Netflix Noooo! One of My Favorite Games and 21 Others Will Get the Axe Soon
More than a year after Netflix added the award-winning game Hades to its gaming service, the streaming giant will remove the game from its service on July 1. No, I'm not crying, I just have something in my eye. Supergiant Games released Hades in 2018 to near-universal acclaim before releasing the game on Netflix. It won numerous awards, including Game of the Year and Action Game of the Year at the 24th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. It also made history as the first (and so far only) game to win a Hugo Award, an accolade usually reserved for science fiction and fantasy literary works, but which created a special category for video games in 2021. Despite the awards, accolades and its short tenure on the service, Netflix is removing the title from its gaming catalog. The gameplay is smooth and fun, the story of a broken family rebuilt one run at a time was great, and the different characters you meet on your quest have such interesting backstories that it was easy to root for them, even when you had to fight and beat them. Hades is one of my favorite games, and one of the only games I've bought and played on multiple platforms, and its removal hurts. I like being able to play this game on my iPhone whenever and wherever I want. If I want that same level of freedom after Netflix removes Hades, I'll have to start carrying my Switch with me everywhere I go, and I don't have big enough pockets to make that work. Hades isn't the only game Netflix is removing from its platform. It's removing about 20 other games, including the Monument Valley trilogy, which released the third installment in the series on Netflix Games in December. Here's a list of the games Netflix is removing from its service soon. Note the last day to play these games is July 14 unless noted otherwise. Battleship Braid, Anniversary Edition Carmen Sandiego CoComelon: Play with JJ Death's Door Diner Out: Merge Cafe Dumb Ways to Survive Ghost Detective Hades (iOS) — Last day is July 1 Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed Ludo King Katana Zero Monument Valley Monument Valley 2 Monument Valley 3 Rainbow Six: Smol Raji: An Ancient Epic SpongeBob: Bubble Pop F.U.N. TED Tumblewords The Case of the Golden Idol The Rise of the Golden Idol Vineyard Valley Netflix Games has been in a state of flux recently. The company previously announced that its first massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Spirit Crossing, as well as WWE 2K, would be coming to service later this year. But the company also canceled a handful of game releases on the platform, like Tales of the Shire. Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said in the streaming company's fourth quarter earnings call for 2024 that it would continue to adjust its games strategy, focusing more on narrative games based on Netflix content. "We want to do more recognizable, mainstream titles, whether that is licensed titles, like GTA…as well as home-grown titles based on our IP," he said. To that end, Netflix released the Black Mirror tie-in game Thronglets in April on the same day the company released the seventh season of the show. The game was featured in one episode of the season, and I felt the game gave more depth to the story the episode was telling. Games are included in the price of a Netflix subscription (starting at $8 a month). You can access the games through the Netflix app on your mobile device. Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment. For more on Netflix games, check out what to know about Spirit Crossing, WWE 2K and the Grand Theft Auto series on the service.

Netflix is letting go of some of its best indie games
If you've been enjoying Hades on mobile via Netflix, you better get in those last few runs while you still can. First spotted by Engadget, and confirmed via the Netflix app, Supergiant's Greek mythology inspired roguelike and 21 other games are being delisted from the service next month. Several titles like Braid, Katana Zero, and yes, Hades, were available exclusively on mobile via Netflix, meaning that when those games go, that's potentially it for them on Android / iOS. Here's a full list of the games leaving Netflix next month. Most games depart the service July 14th, but Hades goes a little earlier on July 1st. (Carmen Sandiego, however, doesn't have a confirmed date for delisting, only that it's 'leaving soon.')The Verge has reached out to the developers of the games that had their mobile versions available exclusively via Netflix to ask if they had plans to distribute them as premium titles. In an email, Nigel Lowrie, a spokesperson for Devolver Digital, wrote, 'We are looking at bringing games that leave services like Poinpy, Katana Zero, and Death's Door to mobile stores as premium titles.' He also said that the developer for each of these games has its own timeline for when that will happen but Devolver is working to get them up on mobile storefronts 'as soon as possible.' Devolver Digital has some experience with this as Exit the Gungeon, which had a mobile version available exclusively via Apple Arcade, will become a paid game on iOS and Android after it was delisted from Apple's gaming subscription service last year. In the Discord server for Color Gray Games, the developers of the Golden Idol series, Andrejs Klavins, the games' lead designer and programmer, wrote, 'This is all recent news for us and all the practical implications have yet to be worked out.' The statement suggests that some developers were only recently told their games would be leaving the platform and not something that was necessarily pre-planned. This removal of third-party games, many of which had decent, mainstream success outside of Netflix, reflects the platform's shifting games strategy. It has halted its acquisition spree and, in October of last year, Netflix closed the new studio it spun up to produce a multiplatform AAA game before it could release anything. In an interview with The Verge at the Game Developers Conference in March, Netflix's new president of games Alain Tascan said, 'we need to find our voice.' Netflix plans on streamlining its offerings to focus more on games that are tied to Netflix-owned shows, multiplayer party games, games for kids, and 'mainstream' titles that have their own large fanbases. And when you look at the numbers, that strategy makes sense. According to data from Appfigures, a mobile analytics company, the most popular game on Netflix is – coming at no surprise – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with an estimated 37 million downloads. The next most popular, though it has less than half the downloads of San Andreas, is Squid Game: Unleashed, a tie-in game for the Netflix-produced Korean social thriller Squid Game. Those two games aren't going anywhere for now. But if you're a fan of any of the games above, they will be leaving soon so try them while you can.

adds new forms for each of the game's weapons, new boss fight variations, and, most importantly,
I see a new Hades II update. Among other things, The Unseen Update a kickass new song from Scylla and the Sirens. The game just keeps getting better. There's still no v1.0 launch date, but Supergiant Games is 'starting to prepare' for the launch, according to a blog post. It's currently in early access on PC, but when it hits 1.0, it'll come out on Switch and Switch 2.

Hades 2 Gets Longest Patch Notes Ever In Last Major Update Before 1.0 Launch Finally Arrives Later This Year
Hades 2 continues trucking along in its journey through Steam Early Access with its third major update which adds new character interactions, art, and weapon aspects. With the longest set of patch notes yet, it's seemingly the last major overhaul before the game hits 1.0 and launches on Switch 2 later this year. 'Expect Hades II to get bigger and better with the addition of a new Hidden Aspect for each of the Nocturnal Arms, a new variation of every Guardian encounter, expanded relationships with a number of key characters, lots of new visual flourishes, and much more,' Greg Kasavin, creative director at Hades developer Supergiant Games, wrote on the game's Discord on Tuesday. 'After more than a year of Early Access development, we're now starting to prepare for our v1.0 launch! The final phase of Hades II development involves adding the story's true ending and other finishing touches. Some additional details are in the in-game Development Roadmap.' A dramatic reading of the new patch notes runs over 38 minutes and includes things like revamping The Flames of Ygnium for snappier combat, new final forms for Nocturnal Arms, and enemies spawning in faster during waves to limit downtime. Probably most noticeable at the outset is that Narcissus has an actual 3D model, animations, and an updated portrait now. No more being self-obsessed with placeholder art. The game's main menu has also been updated to state that the next update will coincide with the 1.0 launch on PC, Switch 1, and Switch 2 (PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S will come later). While Hades 2 is confirmed to be coming out in full sometime in 2025, Supergiant Games isn't ready to reveal the exact timing just yet, and I wouldn't necessarily be surprised if it slips to 2026. 'We really appreciate your patience on this,' Kasavin wrote. 'Sometimes the last stretch of development on a game can make all the difference, so we have always taken this phase seriously and appreciate your continued support.' We also don't know what the final price will be. Hades 2 is currently $30 on Steam ($27 with the current 10 percent discount), but it could go up to $40 once it's out on consoles. The action roguelite is launching simultaneously on both Switch 1 and Switch 2, with improved visual fidelity and framerate on the newer hardware. Supergiant hasn't confirmed yet whether that 'next-gen' upgrade will cost more or be a free upgrade. Hollow Knight: Silksong, another sequel to a critically acclaimed indie action game, is also set to arrive later this year. I can only pray that both sides are talking to one another and not planning to shadowdrop on the same day. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
