crime lord as we see in Keith David's Saxton. Based on a true story, it stars Forest Whitaker as Bumpy Johnson, who, after serving 10 years in prison, returns home to Harlem in the early 1960s and goes toe-to-toe against the Italian mob to regain control of his old neighborhood. "Godfather of Harlem" received positive reviews from critics and ran for four seasons on MGM Plus. The fact that it was on this network rather than one with a bit more cachet among viewers is likely the cause of its lack of name recognition, but rest assured, it's a great watch. Watch on MGM Plus and seasons 1-3 on Hulu If you had told us 20 years ago that one of the best ever crime dramas on television would star Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, we wouldn't have believed you. And yet here we are. The noirish, downbeat "True Detective" is a classic in its genre, revolving around two Louisiana policemen returning to a murder case that they had initially investigated 17 years earlier. With strong performances from both Harrelson and McConaughey, a moody production design, and a thoroughly compelling narrative, the first season of "True Detective" was one for the books. Although the anthology series couldn't live up to its legacy in later seasons, it still deserves credit for reinvigorating the genre on television. Watch on HBO Max When we look at crime dramas, nine times out of ten, they're tied up in some kind of drug trafficking situation. After all, this isn't the Old West, and no one's out here robbing stagecoaches anymore. That's certainly the case in "Hotel Cocaine," a stylish throwback to 1970s Miami, where cocaine was king. It stars Danny Pino as Roman Compte, a Cuban immigrant who runs the Mutiny Hotel, an establishment known for being a revolving door of drug lords, CIA operatives, and politicians. But Compte winds up in over his head when he's courted by both his family in the drug world and government agents who want him to work as a double agent. The guy's just trying to run a hotel, you know? Watch on MGM Plus

11 Crime Thrillers You'll Love If You Adored Netflix's 'Dept. Q'
Fans of Dept. Q will know that there is nothing quite like a chilling detective series that involves haunting cases and plot twists that will leave you thinking about them long the end of an episode. Since its release, the Danish series, which is based on Jussi Adler-Olsen's best selling novels, has raised the bar for slow-burn murder mysteries. So, if you've already finishing watching all of Netflix's latest crime thriller Dept. Q, and are looking for the next show to watch, then there a number of British crime thrillers and Nordic styled, psychologically charged series for you to add to your to-watch list. From classic thrillers with dark twists, unconventional storylines and characters such as The Chestnut Man, Line Of Duty and Slow Horses and more, we're certain that you'll love these series just as much as you enjoyed Dept. Q. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE Given that Dept. Q was based off of a Scandinavian noir, there's a good chance you'll also enjoy The Chestnut Man, a Netflix series of the same genre. Set in Copenhagen, the six part series sees detectives on a mission to bring down a sinister serial killer. New to Netflix and ready to fill your Dept. Q- shaped hole, this story is based on author Jane Harper's book of the same name and circles around a murder in a small Australian town... and how it dredges up long-buried secrets. Ready to spend a lot of time wondering what on earth is going on? Then 'Crow Girl' is for you. Also adapted from a scandi noir book series, this Paramount Plus series has a detective investigating a series of brutal murders - and follows the effect the case has on her life and those around her. Plus a load more twists we can't even go into... there's a definite plot parallel with Dept Q that we can't reveal for now... A four-part Channel 4 drama so affecting I can still remember watching every scene of the final years later. David Tennant plays a doctor whose wife and children are all killed in a house fire. The shocking twists and turns will stay with you. If you're looking for detectives with haunted pasts and thousand mile stares, they don't come any better than Mare. Head detective in a small town Mare has lived in all her life (and was a local sporting hero in High School), her life is complicated enough, before a brutal crime rocks the community - and her own friends and family. A real career-best performance from Winslet, you'll be totally gripped. Lots of people turn away from 'Unforgotten' as 'another ITV drama' but if you enjoy a series-long hunt for cold-case justice, this British show leads the pack. Nicola Walker is brilliant as the head of a cold-case unit who'll stop at nothing to unearth criminals who think they've got away with murder. Set in a small coastal town in Dorset that has been scarred by the murder of a young boy, David Tennant and Olivia Colman star as detectives who must solve the case as a wild media frenzy ensues as secrets within the town unravel. After refusing to cover up an unauthorised shooting by his own team, DS Steve Arnott is transferred to the Anti-Corruption unit created with the intention of cracking down on corruption within his police force. Slow Horses sees disgraced MI5 agents expelled to a dead-end department where they are often tasked with boring tasks and cases that are intended to make them want to leave, as a punishment for their failures. This crime thriller sees police sergeant Catherine Cawood tackle drug wars in a small Yorkshire town while battling her own personal trauma, as she lives with her sister who is recovering heroin addict, and trying to raise her eight-year-old grandson. Idris Elba stars as John Luther, a homicide detective that is an expert in understanding the minds of murderers. Filled with noir, pyschological tension, this series will have you hooked on its intensity.

Brazil's military police kill leader of a drug trafficking group in a Rio favela
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilian military police on Tuesday killed the main leader of a drug trafficking group in a Rio de Janeiro favela as well as two other suspected criminals, authorities said. A fierce shootout broke out after Rio's military police found Thiago da Silva Folly in a bunker in the Mare complex of low-income neighborhoods, police said. Folly was killed, while another two were wounded and taken to a hospital, but later died from their injuries. Folly was the main leader of the Pure Third Command faction in Mare, police said. 'The objective was to arrest the leader of the faction, but he chose to engage in confrontation,' Gov. Cláudio Castro was quoted as saying in the statement. 'Once again, we demonstrate that there will be no truce for these extremely violent criminals.' Police said Folly had 227 criminal charges against him and 17 outstanding arrest warrants. One of the warrants was related to the killing of two military police officers during an operation in Mare in June. Folly was also under investigation for his involvement in the death of a soldier in 2014 and for attacks on members of the National Public Security Force in 2016, police added. The organ also said he also coordinated paramilitary training within the community. The operation, launched early Tuesday, shut down main roads and rerouted bus lines. Local news outlet G1 reported that at least two schools were closed. ____ Follow AP's coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at
