Motorist accused of killing teen in Germiston granted bail

JOHANNESBURG -The woman accused of driving through a crowd during a coming of age ceremony in Germiston, killing a teenager has been granted R5,000 bail for a second time. 68-year-old Martha van der Walt appeared in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Friday on a charge of culpable homicide. Last month, 13-year-old Pretty Mahlangu was killed when a car ploughed through a group of teenagers attending a traditional ceremony called umhlonyane. Shortly after the incident, Van der Walt handed herself over to police where she was released on R5,000 station bail. "Because of the schedule, she is not required to place efficient facts to show in terms of schedule 5 or 6, which is a little bit more of an onerous task. We just need to see if it's in the interest of justice that she be released." The Mahlangu family has accused officers at the Germiston police station of giving Van der Walt preferential treatment.

‘I want to stand trial to clear my name': Tiffany Meek denies killing her son

The Fleurhof mother of murdered pre-teen Jayden-Lee Meek has asked to be freed on bail ahead of trial after her arrest a week ago in connection with his death. 'I did not kill my child. I will attend every court appearance. I want to stand trial to clear my name,' Tiffany Nicole Meek said in a statement read out by her lawyer in the Roodepoort magistrate's court. The 31-year-old disclosed Jayden-Lee was her second child. She lost a newborn two days after birth when she was 18. Estranged from her husband, Meek said she had been a single mom to Jayden-Lee and was financially supporting her mother and brother. She earns R17,500 a month from a clerical job which she started in October 2023 and has since been promoted. This was verified via an employer's letter submitted to court. Meek said she intends to relocate to her father's home in KwaZulu-Natal if released on bail, where she envisaged receiving the support of her extended family. She said she could afford to pay a bail amount of R5,000.

Brazen armed robbers hit traffic department, police seek community help

Armed robbers attacked security guards at the Mhala traffic department and broke into a safe, stealing an undisclosed amount of money. Image: File Police at Mhala in Mpumalanga are requesting community members' assistance with information that could lead to arrests of suspects who allegedly broke into the Mhala traffic department and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. The incident took place on Wednesday, at around midnight. 'It is reported that three security officers were on duty at the said department patrolling the premises when they were attacked by six African males who were armed with firearms - pistols and a rifle,' said provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane. The intruders allegedly pointed the security officers with firearms and forced them into one of the offices. 'They forcefully opened two burglar doors of the main entrance of the offices and broke all the burglar doors, which led to a room where there was a safe. It is further reported that the suspects damaged the safe and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene,' said Ndubane. 'Police urge anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Detective Sergeant Collen Nyalungu on 076 936 7222. Alternatively, members of the public can anonymously call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPSApp.' Police have pledged that all received information will be treated as confidential, and callers may opt to remain anonymous. In September 2022, IOL reported that armed assailants attacked police officers at Grootvlei police station in Mpumalanga and forcefully took three 9mm pistols, one R5 rifle and one shotgun, as well as about 180 bullets. At the time, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the assailants took one pistol from a police officer, and the other firearms were seized from the safe of the police station. 'According to the report, two suspects arrived at the police station on Friday evening, 02 September 2022 around 6pm, claiming to be from Soshanguve under the pretence of reporting a domestic violence incident,' said Mohlala. 'They played victims as if they needed help from the two members who were working at the community service centre (CSC) regarding a female who was a 'victim' of domestic violence. The CSC's safety door was locked at that point and they initially left and only to return later around 10pm where they complained that their concern was being disregarded by the members.' During this second visit, the group insisted that the door should be opened for them. 'The members [police officers] opened the door to obtain more information. As soon as they let them in, two suspects drew firearms and disarmed the two police officials,' said Mohlala. [email protected] IOL News

Uber partners with Lucid, Nuro in $300m robotaxi investment

Uber will invest $300m (R5,339,670,000) in electric vehicle maker Lucid in a robotaxi deal that aims to start with one major US city late next year, the companies said on Thursday. Over six years starting in 2026, Uber will acquire and deploy more than 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs that will be equipped with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology from startup Nuro, the three companies said in a statement. The agreement illustrates the renewed plans and push for financing for self-driving cabs years after a first wave of autonomous driving investment produced only a limited number of vehicles. Tesla has recently launched a robotaxi trial in Austin and Alphabet's driverless taxi unit Waymo is speeding up its expansion. As part of their announced deal, Uber will invest hundreds of millions in Lucid and Nuro, which supplies self-driving technology to carmakers, the joint statement said. Of that, $300m will go to Lucid, the EV maker said in a separate filing to the US securities and exchange commission on Thursday. Lucid shares surged more than 26% to $2.95 (R52.50). They have fallen about 24% this year. Uber's latest move underscores its renewed push into the robotaxi space after exiting in 2020. Since then, Uber has pivoted to partnerships with several technology developers, including Waymo and Aurora. The deal with Lucid follows Uber's robotaxi agreement in April with Volkswagen that will supply its vans for commercial service planned for Los Angeles next year. Commercialisng AV tech has been much harder than anticipated with high costs, tight regulations and federal investigations forcing many, including General Motors' Cruise, to shut down. Some in the race include Zoox, which is testing a robotaxi without manual controls and plans to launch commercial services in Las Vegas this year. After years of missed promises, Tesla started a restricted trial with about a dozen of its Model Y SUVs in Austin, Texas, last month. CEO Elon Musk has said it will expand the service rapidly to other US cities this year. Waymo has been growing cautiously for years and operates in several US cities with about 1,500 vehicles. It crossed 160-million kilometres of autonomous driving this month. A prototype of the Lucid-Nuro robotaxi is operating autonomously on a closed circuit at Nuro's testing facility in Las Vegas, the companies said. "We are expanding beyond our traditional EV technology leadership and working on partnerships and going into areas that in the past we have not focused on," Lucid's interim CEO Marc Winterhoff told Reuters. Nuro, co-founded and led by former Waymo engineers, has expanded from making last-mile delivery vehicles to providing its self-driving technology for commercial and passenger vehicles. "We have other very active conversations going on the personal vehicle side, where we would integrate Nuro driver into vehicles that will be sold to end consumers," said Dave Ferguson, Nuro's co-founder and president. Nuro will need to apply for state level operating licences though it holds some licences from their previous delivery operations, he said. Separately, Lucid said it had proposed a one-for-10 reverse stock split of its class A common stock.
