New Switch 2 game leaks early as Nintendo Direct looks inevitable

Nintendo's much rumoured next Direct looks increasingly likely, as a Switch 2 game's announcement is posted early by accident. Several reliable sources have claimed a Nintendo Direct is planned before the end of July, and with only one day left, there's a nervous air hanging over every post from Nintendo. The company recently announced the return of Mario Paint with mouse controls and released a new eight minute trailer for its 3v3 wheelchair basketball game Drag X Drive, which will receive a free online playtest on August 9 and 10, ahead of its launch on August 14. With the Direct rumour hanging over proceedings, some believe Nintendo is rolling out these announcements now because they aren't big enough for the presentation (or, in the case of Drag X Drive, are too long to cover) – something which has been a pattern in the past. Beyond these announcements though, developer Nippon Ichi Software has really let the cat out of the bag. In a now deleted tweet (via ResetEra), the Disgaea studio announced a new rural life sim set for release on July 30, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game's name seems to translate to something like The Garden Of Honolulu and is by the same team behind underappreciated survival horror series Yomawari. While it's unclear if the announcement is tied to a potential Direct, or if someone at the studio simply had a mishap with the social scheduling, the fact it is coming out on the Switch 2 suggests it could be lined up for the presentation. There are other Nintendo-related rumours percolating in the ether too. Composer Manami Kiyota, who is best known for working on the music in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, posted a tweet saying she's working on a 'new project' which some have taken as a hint to a new game. I'm working on a new project together with wonderful creators from around the world. Please look forward to the official announcement!世界の素晴らしいクリエイターたちと一緒に、新しいプロジェクトに取り組んでいます😊本日のセッション無事に終了しました! — 清田愛未 Manami Kiyota (@manamikiyota) July 28, 2025 'I'm working on a new project together with wonderful creators from around the world,' Kiyota posted on X. 'Please look forward to the official announcement!' Shortly afterwards, an insider on Chinese social media site Weibo posted artwork from Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with the caption: 'This goodbye is not the end' – a lyric used in the game's ending theme titled Where We Belong. However, there are some caveats to the latter. The day it was posted, July 29, was the same day as the third anniversary of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, so it's possible this was simply a celebratory post to mark the occasion. By that same logic though, if a Direct does happen this week, it's possible Nintendo is planning to celebrate its third anniversary in some fashion – possibly with an upgraded Switch 2 edition in the vein of Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby And The Forgotten Land. More Trending The co-director behind Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has already said any sequel will be 'vastly different' to previous entries, so a successor feels inevitable, but considering the third game's DLC only came out two years ago, a brand new Xenoblade title might be a bit premature at this point. For comparison, there was a five-year gap between Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Even without a Xenoblade announcement, there's still a lot of evidence for a Nintendo Direct. Along with the above, a retailer in Malaysia (via Nintendo Patents Watch) has reportedly outed vague details on the recently announced Splatoon spin-off Splatoon Raiders, claiming it will launch in 2025. While it's best to take this with a pinch of salt, it's possible Splatoon Raiders could turn out to be Nintendo's big Christmas game outside of Pokémon Legends: Z-A – even if it is a lot more popular in Japan than the rest of the world. However, the original trailer for Splatoon Raiders didn't mention any 2025 window, implying it wouldn't be released this year. Either way, we shouldn't have long to wait, as an announcement for the Nintendo Direct (if it is actually happening) is expected later today. Although even if it doesn't happen a Direct within the next couple of weeks still seems likely. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Domino's pizza joins fans demanding Final Fantasy 9 anniversary remake

Square Enix is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9, but many fans aren't satisfied with the announcements. A remake of Final Fantasy 9 has been rumoured ever since the Nvidia leak in 2021, but it's still unclear whether the project is actually in development. Many fans held out hope for the role-player's 25th anniversary, which is today, as the perfect time for Square Enix to announce its existence. However, while the developer has marked the occasion with some fanfare, there's no sign of a remake. In a blog post for the anniversary, Square Enix revealed new pieces of artwork by character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, along with a short tribute video, but no remake. To further mark the occasion, Final Fantasy 9 is 70% off across Steam and the Nintendo eShop, at £4.79 and £5.09, respectively. An anniversary vinyl is also available to pre-order, featuring a mix of original tracks and newly recorded versions, along with a picture book centred around mage character Vivi Ornitier. If you take a peek below the announcement post however, the comments are littered with disgruntled fans clamouring for a remake. 'Can we all celebrate together with a remake?' wrote one commenter on X. Another added: 'Anything else you'd like to do to celebrate?' Over on Facebook, even the official account for Domino's Pizza has joined in the cries. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. As to whether a remake is actually still in development, reliable insider NateTheHate recently claimed that it might've been cancelled, although he said he still needed to 'verify' the information. 'As of last check it remains in development, to my knowledge,' he wrote on ResetEra. 'But I need to do a fresh check and see what a more current status is – as I did hear a month or so ago that it was in trouble and possibly cancelled. I only had one source on the cancellation possibility and need to verify the info further.' It's never been clear if the original Nvidia leak was referring to a 'remake' on the scale of Final Fantasy 7 Remake or something closer to a remaster, but if it has been cancelled, that might suggest it was somewhat substantial. More Trending Last year, Square Enix announced it would be more 'selective' with its game projects moving forward. after cancelling several unannounced titles – so it's possible a Final Fantasy 9 remake was caught in the firing line. As for other games in the series, Square Enix is currently working on the follow-up to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Earlier this year, the studio announced it had finished writing the plot for the closing chapter of the trilogy, but no release date has been announced. The first game in the remake trilogy will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S later this year, although neither version has a release date yet. PS5/PS5 Pro Reportedly Getting New Mode That Has Fans Excited

The and are reportedly getting a new developer mode that signals a major development, according to insiders. A known Sony leaker has gotten hold of documents which suggest that the company is rolling out a 'low power mode' for both consoles, enabling which would draw less power and lower energy consumption while running games. The leak comes from none other than YouTuber Moore's Law Is Dead (MLID), who was the first insider to leak the PS5 Pro and internal Sony documents with its specs, prompting an official copyright strike. Now, MLID claims that they have similar documents with information about the said low power developer mode. Without going into too much technical jargon, it seems that this mode will run games with reduced specs. MLID is convinced that this mode is designed for games to run on the rumored new PlayStation handheld. Here's what the low power mode will reportedly do (thanks, ResetEra): Limit CPU to 8 threads Reduces GPU clocks by ~15% Cut GDDR 6 bandwidth in half Reduce 3D Audio Processing performance by 75% Limits PS5 Pro to 36 Compute Units No PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) or VR support The idea here is that targeting this mode mode will ensure that there is a version of each game that runs on the upcoming handheld as well. Another known leaker, Kepler_L2, agrees with MLID's theory. 'This is 100% an emulated performance profile for the handheld since the biggest weakness of that APU is memory bandwidth, and this profile is reducing PS5 bandwidth,' they tweeted. Fingers crossed for a new PlayStation handheld! The post PS5/PS5 Pro Reportedly Getting New Mode That Has Fans Excited appeared first on PlayStation LifeStyle.

No PlayStation showcase this summer suggest insiders as Sony waits till autumn

Sony is not thought to be planning any showcase or State of Play event this summer, as insiders tease big Japanese game reveals for Geoff Keighley's show. Over the past five years, Sony has held either a State Of Play presentation or a PlayStation Showcase during the months of May or June. This in turn is the continuation of a decades long tradition of preview events originally timed to coincide with the now defunct E3 expo. Along with Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony has always kept to the same basic schedule (although recently they've preferred late May to early June), while third party publishers have relied on Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. The Xbox showcase is already scheduled for June 8 but given the Switch 2 launch in the same week it's unclear what Nintendo will do. Sony has said nothing so far about an event but multiple insiders suggest that they may not have any presentation until September. Earlier this week, reliable insider NateTheHate, aka NateDrake, (who, amongst other things, accurately predicted the Switch 2 reveal date) has said he still hasn't 'heard anything about a May event from Sony for this year'. This was supported by fellow insider John Harker, who responded to a post in the same ResetEra thread, which speculated Sony was targeting September for its next event. 'Indeed,' he wrote in response. While there's a chance Sony could announce a show over the next two weeks, and blindside everybody, there are usually whispers from insiders in the weeks prior – so the lack of any information suggests Sony might not hold any presentation this summer. If true, this would be somewhat surprising, considering Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is just around the corner, on June 26, and there are rumours of a new God Of War game, but it's possible Sony could showcase these during the main Summer Game Fest show. In fact, in a separate post, NateTheHate has said he knows 'of a few Japanese games being shown and/or revealed at Summer Game Fest', which could include Sony. More Trending This post was in response to a ResetEra user who asked if Japanese games will have a big presence at the show, with Kingdom Hearts 4, Resident Evil 9, Persona 6, and the successor to Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth named as their dream reveals. While it's unclear if he was being sarcastic, NateTheHate replied: 'Your expectations don't seem too high, so you should be 'thrilled' per your own words.' Square Enix recently provided an update on Kingdom Hearts 4 for the first time in years, so it's possible a new trailer is on the horizon. Similarly, Capcom appeared to tease Resident Evil 9 in a video last month, while rumours of a Persona 4 remake have also accelerated recently – so there's a chance they will all pop up in some capacity. Although there's normally always a Nintendo Direct in early or mid June the timing of the Switch 2 launch makes it very hard to predict what they might do. But if they do miss their usual spot there's likely to be another Direct in the late summer. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter. Be careful what you read about an Elden Ring movie

On Tuesday, a publication called Nexus Point News published a headline for what looked to be a major piece of entertainment news: 'EXCLUSIVE: Alex Garland Set To Direct 'Elden Ring' Film For A24.' The article claimed that Elden Ring 'is expected to be Garland's next film' and that shooting is expected to start in 2026. But don't get your hopes up: soon after the article was published, Nexus Point News pulled it, and the publication won't say why. How this article made the rounds is an interesting case study in the way news travels on the internet. We first saw the Nexus Point News article from a Wario64 post on X. Generally, Wario64 is a great account to follow to see breaking news in video games almost as soon as it happens. And the account is quite popular, with more than 1 million followers on X. But none of us at The Verge had ever heard of Nexus Point News, let alone recognized it as a place that reliably breaks entertainment news, so something didn't seem right. (Another recent Nexus Point News 'exclusive' includes a potential cast member 'being eyed' for one of the male leads of Star Wars: Starfighter, but the article includes an update that says 'a LucasFilm spokesperson has denied this reporting.') So I messaged Wario64, asking why he reposted it. He said that the person who posted a thread on the gaming forum ResetEra claimed the site was reliable and that 'I guess I'm sharing cause I too think it's absurd lol.' That thread appears to be this one, where the poster says, in a reply to somebody asking 'bro what the fuck is this source lmaooo,' that 'Nexus point news is pretty reliable, they are breaking more and more news before the traditional trades.' Soon after, I refreshed the Nexus Point News story and saw that it had been taken down. I told Wario64 that we were looking into the story on our end and about its removal. Soon after, Wario64 posted about the removal and deleted the original tweet. A24's Sophia Shin also declined to comment on the record. The possibility of an Elden Ring adaptation seems likely. FromSoftware said in early 2022 that it hoped to expand the franchise 'beyond the realm of games.' George R.R. Martin, who provided the 'mythos' for the world of Elden Ring, hinted last year that some kind of adaptation might be in the works. And FromSoftware is about to release Elden Ring Nightreign, a multiplayer-focused spinoff, so announcing a film around now would make some sense. But for the moment, there's nothing official about an Elden Ring movie.
