Iraq's Basra governorate awards mega desalination project to Sino-Iraqi consortium
Iraq's Basra Governorate has awarded a major seawater desalination project to a consortium comprising Iraq's Al-Rida Group and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) Mobilisation for the 1 million cubic metres per day (m3/day) project, which will use reverse osmosis technology, has started, a statement issued by the Basra governor's office said. The project scope also includes a dedicated power station to secure uninterrupted electricity for operations, and a 240-kilometre water transmission network connecting to nine main distribution centres across the governorate. The statement didn't disclose project costs or timelines. PowerChina has delivered over seven desalination projects in the region, including the 900,000 m³/day Taweelah plant in Abu Dhabi, the world's largest reverse osmosis facility, and the Rabigh 3 and Jubail plants in Saudi Arabia (600,000 m³/day each). Water crisis relief: Basra inks deal for desalination project
Shafaq News - Basra On Friday, Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani announced the awarding of a seawater desalination project with a daily capacity of one million cubic meters to a coalition of Al-Ridha Group and China's PowerChina, experts in regional water infrastructure. In a statement, the governor explained that the strategic project includes three main components: an advanced reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant, a dedicated power station to supply the necessary energy, and 240 kilometers of pipelines to transport water to nine key distribution points across the province. 'The goal is to secure a sustainable and high-quality water supply for the people of Basra,' Al-Eidani noted, stressing that 'This project represents one of the most important infrastructure investments in the province's recent history.' The selected Chinese company, El-Eidani added, brings extensive experience in water infrastructure, with more than seven completed projects across the region. These include the Al-Tawila plant in Abu Dhabi—the world's largest reverse osmosis facility with a capacity of 900,000 cubic meters per day—as well as the third phase of the Rabigh project and the Jubail plant in Saudi Arabia, each with a capacity of 600,000 cubic meters per day. 'We chose a partner with a proven track record at this scale,' he noted, highlighting the technical weight behind the selection. This project comes amid Basra continues to face a drinking water crisis compounded by rising pollution levels in both water and air. Since early this year, protests have erupted, especially in northern areas, in response to water scarcity and an increase in respiratory and skin diseases linked to pollution. Additionally, the intrusion of saline seawater into the Shatt al-Arab river has worsened the shortage of potable water and affected agricultural irrigation, further straining the province's already fragile water resources.

Ecuador, Power China agree on process to drop hydroelectric plant arbitration
QUITO (Reuters) -Ecuador's government has struck a deal with Power China on a process to drop arbitration over the South American country's largest hydroelectric plant, Coca Codo Sinclair, Energy Minister Ines Manzano told a press conference on Wednesday "This is an agreement between the parties that we are going to leave the arbitration," Manzano said. "The parties that were in the arbitration have reached an agreement. We are making firm progress." Manzano added that three steps must still be taken before the arbitration is ended, without giving further details. Ecuador's power company CELEC in 2021 requested the arbitration through the International Chamber of Commerce to settle a dispute over cracks in the 1,500-megawatt plant's machinery that prevented it from operating at full capacity. The plant was built by China's Sinohydro Corp in 2016, a hydropower contracting unit of state-owned Power China, but since coming online it has faced repeated technical issues, despite covering some 30% of Ecuador's electricity demand. Zambia launches 100 megawatt solar plant supplying First Quantum Minerals
LUSAKA, June 30 (Reuters) - Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema on Monday opened the country's biggest grid-connected solar power plant, built by PowerChina, which will supply electricity to copper miner First Quantum Minerals ( opens new tab. The 100 megawatt Chisamba project is expected to reduce the Southern African country's reliance on electricity imports from neighbours South Africa and Mozambique. It will free up capacity for Zambian consumers that would have otherwise been used by First Quantum Minerals. Zambia depends on hydropower for the bulk of its electricity generation needs, and low water levels because of a severe drought have forced state utility Zesco to ration electricity. Hichilema said at a launch event that the drought highlighted the need to urgently diversify the power mix. There are plans to add another 100 MW of capacity at the Chisamba site, although a timeframe for the expansion has not been laid out.
