Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary trailer breaks record in first week after fans were stunned by his appearance
Ryan Gosling's upcoming sci-fi adventure film Project Hail Mary could have box office success in its future after its first trailer broke records online. The trailer scored an eye-popping 400 million views globally in just its first week online, according to WaveMetrix, via Deadline. The trailer's success may have been partly due to the interest in Gosling's appearance, as the 44-year-old actor looked unrecognizable in portions of the video due to his wild, unkempt beard and long, scraggly hair. According to WaveMetrix, the Project Hail Mary trailer's 400 million views represent the most ever for an original film that is not a sequel or a remake. Although WaveMetrix's figure would suggest the Project Hail Mary was a massive online success, it's unclear how views were counted for its purposes. YouTube, where the trailer was posted, requires users to have clicked on a video and to watch at least 30 seconds in total to register toward its view count. The trailer was also a milestone for Amazon MGM Studios, as it had the biggest launch ever for the studio, as well for its pre-merger entities MGM and Amazon Studios. The film is directed by the team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are best known for writing and directing 21 Jump Street (2012) and The Lego Movie (2014). The filmmakers both celebrated their upcoming film's hit trailer on X (formerly Twitter), and they announced that they would be joining Gosling, Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir and the film's screenwriter Drew Goddard for a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Gosling plays the bookish school teacher–turned–astronaut Ryland Grace in the forthcoming science-fiction film, which is adapted from Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. He looks completely different in a long haired wig and long, scruffy beard. Fans of this actor may be able to suss out his identity due to his soulful blue eyes, which give away his true identity no matter how different he looks from his everyday style. In the trailer, Ryan wakes up in this disheveled state, confused and wondering where he is. He has no memory of his past or how he ended up on the spaceship. His character states that he just woke up from a coma in outer space and is 'several light-years' away from his apartment. 'I'm not an astronaut,' he declares multiple times, as the trailer reveals the event leading up to him going to space. Ryland is a middle school teacher with a PhD in molecular biology. But his life is turned upside down when he is recruited by a space force to figure out why the stars, including the sun, are dying out. As the trailer goes on it is revealed the stars were infected with something deadly and it is Ryland's job to find out why. Ryland's mission to space is a 'Hail Mary,' last ditch effort to stop the stars from dying and save all life forms. He expresses hesitancy at being tasked to save all life, saying, 'I understand the stakes, I do. But my place is in the classroom.' He did not want to go to space but when he was told he'd die along with everyone else, he changed his mind. At the end of the trailer, Ryland declares that he's met an alien and he tries to teach it Hacky Sack and how to do a thumbs-up. It is revealed that the alien has been tasked with the same job as Ryland. He needs to figure out how to save his species. The trailer features Harry Styles' Sign of the Times as it follows Ryland's attempts to save, essentially, the universe. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and hits theaters on March 20, 2026. The first footage of the film debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Sandra Hüller's character ominously says, 'The sun is not the only star dying. If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct.' At CinemaCon, Gosling took a playful swipe at his directors, saying of Lord and Miller, 'They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.' 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon, per Variety. After waking up on his journey in a bedraggled stage, Ryland shaves his tangled beard off and breaks down in tears at the enormity of the mission he's been tasked with. He continued: 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' Project Hail Mary also features Sandra Hüller, known for 2023's Oscar-winning foreign-language films The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall, as well as the 2016 comedy Toni Erdmann. who is best known as the director of The Cabin In the Woods and the screenwriter of hits including Coverfield, World War Z and The Martian, which may have helped prepare him for the sci-fi stylings of Project Hail Mary.

Ryan Gosling in Space: All About ‘Project Hail Mary,' Sci-Fi Adaptation
If you've ever been on BookTok (book TikTok), then you've probably heard of the wildly popular science fiction book Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Currently, it has over 800,000 ratings on Goodreads and even won the app's highly coveted Readers' Favorite Science Fiction Award back in 2021. Given all this success, it makes total sense that it's being turned into a movie, starring none other than Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling as astronaut Ryland Grace. But what exactly is it going to be about? And when will the Project Hail Mary movie be released? We have all of that must-know information and more below. Project Hail Mary was originally published in May 2021 by Ballantine Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. It follows an astronaut named Ryland Grace, who is the sole survivor of a desperate mission to stop humanity and Earth from perishing. The only problem? One day, he wakes up and doesn't know who he is or what his mission is. Desperate to figure it out, Ryland soon embarks on a mission to figure out what happened and how it could help him save everyone and everything. 'Ryland Grace, it's not a story of him trying to survive. It's much more about finding a way to solve this problem that has afflicted our sun,' Weir, the author of both Project Hail Mary and The Martian, turned into a movie in 2015 starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, told Penguin Random House. 'I am very aware of the similarities between The Martian and Project Hail Mary. We have an isolated scientist far from Earth, doing a lot of problem solving, but I didn't want to have a re-run of any of the stuff from The Martian, so the problems that Ryland faces are completely different." 'For instance, he's got plenty of food. He's fine on the food and, with a few very minor exceptions, his ship works correctly. All of his equipment works, never breaks down and does what it's supposed to, because unlike Mark, who is stranded on Mars using equipment that's supposed to last for 30 days and has to live there for two years, Grace is on a ship that was made for this purpose.' Shortly after the book was released, it was announced that Project Hail Mary would be turned into a movie by MGM studios with Gosling (The Notebook and Barbie) set to take on the role of Ryland. The film will also star Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann and Anatomy of a Fall). It will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who previously collaborated as filmmakers on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and written by Drew Goddard, who also wrote the screenplay for The Martian in 2015. Weir is expected to work on the film as a producer. 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon, per Variety. 'This is why we go to the movies, and I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' When The Sun Dies: What It Means For Earth
The Sun provides light and warmth, as well as conditions necessary for the existence of life on the planet Earth. But it will not live forever. Scientists have previously said that the Sun will begin to die in about 5 billion years when it runs out of hydrogen, after that it will expand into a red giant and potentially engulf the inner planets, including Earth, reported. Here's What Would Happen If The Sun Dies The process of the Sun's transformation into a red giant would bring extreme heat to the outer planets, which would make them habitable. However, this phase would last only a few hundred million years. Meanwhile, Earth's surface temperature would rise. Oceans and other water bodies would evaporate, making the planet uninhabitable. The increased heat would also cause atmospheric gases to escape into space. The red giant phase of the Sun would last around 1 billion years. After this phase, the Sun will shed its outer layers, forming a planetary nebula, and leaving behind a white dwarf. Such changes would make it difficult for life as we know it to survive on Earth. The increased heat and radiation would likely lead to the extinction of most life forms. The Sun's death would also be the end of our solar system, the way we know it. The eventual death of the Sun might prompt humanity to search for new homes in other star systems if technology allows. What Is "Project Hail Mary"? An upcoming Hollywood movie also revolves around the same idea. Ryan Gosling starter "Project Hail Mary" is an upcoming sci-fi film based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. The story follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher turned astronaut, who wakes up on a spaceship called the Hail Mary with no memory of his mission. His goal is to save humanity from extinction as the Sun and other stars are dying due to a mysterious force. The film is set to release in March 2026.
