As the browser wars heat up, here are the hottest alternatives to Chrome and Safari in 2025

Google Chrome and Apple's Safari currently dominate the web browser market, with Chrome holding a significant share due to the tech giant's ongoing innovations, particularly in integrating generative AI into its search functionalities. However, users seeking alternatives will find a variety of browsers aiming to challenge these industry giants. To help navigate the competitive landscape of the browser wars, we've compiled an overview of some of the top alternative browsers available today. This includes browsers leveraging AI, open-source browsers that promote customization and privacy, and 'mindful browsers'—a new term that refers to browsers designed to enhance user well-being. Perplexity is the most recent startup in the space to launch an AI-powered web browser. Called Comet, the company's new product acts as a chatbot-based search engine, and can perform actions like summarizing emails, browsing web pages, and performing tasks such as sending calendar invites. It's currently only available to users with Perplexity's $200/month Max plan, but there's also a waitlist where people can sign up. The Browser Company, the startup behind the Arc browser, recently introduced Dia, its AI-centric browser that looks similar to Google Chrome but with an AI chat tool. Currently available as an invite-only beta, Dia is designed to help users navigate the web more easily. It's able to look at every website that a user has visited and every website they're logged into, enabling it to help you find information and perform tasks. For instance, Dia can provide information about the page a user is currently browsing, answer questions about a product, and summarize uploaded files. To get early access to Dia, users have to be an Arc member. Non-members can join the waitlist. Another recent entry into the AI agentic browser war is Opera's Neon, which has contextual awareness and can do things like researching, shopping, and writing snippets of code. Notably, it can even perform tasks while the user is offline. Neon has yet to become available, but people can join the waitlist. It will be a subscription product; however, Opera hasn't announced pricing yet. According to Reuters, OpenAI may also be releasing an AI-powered web browser as soon as July. The browser is reported to operate inside ChatGPT, letting users browse websites inside the chatbot instead of directing to outside links. Brave is among the more well-known privacy-first browsers, popular for its built-in ad and tracker blocking capabilities. It also has a gamified approach to browsing, rewarding users with its own cryptocurrency called Basic Attention Token (BAT). When users choose to opt in to view ads, supporting their favorite websites, they get a share of the ad revenue. Additional features include a VPN service, an AI assistant, and a video calling feature. DuckDuckGo is another browser that many people are probably already familiar with, thanks to its search engine by the same name. Launched in 2008, the company recently made significant investments in its browser to stay competitive by introducing generative AI features, such as a chatbot. It also enhanced its scam blocker to detect a wider range of scams, including fake cryptocurrency exchanges, scareware tactics, and fraudulent e-commerce websites. In addition to blocking scams, DuckDuckGo prevents trackers and ads, and it doesn't track user data, resulting in fewer pop-ups for users. Ladybird, led by GitHub co-founder and former CEO Chris Wanstrath, has an ambitious mission compared to other rivals: it aims to build an entirely new open-source browser from scratch. This means it will not rely on code from existing browsers, a feat that has rarely been accomplished. Most alternative web browsers depend on the Chromium open-source project maintained by Google, which is the most widely used base for many browsers. Like other privacy-focused browsers, Ladybird will offer features to minimize data collection, such as a built-in ad blocker and the ability to block third-party cookies. The browser has yet to be launched, with an alpha version scheduled for release in 2026 for early adopters, available on Linux and macOS. Vivaldi is a Chromium-based browser created by one of the original developers of the Opera browser. Its biggest selling point is its customizable user interface, which allows users to change the appearance and enable or disable features. One unique feature is that the browser window changes color to match the website being viewed. Other key features include ad blocking, a password manager, no user data tracking, and productivity tools such as a calendar and notes. Opera launched the Air browser in February, becoming one of the first mindfulness-themed browsers in the space. While Opera Air functions like a typical web browser, it includes unique features designed to support mental well-being. These features consist of break reminders and breathing exercises. Another feature, called 'Boosts,' provides a selection of binaural beats to either help improve focus or relaxation. SigmaOS is a Mac-only browser featuring a workspace-style interface that emphasizes productivity. It displays tabs vertically, allowing users to treat them like a to-do list that can be marked as complete or snoozed for later. Users can create workspaces—essentially groups of tabs—to better organize different activities, such as separating work from entertainment. This Y Combinator-backed browser has been around for a few years now and has most recently begun introducing more AI features, including the ability to summarize various elements of a web page, such as ratings, reviews, and prices. It also has an AI assistant that can answer questions, translate text, and rewrite content. SigmaOS is free to use, but users who want more than three workspaces can subscribe to a plan for $8 per month, which provides unlimited workspaces. Zen Browser aims to create a 'calmer internet' with its open-source browser. Zen lets users organize tabs into Workspaces, offers Split View to view two tabs side by side, among other productivity-focused features. Users can also enhance their browsing experience with community-made plugins and themes, such as a mod that makes the tab background transparent.

OpenAI Set to Launch AI Web Browser

OpenAI's browser is built atop Chromium, Google's own open-source browser code. Chromium is the source code for Google Chrome, as well as many competing browsers, including Microsoft's Edge and Opera. OpenAI is close to releasing an AI-powered web browser that will challenge Alphabet's Google Chrome. The browser is slated to launch in the coming weeks and aims to use artificial intelligence to fundamentally change how consumers browse the web. It will give OpenAI more direct access to a cornerstone of Google's success: user data. If adopted by the 500 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, OpenAI's browser could put pressure on a key component of rival Google's ad-money spigot. Chrome is an important pillar of Alphabet's ad business, which makes up nearly three-quarters of its revenue, as Chrome provides user information to help Alphabet target ads more effectively and profitably, and also gives Google a way to route search traffic to its own engine by default. OpenAI's browser is designed to keep some user interactions within a ChatGPT-like native chat interface instead of clicking through to websites. The browser is part of a broader strategy by OpenAI to weave its services across the personal and work lives of consumers. ALSO READ: How to Control Generative AI Content for Brand Integrity The web browser would allow OpenAI to directly integrate its AI agent products, such as Operator, into the browsing experience, enabling the browser to carry out tasks on behalf of the user. The browser's access to a user's web activity would make it the ideal platform for AI 'agents' that can take actions on their behalf, like booking reservations or filling out forms, directly within the websites they use. OpenAI's browser is built atop Chromium, Google's own open-source browser code. Chromium is the source code for Google Chrome, as well as many competing browsers, including Microsoft's Edge and Opera. Last year, OpenAI hired two longtime Google Vice Presidents who were part of the original team that developed Google Chrome. An OpenAI executive testified in April that the company would be interested in buying Chrome if antitrust enforcers succeeded in forcing the sale. Google has not offered Chrome for sale. The company has said it plans to appeal the ruling that it holds a monopoly. OpenAI decided to build its own browser, rather than simply a 'plug-in' on top of another company's browser, in order to have more control over the data it can collect. ‘It's a high-wire act. Every choice matters': Danielle de Niese takes on opera's most notorious femme fatale

Not a flounce, ruffle or rose clenched between teeth is in sight when Danielle de Niese sashays onstage as Carmen – dressed in a boiler suit. The Australian-born lyric soprano's Carmen will not be the Gypsy seductress audiences have come to expect. In Opera Australia's new production, set in present-day Seville, she is a grounded woman ending another long shift in a cigarette factory. She loosens the fastenings around the neck of her uniform – a glimpse of glistening shoulder, an arch of the back and throat. To her female co-workers, she is hot, exhausted and stiff. To the lads waiting and watching, she is something else. 'Through the male gaze, something functional can appear alluring,' De Niese says. 'To the males watching that moment becomes charged.' De Niese, speaking to the Guardian in June shortly after arriving in the country to begin rehearsals for her debut performance in the Bizet opera, says her iteration of Carmen has not emerged out of a desire to 'just do something different for the sake of it'. 'I just want every word, every gesture, to feel believable. That's the only thing that matters.' Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning For years, De Niese's fans had nudged her toward Carmen – a natural fit, they assumed, for a sultry-looking soprano known as much for her theatrical flair as her vocal precision. But until now she had resisted the obvious casting. 'It wasn't about the aria's reputation,' she says of the instantly recognisable Habanera, Carmen's opening solo. 'It was the story in the lyrics that really caught me. I realised I'd never actually listened to them before – not really.' What drew her in was the way Carmen's fate is foretold in her first few lines: Love is a rebellious bird / That no one can tame. 'We hear the Habanera and think, 'Oh here she comes, the femme fatale.' But the text is full of foreboding. It's a warning. That's what I wanted to tell – not just the song, but the story.' In this new take on Carmen, directed by Melbourne Theatre Company's Anne-Louise Sarks, cliches are both acknowledged and upended. In one sequence, the ensemble parades through a surreal Carmen-themed carnival, donning the very stereotypes the opera has long perpetuated – mantillas, castanets, off-the-shoulder peasant blouses. But the Carmen in this production is emotionally complex – proud, spirited and caught in a love that corrodes as much as it consumes. 'I'm really interested in the kind of love that can unravel you,' De Niese says. 'The kind that starts as passion and turns into something toxic – and you don't see it happening until you've lost yourself.' This is the challenge De Niese has set herself: not to reinvent Carmen, but to restore her complexity. 'I don't want her to be a cool enigma,' she says. 'I want her to feel like someone you know. Someone whose choices you understand, even if you don't agree with them.' She points to the recent testimony of singer Cassie Ventura in her case against her ex-boyfriend Sean 'Diddy' Combs as a contemporary example of 'those emotional entanglements, that blurring of control and desire. That's very real. And very now.' To an outsider looking in, De Niese's own life appears less than real, more like a fairytale. Born in Melbourne to Sri Lankan parents, her first taste of fame came early, becoming Young Talent Time Discovery Quest's youngest ever winner at the age of nine in 1988. The family moved to Los Angeles, and at the age of 16, De Niese won an Emmy for her role as a regular guest host of the TV program LA Kids. By then, the child prodigy had already made her operatic debut with the Los Angeles Opera. At 19 she was singing Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro at the Metropolitan Opera. Seven years later, she wowed audiences as Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare at the prestigious Glyndebourne festival. Marriage to Gus Christie, the third generation of Christies to own and operate Glyndebourne, followed. Her life as lady of the manor at the historic English estate is 'idyllic', she admits, but it took a bit of work initially to be accepted by elitists as something more than an American interloper. She was interrogated about her knowledge of cricket – amusing she concedes, given her Australian and Sri Lankan backgrounds – and pilloried when the last of Glyndebourne's famous dynasty of pugs died and she replaced them with bulldogs and Portuguese waterdogs. Today, she graciously wears the New York Times title of 'opera's coolest soprano', and in 2023 Tatler named her as one of Britain's 25 best dressed. 'People see the highlights and think it was all silver platter,' she says. But her career, she insists, has not been filled with shortcuts: 'I've been the tortoise, not the hare. I've taken risks, yes, but every step, slow. Every choice, deliberate.' That discipline has preserved her voice – and allowed it to evolve. 'Ten years ago, I couldn't have sung Carmen,' she says. 'Now it sits perfectly. My voice has broadened, darkened. It feels like it's grown into its home.' As Carmen, she intends to do just that. Not an archetype, not a cautionary tale – but a woman, vivid and vulnerable, stepping out from the smoke, fully alive. 'Opera is a high-wire act,' she says. 'Every choice matters. But the most important one is this: tell the story like it's happening for the first time. Make it real.' Opera Australia's Carmen runs until 19 September at Sydney Opera House; and from 15-25 November at Regent Theatre, Melbourne

OpenAI's own web browser could arrive within weeks

OpenAI is said to be almost ready to unleash its own web browser, which could be out in the wild within weeks. According to Reuters sources, the company is aiming to more deeply integrate its services into users' work and personal lives, and the browser is part of that strategy (as is its push into hardware ). Naturally, the browser is slated to have a ChatGPT-style chatbot baked in. OpenAI is reportedly looking to use the browser to capture more user data — a strategy that has worked out to Google's benefit with Chrome. The browser is also expected to have agentic AI features such as Operator , which are billed as tools that can carry out actions (such as booking reservations) on a user's behalf. Having direct access to information like web browsing data may make it easier for OpenAI to pull that off. The browser is said to be designed to keep many interactions within an AI chatbot interface rather than directing users to websites. As with Google's AI Overviews, this could dissuade people from clicking through to the sources of information that the likes of ChatGPT rely on, potentially depriving website operators of valuable traffic. If OpenAI does start offering users access to its own browser, it would be following Perplexity, which released a browser with agentic AI functions on Wednesday. That browser, Comet, is currently only available to those with a $200 per month Perplexity Max subscription. Opera also released a "fully agentic" browser back in May. While ChatGPT has more than 500 million weekly active users that OpenAI can market Its browser to, the company will face a tough battle if it truly wants to challenge Chrome, which is estimated to have more than 3 billion users. As it happens, OpenAI's browser is reportedly built on Chromium, Google's open-source code on which Chrome, Comet, Microsoft Edge and Opera run. Reports last year suggested that OpenAI may build its own browser after hiring two former Google execs who helped create Chrome. Google has long tapped into data garnered through Chrome to help with ad targeting. However, the Department of Justice late last year said it wanted Google to sell off Chrome . A judge ruled earlier in 2024 that Google was a "monopolist" in the search sector and that it violated the Sherman Act (Google plans to appeal the ruling ). OpenAI has said that were Google forced to sell off Chrome, it would be interested in snapping up the world's most popular browser .

From Beyoncé to Lady Gaga, this Newton designer is turning heads with his custom kicks

'Her talent is otherworldly,' Solo said. 'I have no words to say of how honored I am to get her seal of approval.' Parkwood Entertainment Seeing Beyoncé sport his boots in London was just the latest landmark achievement for Solo, whose fancy footwear has previously been worn by high-profile stars like Britney Spears, FKA Twigs, Lucy Liu, Florence Pugh, Julia Fox, and GloRilla. The designer noted that creating a piece for Queen Bey's latest tour — which stops in Atlanta this weekend before her final shows in Las Vegas July 25 and 26 — brought a level of excitement that he hadn't felt since he collaborated with Lady Gaga on a pair of custom Lady Dahlia thigh-high boots that she wore in 2014 during her 'ArtRave: The Artpop Ball' tour. Solo launched his shoe brand in 2008 while studying sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. He was inspired to start designing footwear after seeing a pair of armadillo shoes from acclaimed British fashion designer Alexander McQueen in Time magazine. Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff Fast-forward to today, and Solo has become a budding star in the fashion world, with his Lady Gaga collaboration earning a 'Thom's creations have always obscured the line between sculpture and shoes, which is why I have always been such a fan of his work,' Michelle Finamore, the 'Gender Bending Fashion' exhibit's curator and a curatorial consultant at Historic New England, told the Globe in an email. Yet, as his career was reaching new heights prior to the pandemic, Solo was forced to pivot in 2020, he said, as demand for custom luxury clothing halted. Instead of closing shop, Solo searched for a factory in Italy to create his first ready-to-wear collection, which debuted in 2021. Courtesy of Parkwood Entertainment Designing footwear that tells stories and accentuates the power of women has always been at the forefront of Solo's work. For Beyoncé's boots, Solo crafted a pair of black nappa leather heels wrapped in gold belt buckles and bullet casings, he said, combining the tour's Americana aesthetic with a Parisian twist, inspired by the 'There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears that comes with it, and a lot of sacrifice, but it's all so worth it, because everything I do is a love letter to women,' Solo said. Solo hinted that his next collection has more complex tales to tell, and will also include a collaboration with a notable designer. Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff But even as he continues to grow his brand, Solo admitted that being an emerging designer isn't easy, especially since the market is often dominated by larger companies. And to other young designers navigating the industry, Solo has one bit of advice: stay resilient. 'I get told 'No' 90 times a week, and then, out of nowhere, after we put in all the hard work, look what just happened: Beyoncé in London,' Solo said. 'Eventually all the 'No's' turn into 'Yes.' You just have to keep pushing through.' Advertisement
