Sky Tower To Shine A Light On Family Violence
Auckland's Sky Tower will be lit up bright orange on July 1st to help draw attention to the high rates of family violence in New Zealand as part of Shine's annual Light It Orange fundraising appeal. Shine is an Auckland-based specialist family violence provider that delivers a range of services that support people experiencing family violence. It is part of Presbyterian Support Northern's (PSN) group of social services. GM Fundraising & Social Enterprise Lisa Rudolphe says Sky Tower's support will be a big boost for the Light It Orange fundraising appeal, which runs for the month of July. 'The colour orange is used to symbolise hope and Shine provides hope for people experiencing family violence. 'As the Sky Tower can be seen from many parts of Auckland, we are thrilled that on July 1 it will be lit up orange – it will be a beacon of hope for women living with family violence as we call upon the community to help Shine support them and their children,' says Lisa Rudolphe. The theme for this year's Light It Orange campaign is Let's light the way out of family violence and is aimed at highlighting the specialist services that Shine needs support for. These include support for family violence advocates who work with those at risk; KIDshine which supports children traumatised by family violence; emergency short-term accommodation; and programmes to hold people who use violence accountable and support them to change their behaviour. 'This year, we're encouraging the community to join the campaign and be a light in the lives of women and children needing to escape family violence,' says Lisa Rudolphe 'Every year, women and children are killed as a result of family violence. At this moment, women and children are living with abusive family members in our communities – we need support right now to help.' Lisa Rudolphe encourages workplaces, communities, teams and schools to get behind Shine's campaign throughout July. 'Whether your team loves to be social, prefers to support behind the scenes, or you're a mixed bunch, you can turn your collective creativity into real-world impact. Every single dollar counts!' Visit the Light It Orange website to create anindividual or team fundraising page to get started. You'll also find tips and ideas, plus resources to help. About Shine Shine works to make New Zealand homes violence-free. We provide a range of effective, practical, and innovative services to achieve our mission to stop family violence in New Zealand. Key services include: support for family violence advocates who work with those at risk; KIDshine which supports children traumatised by family violence; emergency short-term accommodation; and programmes for people who use family violence to motivate and support them to change their behaviour. We also indirectly help thousands more through our Shine Education & Training professional programmes in workplaces, and our justice and health sector partnerships.

Large turnout for dawn Wexford tractor run raising mental health awareness
The tractor run was organised by farmer Patrick Hipwell and was created in inspiration of the Darkness into Light walk which raises funds for Pieta House, a charity supporting those affected by suicide and self-harm. At 4.30 a.m. 100 tractors and drivers set off for their route across the nine stones before returning to the community centre for early morning refreshments and a chat. Speaking on why he chose this specific route, he said that he believed it demonstrated a message he was trying to convey. "Since we had to go up Mount Leinster, the message is about giving it time and allowing yourself to get over the humps in life. Life will move again.' He added that it was great to see such a great show of community from within and outside the county. "We had a full house even at 3.30 a.m. and there were drivers from Carlow and Kilkenny who saw the event on social media and decided to join. It was very successful. It was unreal to also have around 30 – 40 young people as well.' Also in attendance was MEP for the South constituency Cynthia Ní Mhurchu, Enniscorthy councillor Pat Kehoe, Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy and IFA deputy president Alice Doyle. Over €2,300 was raised and was shared between Slaney Search and Rescue, Ballindaggin Community Development Group, Caim Community Development Group, Kiltealy Men and Women's Shed, Awareness Head to Toe, and Shine's green ribbon. Awareness Head to Toe is a voluntary organisation formed to promote mental health across rural farming communities while Shine's green ribbon campaign is the national stigma reduction programme for Ireland. "People are already talking about doing it next year. It is amazing what we can achieve when the community works together,' he said.

Local FIFO airline caught up in safety probe
Workers at Mid West copper and gold mines are being flown on a plane that is currently the subject of a probe by the national transport safety investigator. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is looking into why one of Shine Aviation's propeller-powered aircraft — registration code VH-PGO — almost had a disastrous landing at Meekatharra Airport on June 5. 'During the approach, the pilot received multiple fuel flow warnings on the number two engine followed by associated engine surging and aircraft yaw,' The ATSB stated. Yaw is the left-to-right movement of a plane's nose. 'The pilot conducted initial actions and secured the engine. The post-flight inspection revealed the engine had lost power due to fuel starvation,' according to the ATSB. 'Engineers replaced an O-ring on the right inboard fuel cap as a precaution.' VH-PGO Credit: Shine Aviation Flight data shows the 10-seater plane was back in the air about five hours after the incident, but it is unclear if any passengers were on board. The plane has since made multiple trips from Shine's Geraldton base to the Golden Grove and Mt Magnet landing strips. The Golden Grove copper mine is run by 29Metals and Ramelius Resources operates the Mt Magnet gold mine. Ramelius declined to comment, while 29Metals and Shine did not respond to requests for comment. Shine, which is owned by Geraldton local John Gooch, will likely have to wait until the final quarter of this year to find out the results of the ATSB's investigation. Shine's close call is the first mechanical mishap in 2025 involving a small airline running charter flights to mines in WA's outback. This follows a spate of safety incidents last year on planes operated by Perth-based Skippers Aviation. On August 12, an aircraft was flying from IGO's Forrestania nickel operation in the western Goldfields when its brakes failed after touching down at Perth Airport. The runaway plane collided with a hangar resulting in 'minor damage'. Just three days later, a Skippers flight from Perth to Northern Star Resources' Bronzewing gold mine had to turn back not long after take-off and make an emergency landing as smoke engulfed the aircraft's interior. The ATSB found the 'serious' incident was caused by a mechanical failure compounded by a series of flight crew mistakes. Then on October 2, another Skippers plane travelling from Perth to Bronzewing was forced to descend rapidly after suddenly losing cabin pressure. Flight data showed the Dash 8 twin engine turboprop aircraft had to reduce its altitude at a rate of more than 5200 feet per minute, way beyond the typical maximum rate of 2500ft per minute when flying the same plane on the same route. Adding to the string of safety breaches, a Skippers crew member was convicted for vaping during a flight on the Perth to Forrestania route during the year. Skippers trimmed its fleet down from 27 in 2022 to 20 by the latter half of 2024, but a spokesman denied its cost-cutting crusade was jeopardising safety. The airline is owned by the Quinlivan family and led by Stan Quinlivan. Mr Quinlivan's investment portfolio includes the Ocean Beach Hotel and a troop of race horses.
