Bengal Police Start Helpline For Migrant Workers From State Facing Harassment Elsewhere, BJP Slams Move
The BJP has accused West Bengal's ruling TMC of trying to legitimise Rohingya migrants as potential voters The West Bengal police have introduced a helpline for migrant workers from the state facing harassment and identity checks elsewhere. Families of migrant workers have been raising concerns about their relatives being detained or questioned while working outside Bengal. In a social media statement, Bengal police acknowledged the rise in such complaints and issued a call to action. 'If you encounter problems while working in another state, contact the state police helpline. We have received reports about Bengal natives being harassed and detained in other states. Many workers and their families are unaware of how or whom to report these issues to. Therefore, we urge citizens from Bengal, as well as their families, to inform the local police station or district control room immediately. Additionally, we are launching a dedicated helpline at 9147727666, available exclusively via WhatsApp. Users can send their information, including their name and address. Each case will be verified, and we will coordinate with the relevant state authorities to take appropriate action," the department said. The statement emphasised that while police verification is being streamlined across various states, this helpline will expedite communication and verification processes, facilitating quicker intervention for affected migrant workers. The Bengal government has been proactive in addressing migrant workers' welfare. A Migrant Workers' Welfare Board exists in the state, with an estimated 22 lakh migrant workers from Bengal across India. However, the current situation involves specific issues related to identity verification, making the police helpline crucial at this moment. In December 2023, the state government launched the Karmasathi (Parijayee Shramik) initiative, which includes a toll-free helpline (1800-103-0009) and a 24-hour call centre to support migrant workers. This initiative also established registration infrastructure at railway stations and block offices under the Migrant Workers' Welfare Scheme, 2023, to ensure the safety and well-being of workers across the country. Government sources indicate that the situation calls for immediate action due to the rising instances of harassment and identity checks faced by migrant workers in other states. The police helpline is seen as an essential tool for families to seek immediate help and assistance. Mamata Banerjee Raises Concerns Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has consistently voiced her concerns about the increasing number of Bengalis allegedly being detained or harassed in various states, particularly those ruled by the BJP. This issue first gained prominence when Bengali workers were allegedly detained in Odisha, accused of being Bangladeshi nationals despite having valid Indian identification. Similar alleged instances have been reported in Haryana, where approximately 237 workers were detained, and in Rajasthan, where between 300 and 400 workers were similarly accused. Banerjee said, 'Is it a crime to speak in Bengali?" She announced plans to launch a language movement on July 27, starting from Birbhum, to protest against what she describes as a cultural and linguistic assault on Bengali speakers. BJP Hits Back The TMC government has strongly criticised the 'ongoing harassment" of Bengali-speaking workers, claiming it is politically motivated. Trinamool leaders argue that this is part of a larger agenda to target Bengalis in BJP-ruled states, aiming to label them as Bangladeshis. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party has dismissed these claims, accusing the TMC of trying to legitimise Rohingya migrants as potential voters. The BJP argues that the TMC's language movement is a political strategy to garner support among certain voter segments rather than a genuine concern for migrant workers' welfare. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari said, 'This post is entirely politically motivated. It has been shared to confuse and disturb Bengali people living in different parts of India for work, intending to cause panic. Indian Bengalis and Hindu refugees across India are not facing any problems. However, Hindu Bengalis living in West Bengal often become victims of harassment by the police. To those people and to Indian Hindus coming from other states, no matter what language they speak, if they are residing in any district of West Bengal for work and are harassed by the police (Mamata's police), please send me the details via email. I will provide full assistance. My email ID is – adhikarisuvenduwb1@ 'Additionally, I request any concerned citizens of West Bengal, if they come across any Rohingya Muslims or Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators residing in any district of West Bengal, to kindly send the information to my email ID. I will ensure that this information reaches the proper authorities," he said. West Bengal Police starts helpline for migrant workers in other states
The officer said all messages will be verified, and we will coordinate with the state authorities concerned to take necessary action Press Trust of India Kolkata The West Bengal Police on Friday launched a WhatsApp helpline, 9147727666, to provide assistance to migrant workers facing problems in other states. The helpline was launched after several complaints were received that people from the state were encountering a range of problems, from workplace exploitation to unsafe living conditions, while working in other states, a police officer said. "In many cases, the victims or their families do not know where or how to report such incidents. To bridge this gap, the state police are urging affected individuals or their family members to promptly inform their local police station or district control room," he said. "The WhatsApp-only helpline is also launched for the purpose, so that families can send messages detailing the nature of the problems, along with the victim's name and address," he said. The officer said all messages will be verified, and we will coordinate with the state authorities concerned to take necessary action. This initiative by the state police comes as the ruling TMC has been alleging that Bengali-speaking people were being harassed in BJP-ruled states, and tagged Bangladeshi. TMC MLA Humayun Kabir threatens to start new political outfit again, TMC mulls stern action
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is likely to take disciplinary action against West Bengal's Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, who has once again threatened to float a new political outfit if the party leadership in Murshidabad is not changed by August 15. 'I will wait till August 15. If there is no change or course correction in the district leadership, I have no option but to listen to the people, both Muslims and some Hindus, who are urging me to chart an alternative path,' Kabir said. This is not the first time Kabir has issued such an ultimatum. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, he had similarly threatened to float a party when cricketer Yousuf Pathan was fielded as the TMC candidate from Berhampore. He later withdrew his remarks. A former Congress and BJP member, Kabir has had a chequered political journey and has often been at odds with the TMC leadership. Over the past few months, he has been publicly critical of the party's district leadership in Murshidabad and has been show-caused multiple times for his remarks. Despite his criticism, Kabir has maintained that he has no differences with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. 'TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee will come to power. The leader will be the next Chief Minister. But people are being insulted. My initiative is to stop that insult,' he said, in a comment seen as an attempt to disassociate his rebellion from the central leadership while building pressure on the local leadership. Kabir has hinted that his proposed party will focus on constituencies with significant minority populations: Murshidabad, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, parts of Nadia and Dakshin Dinajpur. 'There will not be just one Humayun Kabir, there will be many,' he said. According to him, the new party would be officially launched on January 1, 2026, with plans to contest 50-52 seats across West Bengal. Sources in the TMC said the latest threat has angered Mamata Banerjee. 'This time, the party supremo is very upset. In her inner circle, she has said that stern action should be taken. If Kabir does not back down, the party may act against him even before August 15. Expulsion is being considered,' a senior TMC leader told The Indian Express. While the party has not issued any official communication yet, TMC spokesperson Joyprakash Majumder dismissed Kabir's deadline as posturing. 'A party has rules. If you want to stay, follow them. Otherwise, the road is open,' he said. The BJP weighed in, with state president Samik Bhattacharya claiming Kabir's threat was a symptom of larger discontent. 'The TMC's farewell is confirmed. Their MLAs know it. There is growing public anger. Whether Kabir is really forming a new party or the TMC is behind it, we don't know. But people will see through it,' he said. CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty took a swipe at Kabir's shifting allegiances. 'He has been in Congress, then BJP, then TMC, back to Congress, and again TMC. Now, he's talking about a new party? This is not politics, it's opportunistic deal-making. He says he is with Mamata Banerjee and also Abhishek Banerjee. So, if he is with both, then who is he rebelling against? This is just bargaining before ticket distribution,' Chakraborty said. Kabir's latest move has raised concern within the TMC about potential fissures in its minority vote base, especially in Murshidabad, Malda, and parts of north Bengal. 'The worry is that Kabir's posturing, even if it doesn't result in a new party, could damage morale and confuse the minority electorate that has traditionally supported the TMC,' a party leader said.
