This robot system by TikTok parent ByteDance can fold clothes and clear your table thanks to AI

TikTok parent company ByteDance has built a robotic system that allows bots to perform household tasks such as folding laundry and cleaning tables. The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) that allows robots to follow language commands and carry out tasks. China, where ByteDance is based, has been developing the technology at lightning speed with the development of its DeepSeek and Manus. According to chip designer Nvidia, robotics is the next phase of AI. That's because while tech companies have been trying to build a general-purpose robot for years, programming robots is difficult. However, with AI, it becomes much easier. Related Cannibal robot? Scientists develop a robot that can grow and heal by eating others What did ByteDance do? ByteDance built a large-scale vision-language-action (VLA) model called GR-3, which allows robots to follow natural language commands and do general tasks. GR-3 can be thought of as the brain of the robot. ByteDance used a robot called ByteMini for the experiment. After GR-3 was inserted into it, the robot could put a shirt on a hanger and place it on a clothing rack. Video by the company also shows the robot picking up household items and placing them in a designated spot. It could differentiate between sizes, successfully following commands to pick up the 'larger plate'. It also completed tasks such as cleaning up the dining table. ByteDance's Seed department, which heads the company's AI research and large language model (LLM) development, said it trained the model with image and text data and then fine-tuned it with data from humans interacting in virtual reality. It was also taught to copy the movements of real robots. Related Humanoids will be the next phase of AI. This is how to train a robot, according to Nvidia ByteDance appears to be increasingly focusing on AI, launching the Seed department in 2023. The new development comes as TikTok is facing another threat of being banned in the US unless the company sells its American assets. US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick reiterated this on Thursday, saying, 'China can have a little piece or ByteDance, the current owner, can keep a little piece'. 'But basically, Americans will have control. Americans will own the technology, and Americans will control the algorithm,' Lutnick told CNBC, adding that if this doesn't happen, 'TikTok is going to go dark, and those decisions are coming very soon'.

Saudi's Yasmina Secures $2M to Scale Embedded Insurance Platform

Yasmina, an embedded insurance platform based in Riyadh, has raised US$2 million in Seed funding. The round was led by Scene Holding, co-led by Access Bridge Ventures, with participation from Arzan VC and the Sanabil Investment Accelerator by 500 MENA. Founded in 2023 by Masoud Alhelou and Bashar Abalkhail, Yasmina provides API-based insurance solutions that integrate directly into digital platforms. The company enables businesses to offer personalised insurance at checkout within 48 hours, backed by full regulatory approval. Since its launch, Yasmina has formed partnerships across sectors including human resources, automotive, travel, point-of-sale, and real estate. These collaborations are expected to extend embedded insurance products, such as SME medical, motor, life, and general insurance, to more than 1.5 million users. The Seed funding will support the company's regional expansion, with operations launching in the United Arab Emirates later this year and in Egypt by 2026. Yasmina also plans to scale its team to support this growth. 'This round is a strong vote of confidence in our vision to simplify insurance across digital touchpoints. We're proud to be the first embedded insurance platform in Saudi Arabia, and this funding will help us scale faster, serve more partners, and redefine how protection is offered in the region.'

Mom 'Worried' About Introducing Dog to Baby—Not Ready for What Happens Next

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new mom was "nervous" about her dog meeting her daughter for the first time, but then something magical happened. Leanne Seed and her partner Sean already had one dog, Cooper, by the time she decided to add Sunny, another four-legged friend, to the family. "I got him in 2019 because I thought Cooper wanted a little brother," Seed told Newsweek. "He loves cuddles and prancing through long grass." Now, nearly six years on, Seed and Sean have just made another new addition to their flock, with Phoebe their daughter. Seed and Sean always wanted Phoebe to grow up around dogs, and there are valid reasons for introducing children to canines from a young age. Babies brought up in homes with dogs have been found to catch fewer colds. In a 2012 study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers charted the medical history of 397 children from birth to 1 year old, noting any respiratory symptoms or infections suffered. In doing so, researchers identified a possible correlation between having a dog in the home and a reduction in respiratory issues of this kind, suggesting a canine companion helps build a better resistance to infection. Dogs can also help a child's emotional and cognitive development. A 2019 study from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found children who owned pets as toddlers were less likely to have poor emotional expression in later childhood. Despite the likely benefits of having a dog around, Seed admits in a video posted to her TikTok @hamilylife that she was "worried" about how Sunny would react to Phoebe's arrival. "We were scared he'd be jealous or scared and growl and bark at her," Seed said. However, as the clip that Seed shared online shows, Sunny's reaction has been decidedly different. "He's been besotted with her," Seed said. "Follows her around. Licks her head. Stares at her and wants to be near." At one point in the video, Phoebe appears to smile as Sunny offers an affectionate lick to the head. Though it has taken a little while for Sunny to be entirely comfortable around Phoebe, he is clearly been a big fan from the moment mom and dad brought her home. "He was timid and shy at first and, as time goes on, he just wants to be near her," Seed said. She said she is "so proud" of the way Sunny has responded to Phoebe's arrival, and she is not the only one who is impressed. At the time of writing, the video showcasing Sunny's deep love for his new human sibling has been watched over 81,000 times. "The goodest boy. He's so gentle!" one viewer wrote. "This is so special. I hope when my baby boy arrives my beautiful spaniel will be so content too," another said. After a few moments of doubt, Seed couldn't be happier to see them together, getting along great. "It's just so cute," she said.

From improving soil fertility to cleaning tools: 6 ways to use lemon peels in garden

Juicy lemons do add a lot of freshness and tang to sweet or savory recipes. From juices to desserts, lemons are used in multiple ways to add taste and flavor. Not only lemons but also their peels and rinds can be utilized in multiple ways, especially during the gardening seasons. What makes lemon peels, which are usually thrown away, effective is the natural acids contained in them, which can be used in making mosquito repellent and several other pest repellents. Several experts told that there are several ways in which lemon peels can be used in the garden. Add mint leaves to the recipe to add another level of fragrance pests hate, or a teaspoon of dish soap to spray on plants with aphids. Use the all-natural spray in garden beds and reapply as needed to maintain the scent. Some peels can also be placed around the base of plants or the edge of the garden to make a physical barrier that deters pests in tandem with the peels' unwelcome fragrance. Live Events Improve soil acidity Lemon peels contain citric acid , which can influence the soil's acidity when added to a compost pile. Put lemon peels in the compost bin with other organic materials; after six months of turning the pile or bin, the compost can be used around acid-loving plants like blueberries and azaleas. If there is no compost pile, lemon peels can still be used to change the soil's acidity. Fertilize the soil Sara Rubens, certified garden coach and founder of Seed to Sanctuary, told that vitamins and nutrients in lemon peels can be used to improve your garden's health by turning them into a liquid fertilizer. Rubens suggests making a gentle homemade fertilizer by soaking chopped lemon peels in water for a couple of days. After soaking, strain the mixture and use the nutrient-rich water to feed your plants. Attract butterflies Adrienne Roethling, head gardener for a private estate and former curator of Juniper Level Botanic Gardens at Plant Delights Nursery, told the lifestyle website that lemon peels can be left around the backyard to encourage butterflies to visit and pollinate the garden. Helps in cleaning tools The citric acid in the lemon peels can also be used for cleaning the garden tools, which can help in minimizing the spread of diseases in the garden. 'Just rub the peel over dirty surfaces to cut through grime before rinsing and drying," Rubens said. Grow new seeds Lemon peels, according to Rubens, can also be used as biodegradable pots, which can be used to start new plants. "After scooping out the pulp, poke a drainage hole in the bottom, fill with seed-starting mix, and plant your seeds. When the seedlings are ready to transplant, the whole lemon cup can be planted directly into the soil, where it will decompose and enrich the earth," she said.
