"If Cases Filed For Feeding Pigeons, Why Not For Strays": Ex-Minister To NDTV
New Delhi: Former Union Minister Vijay Goel has called for legal action against individuals feeding stray dogs in public places in Delhi, citing rising cases of dog bites across the capital. In a conversation with NDTV, Mr Goel said such feeding should attract fines and FIRs, similar to recent legal action taken against pigeon feeders in Mumbai. If FIRs can be filed against those who feed pigeons, why not against those who feed stray dogs on the streets?" Mr Goel asked, referring to a recent Maharashtra High Court order in which the BMC fined 107 individuals for feeding pigeons and the court mandated additional FIRs. Mr Goel said the issue of stray dog attacks has turned into a public health hazard and requires an immediate and coordinated response from the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation. He also demanded a compensation policy for victims of dog bites, pointing to the fatal risk of rabies. "More than 20,000 people die from rabies every year in India. There is no known cure once symptoms appear," he said. Mr Goel accused both the state and civic agencies of failing to implement sterilisation and vaccination programs effectively. He said civil defence volunteers and local police should be deployed to stop the public feeding of stray dogs. He put forward five key demands: Immediate compensation to citizens attacked by stray dogs. Launch of a toll-free helpline for reporting dog bite incidents. Fines and FIRs against those feeding stray dogs in public areas. Initiation of a citywide stray dog census to guide intervention planning. Official request to the Centre to amend Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules and allocate funding and staff to municipal agencies. He also urged that at least one government-run dog shelter be set up as a starting point, stating that the Municipal Corporation's mandate on sterilisation and vaccination has seen "gross negligence." Mr Goel warned that without urgent action, the issue could evolve into a serious legal and public health crisis. His statement comes as NDTV continues its special campaign- 'India's Dog Dilemma,' highlighting the escalating tension between urban safety, legal responsibility, and animal rights. With rising bite incidents and little clarity on enforcement, the question remains: who will take ownership of Delhi's stray dog crisis before it turns unmanageable?

"Great Relief": Uma Bharati Applauds Malegaon Blast Verdict
New Delhi: Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Uma Bharati said the verdict in the Malegaon case was a "great relief" to her. All seven accused in the 17-year-old case were acquitted today by a special court. The judge said the prosecution failed to prove the allegations in the case and that all seven accused deserve the benefit of doubt. "My reverence to the people because they were the ones to face any torture or physical pain but they were not ready to give the names," Uma Bharati told NDTV in an exclusive interview. "They were forced to name the people of some right wing organisation, some BJP leaders. It is because of the torture they faced and ultimately they tolerated it... The whole country, the whole Hindu community, the whole organisation now honours them. We worship them," she added. During the years-long trial, the prosecution had examined 323 witnesses, of whom nearly 40 turned hostile. Pointing to the discrepancies in the evidence, the court said terrorism has no religion, but it cannot convict on mere perception. Uma Bharati slammed those who suspected the right wing of involvement in the blasts. More Muslims stayed back in India than the number that went to Pakistan, because they trusted the Hindus. Now they were blaming the Hindus for the Malegaon blast. "They should be ashamed and they should apologise," she said. The blast occurred on the night of September 29 2008, near Bhikku Chowk in the communally tense town, located about 200 km from Mumbai, during the holy month of Ramzan. A powerful bomb tore through an area near a mosque, killing six people and injuring more than a hundred. Today, all seven accused in the case, including former BJP MP Pragya Thakur and former army officer Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit, were acquitted.

'Ok, Leave Rs 150, But At Least Return My Rs 750': Malegaon Blast Accused To Court
During the court hearing, Kulkarni stated that Rs 900 was confiscated from him at the time of his arrest, but only Rs 750 was officially recorded Sameer Kulkarni, one of the seven individuals acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, made an unusual request in court, he asked for his Rs 750, confiscated during his arrest, to be returned. During the court hearing, Kulkarni stated that Rs 900 was confiscated from him at the time of his arrest, but only Rs 750 was officially recorded. 'During the arrest, Rs 900 was confiscated from me, but only Rs 750 was shown on paper. Ok, leave Rs 150, but at least return my Rs 750," he told the court. The presiding judge noted the request but reminded him that court directives forbid the return of any case property until further orders. Though Kulkarni is now free, he must wait for the official clearance to retrieve the amount, NDTV reported. Kulkarni also asked for permission to raise nationalist slogans such as 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai" for three seconds, but the court declined, citing the need to maintain discipline in court proceedings. About Malegaon Blast Case Seventeen years after the Malegaon blast killed six people and injured more than 100, a special court in Mumbai on Thursday acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, declaring a lack of 'reliable and cogent evidence." The court sated, 'Terrorism has no religion" and warned against convictions based on perception alone. Additionally, the court awarded compensation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act: Rs 2 lakh each to the six victims' families and Rs 50,000 to each of the injured 101 individuals. The father of the youngest victim, 10-year-old Farheen, decried the verdict as unacceptable and vowed to take the matter to the Supreme Court. The trial, initiated by the Maharashtra ATS in 2018 and later overseen by the NIA, involved testimony from 323 witnesses. Thirty-seven turned hostile during proceedings. Special Judge AK Lahoti flagged serious shortcomings in the prosecution's case, noting that suspicion alone could not serve as proof. With these findings, the accused were granted the benefit of the doubt and released. (With inputs from PTI) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Neeraj Pandey criticises AI-edited climax of 'Raanjhanaa' by producers; calls it 'utterly disrespectful'
Aanand L. Rai-directed 'Raanjhanaa,' starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor in the lead, is all set to re-release in Tamil Nadu with a different climax, edited using artificial intelligence. The producers, Eros International Media, reworked the movie and included a happy ending. The use of artificial intelligence to change a film's artistic integrity has sparked a heated debate about creative control and the future of cinema. Several filmmakers and writers slammed the move by the makers, and now, director Neeraj Pandey has joined the list. Here's a closer look at what Neeraj Pandey said. Neeraj Pandey calls the AI-edited climax of 'Raanjhanaa' 'disrespectful' In an interview with NDTV, Pandey said, "AI is just a tool. A human being is operating it. So it's the intent behind its use that matters. And if a piece of cinema is being altered without involving the director and writer, then it's utterly disrespectful." The director said that he was shocked. Elaborating further, he said if the makers are implying that they have the rights and they can do anything, "that's still no excuse." He stated that the production house could have communicated the same with Aanand L. Rai and the other creators involved in the movie. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pierce Brosnan's Wife Lost 120 Pounds - This Is Her Now Undo He said, "It would have been the right thing to do." Neeraj Pandey on the use of AI in movies The 'Special 26' director acknowledged that the process of moviemaking has evolved with technology. He said, "While it (AI) is still nascent, it will develop rapidly. Hopefully, we'll use it well—and not misuse it." Eros on backlash The production house published a big statement on the issue. Defending their move, it called the recreated version "a legally compliant, transparently labelled, and artistically guided creative edition intended for Tamil-speaking audiences." Dhanush Turns 42! They added that AI was not the autonomous content generator for the new ending.
