Lucid stock pops 43% after Uber announces robotaxi. What to know about the Tesla rival

Lucid stock shoots for the moon as EV company reveals Uber partnership. Robotaxis on the way. Lucid Group Inc. (NASDAQ:LCID) stock is on the move as the trading week comes to a close. The share price popped over 34% in the last five trading days from $2.29 a share at Monday's open to a price of $3.08 a share at the time of reporting. The stock has been trading under $3.00 a share since late February ,but jumped 43% from Wednesday's $2.29 a share close to $3.30 a share at 11:30 PM on Thursday. So, why is the stock making huge gains this week? Lucid teams up with Uber and Nuro to create robotaxi service Watch out Waymo and Tesla, there's a new robotaxi service in town. Uber announced that it is investing $300 million in electric vehicle automaker Lucid on Thursday. The duo will partner with robotics company Nuro to create a Robotaxi service featuring Uber's rideshare platform, Lucid's electric vehicles, and Nuro's autonomous driving technology. Lucid's recent stock price action is due to the announcement of this partnership. Uber's share price did not rise in reaction to the news, unlike the huge movements from Lucid's share price. The rise of the robotaxi: A multi-billion dollar bet Over 1,500 autonomous vehicles operate commercially in five American cities, according to Goldman Sachs. A whopping 35,000 autonomous vehicles could operate in the U.S. by 2030, based on Goldman Sachs research. If these projections are accurate, autonomous vehicles could "generate $7 billion in annual revenue". Waymo raised $5.6 billion in the fall of 2024 to expand its robotaxi service, according to CNBC. Tesla recently rolled out its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas in late June. Companies are betting billions of dollars on the emerging robotaxi rideshare market. Uber's investment into Lucid and partnership with Nuro is an effort to level the playing field. The company is looking to deploy 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with Nuro's advanced driving technology to launch the autonomous vehicle robotaxi program. Is the Lucid Gravity a good electric vehicle? The Lucid Gravity electric SUV boasts a 450-mile EPA estimated driving range, which is significantly higher than the maximum range of best-selling EVs like the Tesla Model Y (357 miles). Lucid recently set a Guinness World Record for driving range with its electric car, the Lucid Air Grand Touring (749 miles). The 2026 Lucid Gravity seven-seat electric SUV boasts "magical amounts of interior space" and the "quickest charging speeds in America" according to a vehicle review by InsideEVs. It can recuperate 200 miles of its total driving range in around 11 minutes and is compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network. Nuro, the autonomous vehicle technology component of the robotaxi partnership, has been "operating fully autonomous vehicles on roads for more than four years" as of 2025, said Co-Founder and CEO Jiajun Zhou. It operates in markets like Texas, California, and Arizona. The company logged "over a million miles of autonomous driving without any accident" according to the CEO.

A Warning About Tesla Full Self-Driving In Complex Urban Environments

The images show the Tesla Model Y equipped with its Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. The ... More photos highlight the vehicle's logo, the navigation screen displaying real-time traffic and autonomous driving interface, and the interior with hands-off steering functionality, underlining Tesla's advanced driver assistance systems in Bari, Italy, on December 10, 2024. (Photo by Matteo Della Torre/NurPhoto via Getty Images) Tesla Full Self-Driving can dazzle. But complex city grids test its limits. For the past several months, I've been doing regular tests in Los Angeles of the 2026 Tesla Model Y 'Juniper' with version 13.2.9 of Tesla Full Self Driving (Supervised). In most cases, the tests were successful. Almost flawless. But it occasionally failed spectacularly. Los Angeles is already tough for human drivers Downtown Los Angeles is different from suburban Los Angeles (where I've had good success with FSD). I have near-misses in downtown Los Angeles all the time. And that's strictly as a human driver without any kind of Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS). For example, hopping off of 101 at Western Avenue onto Santa Monica Boulevard can be a very dicey proposition during peak traffic hours. At times, it can feel like a free-for-all. Unpredictability is the rule. This can be challenging for the best human drivers. Dealing with complexity So, I'm always impressed when Waymo manages to finesse its way through the west side of Los Angeles: down narrow residential streets and roundabouts in West Hollywood and byzantine intersections in the Beverly Hills business district. But here's the difference: Waymo operates in a small, circumscribed (aka geofenced) area in Los Angeles. And it's equipped with not only cameras but Lidar and radar. That said, most of the time Tesla FSD feels very much like Waymo. For example, my testing in northwest Los Angeles went very well. But downtown Los Angeles is another matter – as I've found out over the past few months. Recent test drives of 2026 Model Y 'Juniper' Latest drive: I just finished my sixth test drive of 2026 Model Y in downtown Los Angeles (I use 'downtown' loosely to mean urban Los Angeles as opposed to suburban Los Angeles County). I traveled from Century City to the edge of East Hollywood and back. It was relatively successful (only two interventions) until a glitch happened at the end when FSD tried to enter a public garage via the garage exit. Oops. Prior unsuccessful drive: But the drive prior to the one above really got my attention. (See: Tesla Model Y Juniper FSD Test Drive Fails 3 Times). The most spectacular glitch was when FSD got confused at a complex intersection and headed into opposing traffic (see video). Needless to say, I wasn't ready for that. I didn't respond as quickly as I should have. And that wasn't all. Later in the drive, FSD lurched right – for no apparent reason – and tried to go down a steep driveway grade toward a locked gate. Moral of the story The moral of the story is FSD can dazzle as an autonomous driving system. It performs remarkably well most of the time. It has wowed me more than a few times. But that can be misleading. When it screws up, it can really screw up. Particularly in complex urban environments where there is an overabundance of unpredictability and weird street grids. The second moral of the story: it's not always clear what Tesla FSD can do and what it can't do. For example, I didn't know FSD got flummoxed by parking garages. After I described the incident to a Tesla store manager, he advised me not to use FSD in parking garages – which, again, I had no way of knowing. Not disavowing FSD I still believe that Tesla Full Self-Driving, if used prudently, makes you a better driver and the roads safer. The highways in Los Angeles are teeming with distracted drivers and those drivers would benefit greatly from a fully-focused ADAS like Tesla FSD. And an ADAS is great on long, monotonous highway trips where it's easy to lose focus and get drowsy. The trick is not to overestimate FSD's capabilities and let your guard down in urban environments. Do that and you're likely asking for trouble.

The new automaker dropped the teasers for the new Tesla Model Y L on Weibo, one of the most popular social media platforms in China, while details of the upcoming offering were leaked online as the automaker applied for a new sales license with China's Ministry of Information Technology. Leaked details reveal the Model Y L will be 4.98 metres long, 1.92 metres wide, and 1.67 metres tall. Compared to the standard version, the long-wheelbase model will measure 179 mm longer and 44 mm taller, with no change in the width of the vehicle. In China, Tesla has sold over 171,000 units of the Model Y since the start of this year, while the brand's total sales stood at 263,400 units, ending June 30, witnessing a 5.4 per cent drop year-on-year.
