Former Little League star and Philadelphia native Mo'ne Davis to try out for new women's pro baseball league
Mo'ne Davis is not done playing baseball. The former Little League phenom who at 13 became the first girl to pitch a victory — and a shutout — in the Little League World Series, will be one of more than 600 players to try out for the Women's Professional Baseball League set to launch next year, the league said. Davis, a Philadelphia native, will join other women's baseball stars like Kelsie Whitmore, the first woman to sign a professional contract with an MLB-partnered league, at the tryouts, which will be held in Washington, D.C., from Aug. 22-25. Davis will try out as a pitcher, as well as at second base, shortstop and center field, per the league. Her decision was first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. The WPBL is aiming to launch in the summer of 2026 with six teams and would be the first U.S. pro league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League — depicted in the classic film "A League of Their Own" — dissolved in 1954. Next month's tryouts will determine the 150 players who will be selected for the league's inaugural draft in October. Davis' rise to stardom came swiftly in 2014 when she delivered 70 mph fastballs for Philadelphia's Taney Youth Baseball Association during that year's Little League World Series. She became an instant inspiration for fans young and old. She appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, has her jersey displayed in baseball's Hall of Fame and was named Sports Kid of the Year by Sports Illustrated Kids. Davis graduated from Hampton University in 2023 and has provided commentary on ESPN for Little League games.

Philadelphia Eagles Unveil Unreal Super Bowl LIX Rings That Include Wings
The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled their Super Bowl LIX rings at the team's ring ceremony on Friday night — and they're sharp and large, to say the least. On the top of the ring is Philadelphia's logo with a pair of Super Bowl trophies, representing the franchise's two Super Bowl triumphs: Super Bowl LII (2017 NFL season) and Super Bowl LIX (2024 NFL season). One side of the ring has a player's individual number and last name on top of Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia's home stadium, with their respective signatures also included. Another side of the ring lists the scores of each of the Eagles' four playoff wins. Meanwhile, the ring has wings, with "YOU CAN'T BE GREAT WITHOUT" engraved on the left wing and "THE GREATNESS OF OTHERS" engraved on the right wing. Philadelphia defeated the Green Bay Packers (22-10), Los Angeles Rams (28-22) and NFC East-rival Washington Commanders (55-23) before taking down the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX (40-22), which came two years after the Chiefs beat the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Quarterback and two-time Pro Bowler Jalen Hurts was the MVP of Super Bowl LIX. Elsewhere, superstar running back Saquon Barkley, who spent the first six years of his career with the NFC East-rival New York Giants, rushed for an NFL-high 2,005 yards on a career-high 5.8 yards per carry in the regular season, becoming the ninth player in NFL history to post 2,000 rushing yards in a single season. Barkley then set the NFL record for combined rushing yards in a single season (regular season plus postseason), finishing with 2,504 yards on the ground. On the other side of the ball, linebacker Zack Baun totaled 151 combined tackles and five forced fumbles, while fellow linebacker Nakobe Dean totaled 128 combined tackles. Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson had a team-high six interceptions, while rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean had a pick-six in Super Bowl LIX. In total, the Eagles were seventh in the NFL with 27.2 points and eighth with 367.2 total yards per game. Defensively, they were first with 278.4 total yards surrendered and second with 17.8 points surrendered per game. Philadelphia had six players earn Pro Bowl honors: Barkley, Baun, defensive tackle Jalen Carter, guard Landon Dickerson, offensive tackle Lane Johnson and center Cam Jurgens. Suspect sought after 16-year-old shot in Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood
Philadelphia police are searching for a gunman after a 16-year-old boy was shot multiple times in the city's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood late Friday night. Investigators received a report of a person with a gun on the 2400 block of North 33rd Street at around 11:30 p.m. Friday, police said. Officers discovered the teenager had been shot in the left shoulder and left leg and brought him to Temple University Hospital, where police said he was stable. Investigators recovered five 9mm spent casings from the scene. Police provided limited information on a potential suspect, but said the gunman is a male and was last seen wearing a black hoodie. No arrests have been made in the investigation. The Shooting Investigation Group will oversee the case.

Fly, Eagles fly: Super Bowl rings feature pop-out wings
July 19 - The Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl LIX championship rings include a hidden button that extends a pair of wings when pressed. The Eagles received their diamond-draped jewelry in a team ceremony on Friday night honoring their 40-22 win against the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 9 in New Orleans. "Our Super Bowl LIX Championship Ring represents the commitment, determination, and sacrifice of every member of our organization who helped deliver another World Championship for Eagles fans everywhere," Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement. "From the start of training camp to our celebration on Broad Street, this team was deeply connected on every level. Our players, coaches, and front office staff all worked so tirelessly throughout the season to raise another Lombardi Trophy." In addition to the unique wings feature, the rings include two sayings from head coach Nick Sirianni: "You can't be great without the greatness of others," and the mantra "Tough. Detailed. Together." Forty points of diamonds spell out "World Champions," reflecting the number of points Philadelphia put on the scoreboard to win its second Super Bowl championship. The five diamonds on the special feature button represent the five Eagles players who scored against the Chiefs: Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Cooper DeJean and Jake Elliott. Scores from all of Philadelphia's playoff wins are inscribed inside the ring along with the number 145, representing the record total of postseason points the Eagles tallied. --Field Level Media
