History Today: Why July 23 is celebrated as National Broadcasting Day

It was on July 23, 1927, that the Indian Broadcasting Company was established, marking the beginning of organised and licensed radio broadcasting in the country. Now, every year, this day is celebrated as National Broadcasting Day in India, with various activities organised to acknowledge the historical and cultural significance of broadcasting, particularly radio read more India has a long history of radio and one of the most important days in the history of radio broadcasting is July 23, 1927, when the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) was launched in India. If you are a history geek who loves to learn about important events from the past, Firstpost Explainers' ongoing series, History Today, will be your one-stop destination to explore key events. The first African American woman to be crowned Miss America, Vanessa Williams, resigned from her title on this day in 1984. This came after unauthorised nude photographs of her were published by Penthouse magazine. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here is all that took place on this day across the world. Indian Broadcasting Company was officially established Did you know that the National Broadcasting Day is celebrated on July 23 every year? This is because it was on this day in 1927 that the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) was officially established in Bombay. The IBC was a private company, set up under a licence from the British colonial government. Its Bombay (now Mumbai) station began operations on July 23, while a second station in Calcutta (now Kolkata) followed soon after on August 26, 1927. The broadcasts included music, news, talks, and cultural programs aimed at engaging urban audiences who had access to radio sets which was a rare and expensive commodity back then. The IBS' launch led to a structured broadcast service aimed at informing and entertaining the public. Wikimedia Commons Though the initial response was positive, the IBC struggled financially. Low advertising revenue, limited reach, and operational costs made it difficult to sustain. In 1930, the company went into liquidation, and the government took over broadcasting operations. This transition led to the formation of the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS) on April 1, 1930. Eventually, in 1936, the ISBS was renamed All India Radio (AIR), which remains India's national public radio broadcaster today. The IBC's launch was a pivotal moment in Indian media history. It marked the transition from experimental and club-based amateur transmissions, like those by the Radio Club of Bombay in 1923, to a structured broadcast service aimed at informing and entertaining the public. Miss America resigned over nude photos One of the first instances of a Miss America resigning was Vanessa Williams, who let go of her title after unauthorised nude photographs of her were published by Penthouse magazine. Williams was the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America. The photos, taken before she won the crown in September 1983, were shot by photographer Tom Chiapel during a private modelling session. Williams had been told the images were artistic and would never be published. However, when Penthouse acquired and prepared to publish them without her consent, the resulting controversy shocked the nation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Under immense pressure from the Miss America Organisation, sponsors, and the public, Williams reluctantly stepped down just weeks before completing her reign. She was the first Miss America in history to resign. In a tearful press conference, she said, 'I never thought I would have to relinquish my title, but I can't give up who I am.' Vanessa Williams is being crowned as Miss America in 1984. File image/AP Her resignation was a devastating blow, not just to her personally, but also to many who saw her as a symbol of progress and a role model. Miss New Jersey, Suzette Charles, who was the first runner-up and also African American, assumed the Miss America crown for the remaining two months of the reign. Despite the highly public and humiliating scandal, Vanessa Williams remarkably rebuilt her career. She went on to achieve significant success as a Grammy-nominated singer and a critically acclaimed actress in television, film, and Broadway, proving her resilience and talent far beyond the beauty pageant stage. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This Day, That Year On this day in 1997, Slobodan Milosevic became president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1970, Sultan Said ibn Taymur of Oman was overthrown by his son, Qaboos bin Said, in a palace coup. Ford Motor Company sold its first automobile, a Ford Model A, on this day in 1903. Vanessa Williams misses her mother 'tremendously'

Vanessa Williams misses her late mother "tremendously". The 62-year-old star was left heartbroken when her mother Helen passed away aged 85 last December whilst on a trip to London to see her daughter perform in The Devil Wears Prada musical on the West End and explained that she was the figure who made the biggest impact on her life. Speaking to Stylist magazine, Vanessa said: "Not only did she make a huge impression on me, but she influenced so many of the people she taught as a school teacher. She was an absolute force and I miss her tremendously." The singer and actress had to resign as Miss America in 1984 after nude photos of her were published in Penthouse magazine and felt that the scandal gave her an "immediate jump" into adulthood. The Ugly Betty star said: "In 1984, aged 21, I resigned as Miss America. "I'm working on a documentary to explore every angle of it, but it was an immediate jump into becoming an adult." Meanwhile, Vanessa explained that she would be happy to relive the births of her children – Melanie, 38, Jillian, 36, and Devin, 32, from her marriage to Ramon Hervey, and Sasha, 25, from her relationship with second husband Rick Fox – as giving birth was the "best gift" of her life. Asked if she could experience one day in her life again, the Colors of the Wind singer said: "It's tough because every time I gave birth was the best gift I've ever had. "So I would say those four days – the opportunities to give life have been incredible." Vanessa says she is concerned about the current political climate in the US as "freedom and justice" are under threat. She explained: "I turn on the news and watch liberties being taken away from US citizens on a daily basis: it's scary." However, Williams is confident that the power of the "human spirit" can help the world overcome its current challenges. The Desperate Housewives star said: "Despite the chaos and tumult happening worldwide, it never stops the human spirit for peace, humanity, ease and community. That's what we have to remember: love is number one."

Days of Our Lives Recap: Philip and Xander Agree to Avoid Mutually Assured Destruction originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Days of Our Lives recap: Marlena and John's Penthouse: Marlena walks through her house alone. She says she can't be around anymore death. With that, she grabs flowers from a vase and throws them across the room. Marlena crosses to the cabinet and pulls out John's Yankee cap. She smells it and begins to cry. DiMera Mansion – Living Room: EJ opens a Happy Father's Day card from Sydney. Flashback: Johnny tells EJ he's dead to him. Later, he walks in and holds a gun on his father. Johnny and Chanel's Place: The couple are unpacking when he sees a wrapped gift. He thinks it's for his birthday, but Chanel says it was supposed to be his first Father's Day gift. He says they should keep the gift as someday she will have a reason to give it to him. Chanel pulls out Johnny's gold watch and says he is now all ready for his first day at Titan/DiMera. He wonders if she has time to grab a bite but she says she has to head to work. They kiss and he makes his exit. Chanel immediately makes a call to Felicity and says she won't be in to Sweet Bits until later in the day. EJ arrives and tells Johnny he is sorry about John. They talk a bit about John's legacy and how much EJ thinks he's like his grandfather. He also apologizes for trying to force his son to forgive him. EJ is there to set him free and promises, after tonight, they never have to see each other again. EJ takes Johnny by the shoulders and says he loves him with all his heart. Sometimes loving someone means letting them go. He asks his son if that's what he wants, and Johnny says he doesn't know. Johnny says he hates EJ for what he did to his mother. That being said, he can't deny he's been a good father. Johnny says he's always known he is important to his father and EJ says he would do anything for him. Johnny doesn't know if he can handle losing anyone else. EJ tells him to think everything over and promises to accept his decision. Salem PD – Jada's Office: Rafe arrives just after Jada hangs up with an irate Kate. She asks about FBI training, and he says he's great and ready to get back in the field. He'll be working through the Chicago office, so he'll be able to remain in Salem. Jada asks why he's there and he says he's learned some information about the shooting of EJ DiMera. Jada is surprised to learn Rafe planted a camera in EJ's living room. She asks why she's just now learning about it. EJ says the memory card was stolen and he has no clue how or when. Jada agrees to overlook the pesky B&E and get to work on locating the memory card. Jada and Rafe go through the possible suspects. She starts with Gabi and then they move to Leo, neither of which Rafe thinks are responsible. They effectively eliminate anyone in the Hernandez house and they shift their focus to the DiMera mansion. University Hospital – Philip's Room: Belle brings Philip a smoothie and wants to go over his statement. He says he already told Jada everything. She notes she is his friend and wants to help him get justice. Philip repeats he never saw his attacker. Belle can't understand why a stranger would attack him. She doesn't believe a single word he is saying. Philip is stunned to learn John died. He says Bo and Hope visited him before they left town. Philip freaks out because if he had made it to the drop with Kevin and his actions caused this entire mess. Belle says everything was an accident, but his assault was not. Philiip continues to stick to his story. Belle says she's going to find the truth and makes her exit. Belle reminds Philip she knows why Xander had motive to assault him. Philip gets it but says it wasn't Xander. Belle goes along with it saying maybe he hired someone to do it. She wonders if he said he would keep quiet about Philip's crimes if he remains silent about the assault. Belle implores him to tell the truth as she can't lose another person she loves. University Hospital – Exam Room: Xander tells Sarah the police have dropped all the charges against him. He is looking for an apology because she was dead wrong. Sarah says she's not apologizing as she still believes Xander beat Philip within an inch of his life. She notes he's never once denied being the culprit. Further, Philip would be getting himself in hot water by admitting the truth. Sarah tells Xander they won't be reuniting. He says it was never his intention to reunite. They both agree they can't trust each other. Xander says they need to revisit their custody agreement as he no longer has assault charges hanging over his head. He wants joint custody, but Sarah says she will never agree to that. Xander concludes they will have to do this the hard way and makes his exit. University Hospital – Lobby: Chanel runs into Paulina who is there for her yearly physical. Chanel congratulates her mother on her wedding anniversary. Paulina asks why Chanel is there. She says she is having a follow up appointment to her cancer surgery. Further, she wanted to ask Sarah if it was ok to start trying for a baby. Chanel didn't want to ask Johnny so as not to worry him. Paulina thinks she's making a mistake, but Chanel heads off to her appointment alone. Marlena and John's Penthouse: Belle arrives home and finds her mother in tears. The two embrace and Malena tells her about the baseball cap. Belle thinks she should work remotely the rest of the day, but Marlena wants her to go back to the office. Belle says nothing is more important than her. Marlena asks how Belle is doing, and they both admit the quiet moments are difficult for both of them. She asks about EJ and Belle says she's been having second thoughts about EJ who is allowing her space to work through her feelings. Belle wants to honor her father as she knows he wouldn't approve of their relationship. Marlena says Belle has to live her own life despite what she or John might think. Marlena tells Belle to head back to work. When they rise, she loses her balance. Belle wants to take her to the hospital, but Marlena says she's all good. With that, they embrace, and Belle exits. University Hospital – Philip's Room: Xander thanks Philip for making the right choice in keeping his name out of his statement. Philip said he didn't have much choice after what happened when he woke up. Flashback: Xander is about to put the pillow over Philip's face when he awakens. Xander says the police are going to come question him. Philip says Xander attacked him. Xander sets him straight saying he won't tell the police anything or he will lose his inheritance and stake in Titan/DiMera. University Hospital – Exam Room: Sarah tells Chanel her cancer screening is clear but wants her to wait to get pregnant. She doesn't want to risk a recurrence of the cancer right now. Chanel asks for a timeline and Sarah says it could be months or longer. Sarah knows her words are hard to swallow but says waiting will help ensure a healthy pregnancy. In real-time, Xander says they have to find a way to make their relationship work or they will both lose everything. Philip isn't certain they can possibly work together. Xander takes a seat and says how sorry he is for the assault. He was so furious and explains about the drug acquisition and Sarah's anaphylactic shock. All of it came together to lead him to something he deeply regrets. Philip senses Xander is sincere and apologizes for outing Sarah's part in the cover up. Xander says he's glad Philip told him but says Sarah doesn't know he's the one who exposed her. He says no one can ever know what happened in that hotel room. University Hospital – Lobby: Chanel tells Paulina about the positive bloodwork but then shares the disappointing news about not getting pregnant yet. They chat a bit more before Chanel makes a quick exit to get to work. Endings Marlena stumbles again on her way to the bedroom and lands on the arm of a chair. She looks at a picture of her and John before calling Sarah. Sarah examines Philip who says he's getting stronger by the day. She asks if he was the one who told Xander about her involvement in the cover up. Philip denies the truth and says how sorry he is to learn the truth was revealed. Xander runs into Paulina and says he is planning to contest the decision of the hospital board. He wants to know if he can count on Abe's support. Paulina tells him to focus on what's important, his wife and daughter. Johnny calls in saying he's going to be late. Just then, Chanel returns. He explains what happened with his father. Chanel is thrilled to hear EJ is willing to get gone but Johnny informs her that he's not so sure he wants to completely divorce himself. Chanel is none too thrilled with this turn of events. Rafe and Jada agree someone took the memory card before he snatched it back after the shooting. They admit there are dozens of suspects but are glad to be on the right track. Jada hopes working together in this way means someday they might be friends. EJ is playing chess when Belle arrives and tells him that she needs to follow her heart. She declares her love for him, and he returns the sentiment. With that, they kiss. Keep checking back for the latest Days of Our Lives recaps! Check out Manitoba's twin cities: Winkler and Morden

'Why would you go to Morden and Winkler for the weekend?' Travel writer Shel Zolkewich is exploring interesting destinations in Manitoba and beyond this summer. Some are annual favourites and others are a little off the beaten path. Come along for the ride! It's a question I used to get asked a lot. But after a few stays, and even more shares on social media, the questions have become, 'Where can we stay if we go there?' and 'What should we do there?' The twin cities of Morden and Winkler are 12 kilometres apart on Provincial Highway 3. That means visitors get two for the price of one when it comes to family fun, fabulous food and superb shopping in southwestern Manitoba. Your micro-vacation starts here with our Top 10. 1. Stay in a castle. It rests on Morden's main thoroughfare, elegantly holding its place from another time. Built in 1902, Bella's Castle is impossible to miss with its wraparound porch, impressive stonework and, at night, a gallery of twinkling lights. Take your pick from one of five suites, including The Penthouse, which includes a fireplace and claw-foot tub. Built in 1902, Bella's Castle in Morden is impossible to miss with its wraparound porch and impressive stonework. It's also taken a turn on the small screen. (Travel Manitoba photo) 2. Eat corn! The farmers around Morden really do grow the most delicious corn in the land. And it's free to all at the Morden Corn and Apple Festival each August. I was mesmerized by the massive corn cooker that's powered by an antique steam engine. Incredibly, it churns out 50,000 cobs during the event. Cooking 50,000 cobs of free corn for people at Morden's Corn and Apple Festival in August is a team effort. (Shel Zolkewich photo) 3. Make it Mexican. My suitcase is bulging with grocery store finds on every return flight from Mexico. But I've found a much more convenient place to get all my favourites: Sunny Day Products and El Roi Mexican Imports, both in Winkler, stock sweet soda pop, Mexican oregano, achiote paste and all the other treats that make me feel like I've stepped into a Mexican market. 4. Meet Bruce. Even if it's been a few years since you got excited about dinosaurs, the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre in Morden is a must. It's home to Bruce and he demands attention as the world's largest publicly displayed mosasaur. I loved pretending I was Indiana Jones during the Fossil Dig Adventure Tour, where we learned real paleontological field techniques. Check it out this summer. 5. Shop. Shop. Shop. I always stock up on Mint Medley shea hand cream (for these gardening hands) at Pure Anada, a made in Morden success story featuring cosmetics crafted from organic botanicals and mineral pigments. The downtown shop is simply a joy for browsing. 6. Spa day! The newly opened Healthians Wellness World in Morden includes a variety of saunas, a steam room and massage therapy at the touch of a button in zero-gravity chairs. Or head over to the Avalon Day Spa in Winkler for a seaweed wrap or therapeutic massage. 7. Hit the beach! Admittedly, I stayed in the shallows, but the Splish Splash Waterpark at Colert Beach inside the Lake Minnewasta Recreation Area in Morden truly looked like a blast. I saw youngsters get launched from a giant pillow, race down a puffy slide and fly high on a trampoline — all over the water on this inflatable playground. Winkler's Bethel Heritage Park is a downtown treasure featuring a fountain, overflowing garden beds and a pavilion that hosts live theatre and concerts.(Travel Manitoba photo) 8. More than potatoes. I get endless teasing when I say The Potato Store in Winkler is my favourite stop. Yes, it's the place for bulk spuds at the best prices, but the newly expanded space also stocks a huge selection of made in Manitoba wares including honey, jams and chocolates and a dreamy gift section, not to mention The Crusty Bun for pastries and excellent coffees. The Potato Store in Winkler has plenty of made-in-Manitoba favourites. (Shel Zolkewich photo) 9. Dinner is served. Step into historic charm at Rendezvous Eatery & Taproom in Morden, once the town's newspaper office and now the home of mouth-watering barbecue on the weekends, tacos and margaritas on Thursdays and Underwood IPA, just one of the brews offered here. 10. Ice cream for the road. Making a decision at the take-out window is the most difficult part of a visit to Charley B's in Winkler. But you'll never go wrong with the Checker Split, my fave because it includes a sprinkle of brownies on top. The busy joint also has a Pawsh Picnic menu just for the doggos. BONUS: Stop by Morden Nurseries for your very own apple u-pick adventure in their orchard in late summer. Visit Morden Nurseries & Garden Centre and take home a bag of u-pick apples. BONUS: Are you a fan of Hallmark movies? Then you're sure to recognize Bella's Castle in her starring role in Pumpkin Everything (2022).
