I'm more in it for the shared, community-driven haunts, so when I noticed the new Twitch Drop section of the ghost hunting game's UI during a Summer Game Fest demo, I asked the team if they had plans to expand on other community activities, like seasonal events. "I think one of the key things is we don't want to walk into the live service area," said lead social and community manager Tom Dent. "We're very much like, the game is the game, and we have those events to sort of bring our year together. We want to steer clear of that kind of vibe. But also our community is so active, so excited. Curious about where they draw the line with online activities and long-term plans, I asked Knight what his vision for supporting Phasmophobia through its 1.0 milestone looks like. They want to keep the haunt going for a while, but there's a limit. "We don't want people to have the expectation that we would carry on forever," said Knight. "We're going to be doing it for the foreseeable future, but we have our own set plan for the game. "We have the roadmap out to 1.0, and that is the main thing as to why we're doing this regular content fix and overhauling everything to get to that [Version 1.0]. After 1.0, we're still gonna be doing content updates, but it won't be overhauling stuff." Knight and the team left the door open for "potentially new ghost types," and additional content like maps, but these big overhauls we're seeing now aren't part of the post-1.0 plan. And while we've seen Kinetic iterate on the online event formula over the years, they seem more focused on perfecting Phas without leaning too hard into its online components. "The game can be played offline, and we don't want to rely on people having an internet connection to play the seasonal events or something, which is why we're trying not to go down that road. I think the three seasonal events we have at the moment is enough of the live service kind of content we have." I do love any ole excuse for more holiday-themed haunts, but respect Kinetic's clear goals and boundaries on where they want to take Phas. They've got a core setup for weekly challenges, three yearly events, and one more online activity through Twitch Drops. I'm a little sad I can't have a possessed Turkey or a demonic Valentine, but it's nice to see a game just happy to have its moment without turning into another always online nightmare.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is out today, not counting the early access period. Kojima Productions and publisher Sony couldn't resist putting out one last trailer. I wouldn't be surprised if the filename for it was something like DS2_FINAL_TRAILER_V17_noactuallyitsthelastone.mp4 and yet it still has a runtime of six minutes. Although there are some fun moments in this trailer, it's much too long. You probably shouldn't watch it if you'd like to stay as spoiler-free as possible before playing the game, as the trailer includes some heavy-handed teases and perhaps gives away some of DS2 's surprises. The game's director, Hideo Kojima, is a man with more ideas than he has time to execute. That's evident in his games, which are packed full of complexity and cinematics. I found a YouTube video titled " Death Stranding 2 All Cutscenes Part 1" that's nearly two hours long. In other words, these games are a lot (though it is cute that there's a special cutscene when it's your birthday). Fittingly, the trailers are excessive as well. By my count, we've now had over 30 minutes of DS2 trailers, including a 10-minute one. That's not counting the 22-minute gameplay demo at Summer Game Fest. There will be more trailers when Death Stranding 2 inevitably migrates from the PS5 to other platforms, so I don't believe for a second that this is the "final" one. Perhaps there will be a Director's Cut edition with its own trailers. Yes, studios, publishers and their marketing teams have a tough time on their hands trying to break through the noise and get their games on the radars of players who might want to check them out. But this is a Hideo Kojima game that Sony is publishing. A sequel to an acclaimed game that more than 20 million people have played. The vast majority of people who would be interested in Death Stranding 2 are likely already well aware of it. This probably didn't need a final trailer, and certainly not one that's six minutes long. (I am well aware of the irony that, by embedding it here, we're bringing more eyeballs to this trailer. Don't @ me.) Kojima famously edits the trailers for his games himself, and he did so with this one. But they could probably do with another pass in someone else's hands.

The Outer Worlds 2 is coming this year, October 29, and it's adding a whole host of weird and wonderful perks so that you can roleplay as a serial killer or someone with bad knees. Bad knees is an in-game flaw that actually made me laugh out loud when it was described during the Outer Wilds 2 direct at Summer Game Fest. It allows you to move faster, but the drawback is when you go from crouching to standing, "your knees are gonna make a loud popping noise that makes it so that, well, everyone around you is gonna hear you." If, like me, you're on the wrong side of 30, you likely know at least one person whose knees do this – chances are, that person is you. It's actually a great roleplay quirk for a stealth character. All that crouch walking must play havoc with your joints – Red Dead Redemption 2 actor Roger Clark did say the hardest part of filming for the game was all the squatting: "three days later my thighs were absolutely killing me." One very cool and slightly cruel perk is serial killer. If you choose it, there's a chance every human you kill will drop a heart, which you can collect to get a permanent boost to your health. If you kill a human who "wasn't hostile" to you, there's a 100% chance of the drop. I'm not sure if this means stealth kills guarantee hearts or you have to kill innocent NPCs, but either way, it's an interesting reward for being a murderer, and another great boon for stealth players; if you do get caught, that extra health will stop you getting put down too quickly. The strangest and most unique flaw revealed so far is sungazer. Quite literally what it sounds like, your character just loves to stare at the sun, and that has permanently damaged their vision. The game will look hazy, and ranged weapon spread will be increased by 100%, making you very inaccurate. It "makes the game pretty unplayable if you happen to choose that," says one developer. While you wait for The Outer Worlds 2 to come out, check out all the upcoming Xbox games.
