Director Jon Watts Opens Up About Why He Left Marvel's THE FANTASTIC FOUR Project — GeekTyrant

Jon Watts is no stranger to big swings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He directed all three of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films, culminating with No Way Home , a global juggernaut that brought together multiple generations of Spider-Man and nearly hit the $2 billion mark. So when Marvel tapped him to reboot Fantastic Fou , it made sense. But just months before pre-production kicked into gear, Watts quietly stepped away, and now we know why. While speaking at the Mediterrane Film Festival, Watts finally opened up about the real reason he dropped out. It wasn't because of creative differences or a scheduling conflict. It was burnout, specifically, the kind brought on by trying to make No Way Home during peak pandemic chaos. Watts explained: 'The emotional strain of having to go through all of those COVID protocols while also trying to make something creative while also trying to make sure that your cast and crew were all safe — literally, people could've died if you did things wrong — that and the postproduction process was very difficult. 'When you're doing [visual effects work], there's a whole international component to it where you're using vendors from all over the world, and the supply chain had been interrupted because of COVID. It was really hard to get effects done in a traditional way.' Making a Marvel movie is already like steering a freight train through a needle, but doing it under strict health guidelines, that's a different beast entirely. And No Way Home wasn't just another sequel, it was a multiversal event with a sprawling cast, a visual effects gauntlet, and a story that had to emotionally land across three separate franchises. So by the time Marvel came calling again, Watts had to take stock of where he was mentally and creatively. 'I am out of gas. The COVID layer on top of making a giant movie layer, I knew I didn't have what it would've taken to make that movie great. I was just out of steam, so I just needed to take some time to recover. 'Everyone at Marvel totally understood. They had been through it with me as well, so they knew how hard and draining that experience has been; in the end, very satisfying, but at some point, if you can't do it at the level that you feel like you need to for it to be great, then it's better to not do it.' The pressure to always jump to the next big thing, especially when it's something as legacy-heavy as Fantastic Four, can be overwhelming. Watts prioritized his mental and creative health over momentum, which I can respect and appreciate. Since stepping away, Watts worked on the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew . Meanwhile, Matt Shakman ( WandaVision ) took the reins on Fantastic Four: First Steps , which finally hits theaters July 25. Watts says watching the film from the outside will be a 'totally surreal experience.' He won't be returning for the next Spider-Man either as Brand New Day , due in 2026, will be directed by Shang-Chi 's Destin Daniel Cretton, but most recently, he co-wrote and produced Final Destination: Bloodlines . Sometimes the best career move is knowing when to sit one out.

Tobey Maguire's 'Spider-Man' Trilogy Returns to Theaters With Rare Extended Cut

Tobey Maguire's 'Spider-Man' Trilogy Returns to Theaters With Rare Extended Cut originally appeared on Parade. If Tobey Maguire's surprise appearance in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home is any indication, it's that fans haven't yet let go of their love for the famed iteration of New York City's resident wallcrawler. Starring in a grand total of three well-received superhero films from 2002 to 2007, Maguire handed in one of the earliest popular portrayals of Marvel's Spider-Man, setting a remarkably high bar for later actors like Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. With the anniversary of the trilogy's conclusion looming on the horizon, fans can now rejoice at the possibility of seeing Maguire's Spider-Man series in theaters -- I.E., the optimal setting for experiencing Maguire's webslinger soaring through the streets of Manhattan. Beginning later this fall, all three films of director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series will see a limited re-release to theaters nationwide. The exciting event begins with the screening of Spider-Man on September 26, followed by an extended cut of Spider-Man 2 on September 27 and Spider-Man 3 on September 28. Following these initial screening dates, the Spider-Man trilogy will promptly return for an encore presentation the following weekend, playing through from October 3 to October 5. If that weren't exciting enough, as mentioned above, this new retrospective of the Spider-Man trilogy will come with an extended cut of 2004's fan-favorite Spider-Man 2. Often hailed as the strongest entry in the trilogy (as well as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made), this new version of the film has been dubbed Spider-Man 2.1, with several scenes added back into the film that were originally left on the cutting room floor. "The success of Spider-Man in 2002 helped launch the modern era of superhero films," said Ray Nutt, chief executive officer of Fathom Entertainment, who will oversee screenings of the trilogy. "To this day, Tobey Maguire's take on Spider-Man resonates across generations. At Fathom Entertainment, we celebrate fandom and I am delighted that Spider-Man 2.1 in 4K will make its theatrical debut, a true gift for longtime fans and a thrilling discovery for new ones.' Tickets for the films go on sale on July 25. Tobey Maguire's 'Spider-Man' Trilogy Returns to Theaters With Rare Extended Cut first appeared on Parade on Jun 26, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 26, 2025, where it first appeared.

The ‘Spider-Man 2' Extended Edition Is Finally Swinging Into Theaters

Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy is heading back into theaters once more, but this time things will look slightly different for the webslinger. For the first time, the home-release exclusive extended edition of Spider-Man 2 will be part of the theatrical release. Today Fathom Events announced that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films will return to theaters for a limited time beginning September 26. All three movies will screen in 4K, but for the first time, the version of Spider-Man 2 hitting theaters is actually the 2007 extended cut of the film. Put out on DVD in 2007 in the run-up to Spider-Man 3's release, Spider-Man 2.1 features eight minutes of new footage integrated into the theatrical cut, extending multiple sequences in the film while also including a few brand-new scenes and alternate takes. Including, yes, that deleted scene of J. Jonah Jameson putting on the Spidey suit in his office to strike a few poses. The 2.1 cut has been available on home release ever since, including the Blu-ray releases of the trilogy, but the new theatrical run will mark the first time fans get to actually see it on the big screen. Maybe it'll make the wait for Brand New Day go a little quicker? Tickets for the Spider-Man trilogy are available starting July 25 through Fathom Events, with screenings of the trilogy taking place on September 26, 27, and 28, and with a follow-up run on October 3, 4, and 5. Terrifying video shows cheaply-built deck collapse as toddler prepared to blow out candles at 3rd birthday party

Shocking footage captured the moment a cheaply built deck collapsed as a toddler celebrated his Spider-Man-themed third birthday party. The young son of Hilary and Tony Loffredo was seen preparing to blow out his candles when the deck outside their home in West Des Moines, Iowa suddenly crumbled underneath them. 'The kids were crying and we all were screaming, 'Oh my gosh, what do we do?'' Hilary told KCCL. She said around 20 people had gathered for her son's birthday and were eagerly awaiting his Spider-Man themed cake when the deck caved in seconds before they could tuck in. 'There were some people down trapped between the deck and the house and the grill was on top of them,' Hilary continued. 'We were passing the kids from person to person up to the house to get them safe because we weren't sure when the other part of the deck was going to fall and collapse.' Emergency services raced to the home, and due to the number of people involved the West Des Fire Department upgraded their response to a mass casualty incident to bring more fire trucks and ambulances to the home. Thankfully no children or parents were seriously injured in the collapse, with Tony suffering the worst of the impact as he required stitches on his knee. The young son of Hilary and Tony Loffredo was seen preparing to blow out his candles when the deck outside their home in West Des Moines, Iowa suddenly fell apart Tony said: 'I looked down just under my knee and it's just blood running down my knee and I'm like, 'Oh great.' 'Obviously, it could have been way worse. Very fortunate that was the only thing that really had blood or stitched up.' West Des Fire Marshal Mike Whitsell told KCCI that although the party attendees were okay, when they first arrived on the scene it was a 'very scary situation.' The Loffredos said they bought the home in 2019 after the previous owners put up the wooden deck, and recently had an inspection that found it was not up to scratch. 'The previous homeowners hired a local contractor to put this deck up with the roof that is over it and apparently some corners were cut, some things were forgot,' Hilary said. Whitsell said that while a deck suddenly collapsing is rare, there are some things that homeowners can question to find out if they are at risk. 'How old is your deck? Do you have rotted boards that are on there? Have you had your deck inspected?' he said. 'If you've moved into a newer home or a home that maybe somebody had previously, you might just want to have somebody take a look at that.' For the Loffredos, they said they didn't let the incident ruin their son's birthday, and they went on to celebrate with another cake at a bowling alley later in the day (pictured) For the Loffredos, they said they didn't let the incident ruin their son's birthday. 'We rushed out to the store and just bought a cake. We sang happy birthday to him not here. We went to Spare Time and did it and sang happy birthday to him. He was so excited. All he cared about was the cake,' Hilary said. In a Facebook post, She added that a total of two firetrucks, an ambulance, and five police cars showed up, but said thankfully, 'It could have been much worse!' 'I don't think the Birthday Boy, or any of us, are going to forget this Birthday Party for a long time!' she said.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Could Adapt a Classic Spider-Man vs. Punisher Storyline — GeekTyrant

Marvel studios is set to shake things up with Spider-Man: Brand New Day with the inclusion of Jon Bernthal's Punisher. It was a welcome surprise to learn that he's stepping into Peter Parker's world. A blood-soaked vigilante known for body counts, torture, and military-grade takedowns… teaming up (or clashing) with the MCU's most cheerful do-gooder who still gets carded buying glue? There's a interesting dynamic here to play with! It's also a tonal tightrope. The Punisher, especially in Bernthal's hands, isn't just violent, he's R-rated level brutal. Meanwhile, Tom Holland's Spider-Man lives in a PG-13 sandbox, cracking jokes with fun and playful action. Merging these two sensibilities without neutering one or alienating fans of the other is going to take serious finesse. This isn't new territory, though. In fact, the origin of their comic book relationship may be the perfect guide for how Marvel Studios could pull this off. Back in 1974, Frank Castle made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 . Created by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr., and Ross Andru, Castle wasn't the antihero we know today. He was introduced as a straight-up antagonist, a guy manipulated by the Jackal into believing Spider-Man had murdered Norman Osborn. Castle, a battle-hardened Marine out for vengeance, did what he does best… hunted his target with no questions asked. It was a classic setup that centered on a lethal, no-nonsense soldier going after a hero known for holding back and giving people the benefit of the doubt. The tension didn't just come from their awesome fight scenes; it came from their opposing worldviews. Ultimately, after plenty of punches and bullets, Spider-Man convinced Castle he'd been lied to. They walked away not as friends, but with a complicated mutual respect. That's the spark Brand New Day could reignite. In the MCU, Peter has the physical edge with his enhanced strength, Spider-Sense, web-shooters, the works. But Frank Castle isn't the kind of guy you beat just by punching harder. He fights dirty. He's relentless. And unlike Peter, he's not burdened by a no-kill rule. That kind of dynamic sets the stage for a conflict that could challenge Peter morally more than physically, maybe even forcing him to defend people he'd normally fight just to stop Frank from going too far. Spider-Man's been due for a more grounded, street-level story, and Brand New Day could finally deliver that. Especially considering where we last left Castle, breaking out of the prison Fisk tossed him into, and what's brewing in Daredevil: Born Again , where Wilson Fisk is cracking down on vigilantes and practically declaring war on masked heroes. If Spider-Man is out there dodging cops while Punisher's hunting criminals, they're bound to cross paths. There's also talk of a standalone Punisher special dropping before Brand New Day , which could lay the groundwork for his reentry into the MCU and explain how he ends up in Spidey's orbit. If Marvel leans into the tension between these two characters, not just as combatants but as symbols of clashing ideologies, Brand New Day could be more than just another Spidey sequel. It could be a return to the kind of morally complex storytelling that helped make these characters iconic in the first place.
