New fear unlocked: Your brand-new phone could turn into this moldy mess

TL;DR Porous materials, including some leather substitutes, are susceptible to getting damp and harboring the growth of mold. The new POCO X7 PRO features one colorway that includes just such an eco-leather panel on the handset's rear. Over on Reddit, one new X7 PRO owner has shared a pic that appears to show mold taking over the leather. You don't need to be a Last of Us fan to have a healthy fear of fungus, and anyone who's ever lived in a home infested with black mold can attest to how traumatic even seeing that first hint of it can be. And considering how often we're touching our phones everyday, holding them up against our faces, having a moldy phone is just about the worst thing we can imagine. That's exactly why we're feeling some second-hand discomfort upon checking out the image shared on Reddit by user Few_Combination5430 over on the site's POCO phone sub, detailing the fate of their new POCO X7 PRO: The X7 PRO comes in a few color variants — green, yellow, and black — and while the green and black options feature a dual-textured plastic back, the yellow version opts for a soft-touch eco-leather rear. The problem there is that while materials like metal, glass, and even plastic are relatively non-porous, that's not necessarily the case with artificial leather like POCO uses here. There are a lot of different ways to manufacture such materials, using polyurethane or even plant products, and depending on how that's done, these eco-leathers can have the same kind of porosity as natural leather. And just like real leather can get damp and moldy, that appears to be what's going on with the back of this X7 PRO. We've heard of phone cases getting moldy before, and while that's equally as gross, it's also something that's a little easier to move on from — diching the case, giving the phone's hard surfaces a through disinfecting, and picking up a new (maybe less porous) case. When it's your actual phone itself that's harboring a small fungal colony, the best path forward isn't as clear. Of course, prevention is often the best medicine, and you're probably much better off just avoiding a moldy phone in the first place. That means thinking about material choices when making your purchasing decision, and just keeping your phone away from particularly damp and humid conditions whenever possible. Got a tip? Talk to us! POCO sets a new benchmark for flagship performance in its category and a deeper collaboration with Qualcomm in the all new POCO F7, which is powered by the recently launched Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 Mobile Platform for faster, more efficient processing. Offering over 30% performance improvement over the previous generation, POCO F7 also features the brand's most advanced and effective cooling system yet, and a 6,500mAh battery which charges the battery to 80% in just 30 minutes, in addition to supporting reverse charging for devices across Xiaomi and other major smartphone brands. Image courtesy of POCO. On the gaming front, the POCO F7 offers WildBoost Optimisation 4.0 with support for 1.5K Super Resolution and Smart Frame Rate for up to 120FPS in Genshin Impact. Aesthetically, the POCO F7 Cyber Silver Edition makes a bold statement that is inspired by the Cyber aesthetic with its mechanical-style overlay and prominent Snapdragon logo above the division to embody the raw power driving the device. It is also designed to endure, with a reinforced structure that offers bending resistance rated up to 70kg to help reduce the impact from accidental pressure, as well as built to remain dependable across unpredictable environments with its IP68 dust and water resistant rating. Featuring a 6.83-inch 1.5K ultra-bright display, the POCO F7 is able to deliver flagship-level clarity, comfort and control with the ability to enhance brightness across a larger screen area for clear visibility even in harsh light, as well as enhance contrast in real time for vivid, accurate visuals using POCO's Sunlight Display 4.0. The display helps to reduce eye strain during extended sessions too, with the TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution) Certification, TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certification, and TÜV Rheinland Circadian Friendly Certification. Paired with 3,840Hz PWM dimming, Wet Touch Display 2.0, and an ultra-responsive 2,560Hz instant touch sampling rate, you will be able to adjust the screen seamlessly across different use scenarios such as navigating the display with damp fingers, or responding to fast-paced gaming. You can further elevate your shooting experience too, with features like UltraSnap and Live Photo. For portrait photography, POCO F7 offers you a versatile 26mm, 35mm, and 52mm focal lengths, that is paired with a real light spot feature to give your background a soft, beautiful blur. This $400 budget gaming phone runs the same chip as the Nothing Phone 3

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR POCO has launched the POCO F7 globally today. The new phone offers a powerful Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset and a 6,500mAh or 7,550mAh battery, depending on the region. Expect to pay a starting price of $399 or £389 for the POCO F7. The POCO F5 and POCO F6 were two of the best gaming phones on a budget as they offered powerful chips for the price. Now, the Xiaomi sub-brand is back with the POCO F7. The POCO F7 continues the trend of offering great performance for your buck, as it uses the brand-new Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor. This chipset offers an impressive CPU (1x Cortex-X4, 7x Cortex-A720) with no little cores. The chip also uses an Adreno GPU based on the Snapdragon 8 Elite's sliced architecture, albeit with two slices instead of the high-end chip's three slices. This processor theoretically means that the POCO F7 could offer performance that's roughly on par with last year's flagship phones. However, our own POCO F7 benchmark article reveals a sizable gap to Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones when it comes to peak CPU and GPU performance, but sustained performance is another matter altogether. In any event, I tried a few demanding games like Genshin Impact, GRID Legends, and War Thunder Mobile, and they all ran smoothly in extended play sessions. I also had enough headroom to turn up the graphics in GRID and War Thunder, and the device didn't get hot, either. So you should definitely keep this phone in mind if you're a mobile gamer on a budget. POCO's phone also has an impressively large 6,500mAh battery to keep the lights on. This means you should be able to game for a while compared to other handsets. This is a downgrade compared to the Chinese model (Redmi Turbo 4 Pro), which features a ridiculously large 7,550mAh battery, but a 6,500mAh battery is still plenty large in 2025. I'm also glad to see 90W wired charging here, with POCO claiming an 80% charge in 30 minutes. I reached the 80% mark in a slightly slower but still great 33 minutes. In fact, it only took 45 minutes for a 100% charge. Very impressive for a 6,500mAh battery. Hadlee Simons / Android Authority The POCO F7 isn't a photography champion by any measure. Expect a 50MP main camera (IMX882, OIS) and an 8MP ultrawide shooter. Meanwhile, a 20MP camera is available in a central punch-hole cutout for selfies. The cameras do a good job at 1x, but the ultrawide lens is a budget-tier camera that falls apart indoors and after sunset. The ultrawide camera also tends to differ wildly from the 1x camera in terms of image consistency. These cameras aren't going to threaten the likes of the Pixel 9a, then. However, I am glad to see features like 4K/60fps video capture and motion capture functionality. 1x Ultrawide Selfie 1x Ultrawide Otherwise, the new phone also offers a 6.83-inch 120Hz OLED screen (1.5K) that gets bright enough for outdoor viewing. As for the phone's durability, you can expect an aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass 7i on the front, a glass back covered in Panda Glass, and an IP68 rating. In fact, this might be the first standard POCO F series phone (i.e., not Pro) with full-fledged water resistance. The F7 is quite hefty at 217 grams, though, putting it on par with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. POCO is offering four years of major OS upgrades and six years of security patches. That's not on par with Samsung's six years of OS/security updates for the Galaxy A36 5G and seven years for the Pixel 9a, but it's still a respectable update policy. POCO F7 pricing and availability Hadlee Simons / Android Authority The POCO F7 starts at just $399/£389 for the base 12GB/256GB model, while the 16GB/512GB model costs $449/£429. This makes it slightly cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G (£399) and significantly cheaper than the Google Pixel 9a (£499). The company is also offering early bird promotional pricing, taking the phone down to a base price of $339 and £319. The phone will be available in various markets, including Europe, India, Latin America, the UK, and Southeast Asia. POCO is also offering the device in Black, White, and a special Silver option with a Snapdragon logo on the back. So you should definitely give this a look if you want a cheap, powerful, and long-lasting phone — if you don't care about the camera experience. Got a tip? Talk to us!
