No nomination for Ahmad Terriruddin as chief justice, says PH MP
by HIDAYATH HISHAM TAN Sri Ahmad Terriruddin Mohd Salleh's (picture) name is not among the candidates proposed for the chief justice post, said a Pakatan Harapan (PH) MP who attended a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday. Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, the MP said Anwar had made it clear during the meeting at Kompleks Seri Perdana that Terriruddin's name was not on the list submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for any senior judicial appointments. 'Ahmad Terriruddin's name is not there — not for chief justice, not for Court of Appeal president, not for chief judge of Malaya or chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak,' the MP said. The meeting was held amid ongoing controversy surrounding the vacancy in the judiciary's top post, and came days after an alleged leak of Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) minutes circulated online. The leaked document purportedly showed Ahmad Terriruddin's name shortlisted for chief justice, despite being linked to serious misconduct allegations. The MP declined to comment on the authenticity of the leaked document but confirmed that judicial appointments were a major topic of discussion during the session. Utusan Malaysia earlier reported that the meeting between Anwar and PH lawmakers also aimed to strengthen internal understanding within the coalition and clarify several pressing matters, including the chief justice selection. Anwar, when approached by reporters as he left the venue, described the discussion as 'very good', but did not disclose details of the hour-and-a-half-long meeting. 'It was very good. I'm heading to Shah Alam,' he said briefly, waving from his car window. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who was also present, confirmed that the judicial appointment was among the key issues addressed. He said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said gave a briefing to the MPs on Article 125 of the Federal Constitution. 'Azalina was present to explain matters related to the Constitution, especially Article 125. It also covered the formation of tribunals involving judges and other related issues,' said Fahmi, who is also the MP for Lembah Pantai and PKR's communications chief. Article 125 outlines the provisions for the appointment, tenure and removal of Federal Court judges, including the chief justice. Fahmi added that the MPs present received the discussion positively. 'We believe what was shared by the PM was well-received by all PH MPs,' he said. Further details are expected to be announced at the post-Cabinet press conference today.

Anwar assures critical judiciary vacancies will be resolved soon, says Loke
SUBANG JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured Pakatan Harapan (PH) members of parliament that a decision will be made soon to fill critical vacancies in the judiciary. Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who was present at the meeting yesterday, said the decision would be reached following the Conference of Rulers' meeting tomorrow. "We have received the full picture from the Prime Minister. "In cabinet, he had mentioned the matter and we were briefed from time to time, but yesterday he gave an overall briefing to our backbenchers so that they are fully informed of what is going on. "He made it very clear that a decision will be made soon to fill the vacancies. The biggest concern right now is the vacancies in the top tier of the judiciary, especially the position of Chief Justice. Are Malaysians to brace for another ‘rude shock' after PMX unveils 'one extraordinary appreciation' underway?
MAN-ON-THE-STREET Malaysians are seemingly busy second-guessing what Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has up his sleeve following his latest Facebook revelation of 'COMING: One extraordinary appreciation for Malaysians'. This prompted one commenter to state 'am impatient to know what new tax next', alluding to the latest revised and expanded Sales Tax and Service Tax (SST) which came into effect on July 1. Some wonder who is the character in PMX's meme with one commenter positing 'new Marvel hero, Cukaiman' while anther wondered whether it is 'Pokémon or Cukaimon'. Another commenter speculated that the surprise could well be in the form of: Financial assistance , perhaps in the form of additional cash assistance or public incentives; , perhaps in the form of additional cash assistance or public incentives; Economic announcements such as tax cuts, subsidies, or housing initiatives; such as tax cuts, subsidies, or housing initiatives; National recognition such as special National Day programmes or recognition for certain groups; such as special National Day programmes or recognition for certain groups; Launch of new programmes related to education, health or employment. Some cheeky commenters went to the extent of thinking the unthinkable – 'PMX is resigning'! On a serious note, the rolling out of goodies could have stemmed from the back-to-back close-door meeting that PMX had with ministers and Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya yesterday (July 14). Recall that PMX had a similar meeting with Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs on Friday (July 11). On the following day, he revealed that discussion during the meeting centred on matters related to taxation, rumours about RON95 petrol subsidies and the judiciary. Anid the current state of mounting trust deficit on PMX and his Madani machinery, it is vital that efforts are doubled to win back the trust of many disgruntled PH loyalists whose number has quadrupled following the undesirable outcome from the May 23 PKR central leadership polls. – July 15, 2025

BN's solo strategy in strongholds a tactical move, says analyst
Last Saturday, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan was reported to have said that BN might go solo in the Melaka election expected next year. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Barisan Nasional's (BN) suggestion of running solo in the states that it dominates while cooperating with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in other states could be a strategic move, provided that it is carefully planned, an analyst says. Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said that a flexible approach tailored by state could work if BN managed voter perceptions and maintained ties with PH at the federal level. He said BN could go solo in strongholds like Melaka and Johor, and partner with PH in states where PH or Perikatan Nasional (PN) hold the advantage such as Selangor, Penang and Kelantan. 'To make this strategy work, BN must clearly explain its position so that the public understands the rationale behind adopting different approaches in different states. 'At the same time, the strategic dialogue between BN and PH needs to be intensified to ensure coordinated action and maintain the stability of the unity government,' Awang Azman told FMT. He warned that if poorly handled, the 'friends at the federal level, rivals at the state level' approach could be seen as hypocritical and cause a loss of confidence in BN's integrity. He also said that the move risked alienating PH component parties, especially DAP and PKR, potentially undermining unity and cooperation at the federal level. Last Saturday, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan was reported to have said that BN might contest solo in the Melaka election expected next year. He said a thorough study would be conducted beforehand, as political dynamics and formulas differ from state to state. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said BN going solo in Melaka would come as no surprise, describing it as a 'warning shot' for Amanah and PH. Amanah had previously demanded an equal number of seats for the Melaka election, including in constituencies currently held by Umno. Azmi said the prior agreement between BN and PH had established that incumbent parties would retain the right to contest their seats, adding that Amanah should not overreach in its demands. 'In Melaka, BN holds the incumbency, having won 21 seats in the last state election. These should remain with BN and be agreed upon by PH. 'My concern is that Amanah is being used as a proxy to pressure BN into going solo.' It was reported last week that the Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division had passed a resolution at its annual meeting, urging PH to prepare for an independent contest. Earlier, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said in a Facebook video that BN was ready to face PH in a contest, even though they are allies at both the federal level and in Melaka.
