MNCF determined to resolve Sea Games road cycling funding issue

KUALA LUMPUR: There is still hope that professional riders from Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) will represent the country at this year's Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20). The two teams had previously stated that they will not release their riders for the biennial games if the National Sports Council (NSC) does not meet their requests for funding. MPC had also requested for new time trial bikes. The Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) today (July 23) announced that they will submit a new Sea Games budget to NSC within one week. The new budget will take into consideration requests from TSG and MPC. Representatives from NSC, MNCF, MPC and TSG attended a four-hour meeting in Bukit Jalil today to discuss preparations for the games. MNCF president president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill, technical director John Beasley and road cycling committee chairman Norazman Abu Samah were among those present. "I feel things are moving positively, there is nothing in this world that cannot be resolved through discussion," said Amarjit. "NSC have always had an open door policy and they are willing to consider any additional support required for the Sea Games. "I have asked the (MNCF) road committee to prepare a detailed budget for the Sea Games which we will submit within a week. We have to be quick because the Sea Game is just a few months away. "I believe most of the requests from TSG and MPC are acceptable. "I can't speak on behalf of NSC, however, I believe they will accept some of the requests but maybe not all. We are hoping for a positive outcome." TSG had previously requested RM250,000 from NSC to cover training and competition expenses (at warm up races) to prepare their riders for the Sea Games. It is understood that MPC had been seeking a similar amount. NSC had early this year allocated RM300,000 to MNCF for road cycling though only RM196,000 remains after RM104,000 was spent on preparing and sending riders to compete at the Asian Championships in Thailand earlier this year. Amarjit said the response from both professional teams was positive after the meeting. "I think they were both quite receptive, they understood the situation and that NSC also has constraints," said Amarjit. "When we left the meeting, everyone had smiles on their faces which is good. "At the end of the day, we just want to make sure we have the best riders representing the country at the Sea Games." Amarjit disclosed that nine riders have been shortlisted for the Sea Games squad - four from TSG, four from MPC and one from St George Continental Cycling Team. Ren Bao Tsen is currently on the books at St George, which is a UCI continental squad from Australia.

TSG take on World Tour giants in Spain

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) began their Spanish classics campaign on a mixed note at the Terres de L´Ebre Classic yesterday (July 22). TSG's foreign riders achieved decent results with Stefan de Bod coming in 24th (+2:01s), Mathias Bregnhoj was 33rd (+2:59s), Vadim Pronskiy was 36th (+3:05s) while Anatolii Budiak was 51st (+5:28s) from over 120 riders who started the race. TSG's local trio Kee Zhe Yie, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff, however, did not finish the 185.8 kilometre race which started in Roquetes and ended in Tortosa, featuring a brace of category three climbs. The pace was strong from the start as the UCI 1.1 race featured UCI WorldTeam squads from UAE Team Emirates, XDS Astana Team, Movistar Team and EF Education-EasyPost. Team Emirates' Isaac del Toro - runner-up at this year's Giro d'Italia - claimed victory in 4:23:58s. Astana's Christian Scaroni came in second (+46s) while EF Education-EasyPost's Lukas Nerurkar (+51s) completed the podium. Davide Formolo (8th, Movistar) and Diego Ulissi (9th, Astana) were among the other big names in the top-10. TSG riders will next head to the Basque Country for the Ordiziako Classic (167km) on Friday (July 25). They will conclude their campaign in Spain with the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race (172.2km) on Aug 3. All three events are UCI 1.1 races which are part of the UCI European Tour.

TSG: We can't share our time trial bikes

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) confirmed they have time trial bikes which they can use if their riders compete for the country at the Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20). They, however, cannot lend the bikes to non-TSG riders in the national squad, said TSG chief operating officer Nasiruddin Wan Idrus. This is due to contractual obligations the UCI continental team has with its sponsors. "We don't know which riders will be called up for the Sea Games yet," said Nasiruddin recently. "We do have time trial bikes but they are only for our riders. "Our sponsors provided us with the bikes for our riders to use. We cannot share them with other riders (from other teams) called up to the national team. "And these bikes have specific sizes, so sharing them is not that simple." The National Sports Council (NSC) earlier this month asked the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) to choose between sending TSG or Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) riders to the Sea Games. NSC added that TSG is already equipped with time trial bikes and thus does not require additional funding to purchase new time trial bikes. MNCF, however, insisted they will select the most in-form riders to represent Malaysia at the Sea Games, regardless of which team they are from. The individual and team time trial events are seen as Malaysia's best bet to win gold in men's road cycling at the Sea Games this year. This is because hosts Thailand have opted to include steep climbs in the mass start road race to boost their own riders' chances of winning gold.

National cycling squad ready if TSG, MPC pull out of SEA Games

KUALA LUMPUR: National road cycling coach Yusof Nasir insists his squad will be ready to race at the Thailand SEA Games (Dec 9-20) - even if both UCI Continental teams, Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC), withdraw. TSG and MPC have threatened to withhold their riders from the Games unless the National Sports Council (NSC) agrees to fund their participation. Malaysia's gold-medal success in the men's mass start road race at the last two SEA Games was built on a combination of riders from TSG, MPC and the national team, with TSG's Nur Aiman Zariff (Hanoi 2021) and Nur Amirull Fakhruddin Mazuki (Phnom Penh 2023) striking gold. However, NSC has now asked the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) to choose only one of the two Continental teams for the Games. Yusof, whose national squad are funded by the NSC, said they will comply with any directive from their paymasters but hopes the ongoing stand-off will be resolved swiftly. "We are the national team and will follow the NSC's instructions. It's now up to the MNCF to decide on rider selection," he said. "In previous SEA Games, we combined riders from the Continental and national teams to win gold. We hope the same can happen again - that the best riders are selected for the country "But if it comes down to a worst-case scenario, we'll still be ready to compete." Yusof said the national team are currently preparing for the Petronas Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL), which runs from Sept 28-Oct 5, and will continue training beyond that if needed for the SEA Games. Among the riders in the national squad are Ren Bao Tsen, Afiq Huznie Othman, Muhsin Misbah and Shaiful Adlan Shukri. "We're grateful for the support and funding from the NSC," said Yusof. "We're focused on the LTdL for now, but if our riders are called up for the SEA Games, we'll be ready."
