Is ‘The Penguin' returning for season 2? Everything we know so far

By Aman Shukla Published on July 12, 2025, 20:11 IST Last updated July 12, 2025, 20:12 IST Fans of HBO's The Penguin have been eagerly awaiting news about a potential second season since the gripping finale of its debut run in November 2024. The crime drama, a spin-off from The Batman (2022), captivated audiences with Colin Farrell's stellar performance as Oswald 'Oz' Cobb and Cristin Milioti's chilling portrayal of Sofia Falcone. But will we see more of Gotham's criminal underworld? Here's everything we know about the possibility of The Penguin Season 2. Was The Penguin Meant to Be a Limited Series? The Penguin was sold as a 'limited series,' meaning it was meant to wrap up nice and tidy after eight episodes. It's basically a bridge to The Batman Part II (coming October 2027, mark your calendar). That finale, with Oz running the show and the Bat-Signal lighting up, felt like a perfect ending, right? Like a killer crime novel you don't mess with. But hold on—shows like The White Lotus got called 'limited' too, then boom, more seasons. So, maybe there's hope? Will There Be a Season 2? Right now, July 2025, The Penguin Season 2 is still just a maybe. HBO's playing it cool, and the team's taking their sweet time. With The Batman Part II dropping in 2027, we might not see more Penguin on TV until 2028—if it even happens. For now, Oz is set to feature in the movie. The Batman Universe The Penguin is part of Matt Reeves' 'Batman Epic Crime Saga,' a standalone universe. Reeves has teased other shows, like maybe a Catwoman series or something about Harvey Dent being a lawyer. So, even if The Penguin doesn't get a Season 2, Gotham's story might keep going elsewhere. James Gunn gives early verdict on Batman Part II script

James Gunn has confirmed The Batman Part II script is finished. The Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios has delivered an early, positive verdict on Matt Reeves' script, but he decided against offering too much information about the hotly-anticipated movie. When asked at the Superman world premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night (07.07.25) if he has read The Batman Part II script, he simply told ScreenRant: "It's great!" Gunn then made a swift exit from the chat, but was smiling as he walked further down the carpet. The filmmaker's comments come after he admitted last month he was expecting to see a script, and he was "totally excited" about reading Reeves' latest work. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly late last month, he said: "Listen, we're supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. "We feel really good about it. Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet, if that's your question." The DC head insisted people should "get off Matt's nuts", and stop hassling him for updates about The Batman Part II. Gunn said: "People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. "He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. "I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does." Gunn admitted he felt "irritated" by the constant bombardment of questions about the movie online. He said: "I am irritated by people. I mean, it's just that thing people don't need to be entitled about. It's going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. "And Matt's not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay." The Batman Part II was initially due to hit cinemas in 2026, but it was pushed back a year to October 2027 to give Reeves more time to finish the story.

Exciting updates on 'The Batman 2': Script completion announced by Matt Reeves

After several delays, the DC fans eventually got some great news about the much-awaited sequel to 'The Batman'. The photo of the completed script was shared by the writer, as well as director Matt Reeves , on Friday. In the Instagram post, Reeves shared 'Partners in Crime (Fighters),' mentioning his co-writer Tomlin. Even though the first page of the script is blurred, the logo of The Batman is clearly visible. 'The Batman' update comes just a few weeks before the launch of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe with the release of 'Superman' in theaters. Reeves can continue to tell his story without any crossover pressure. It has been quiet for a long time. But now there's movement. The story is written. The vision is back on track. The road to 2027 is still long. But at least fans now know: Gotham will return. Reeves is behind the wheel again. FAQs 1. When is The Batman Part II releasing?
