Microsoft's infamous Blue Screen of Death is finally going away for good

Microsoft has confirmed that it is killing off its iconic Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The screen is something most Windows users (unfortunately) are all too familiar with—the azure shade that appears on a person's PC when Windows suffers a total system crash. He was buried in a mushroom casket. Soon he'll be part of the soil CEO of an $11 billion builder empire warns that these housing markets face a short-term oversupply Lifting the veil on the critical—and oft-times overlooked—factors driving AI growth Here's what you need to know about the death of the Blue Screen of Death. Though Windows has changed pretty radically since version 1.0 came out in 1985, several elements of Microsoft's operating system have stuck around in the four decades since, including file folders, scroll bars, resizable windows, and a blue screen that showed when something went wrong. Yes, the bane of Windows users everywhere has been a built-in part of the operating system in some form since the beginning. What is now known as the Blue Screen of Death debuted in Windows 1.0 in 1985, and since then, it has appeared on millions of screens—maybe billions around the world. The Blue Screen of Death has undergone several revisions over the decades, displaying different layouts and other data intended to help users identify the issue with their computer. And as it has sunk into the public consciousness, it's even been used by Microsoft's rivals to poke fun at the company. For decades, Apple's operating system for the Mac, currently known as macOS, has featured the Blue Screen of Death on the system icon representing networked Windows PCs. But it was last year that the Blue Screen of Death caught worldwide attention. The Blue Screen of Death appeared on Windows PCs around the world for days after the infamous CrowdStrike update that took down Windows machines across the globe. Unfortunately, Microsoft isn't killing off the Blue Screen of Death because the company has solved the problem of unexpected crashes and restarts. The BSOD screen will still exist on Windows going forward—just with a new color. After an update to the Windows operating system later this summer, the Blue Screen of Death will become, well, the Black Screen of Death. In a blog post announcing several steps that it is taking to enhance the Windows enterprise experience, Microsoft stated that the changes are 'part of a larger continued effort to reduce disruption in the event of an unexpected restart.' Specifically addressing the BSOD, Microsoft said it was introducing the simplified user interface to go along with a new, shortened recovery experience. 'The updated UI improves readability and aligns better with Windows 11 design principles, while preserving the technical information on the screen for when it is needed,' the company said. In its blog post, Microsoft said that the new Black Screen of Death will replace the Blue Screen of Death in the Windows 11 24H2 update. The company says that the update will be available on all compatible devices 'starting later this summer.' RIP, Blue Screen of Death. We knew you too well. Asking Eric: My husband smells

Dear Eric: I've been married for a few decades to someone who lacks self-awareness about the impact of his choice not to shower for several days, sometimes more than a week. He doesn't even shower after he works out/runs. He also wears the same underwear for days at a time. When I tell him he smells he says he can't smell anything. Believe me, he smells. He seems not to care or believe what I tell him about good hygiene practices. Maybe if he hears your opinion on the matter of good hygiene for men it might crack open a willingness to change. – Keeping the Windows Open Dear Windows: If he doesn't heed your comments about his body odor, as someone who loves him and lives with him, I doubt he cares what I think. But here's the facts: personal hygiene is personal, but one's personal hygiene practices impact those around them. This is true of people who don't bathe and also people who are fastidious about bathing and douse themselves in cologne, and everyone else in between. We don't live in bubbles (metaphorically, or in your husband's case, perhaps literally). Beyond the odor issue, is there a communication problem here? Because if you're telling him about an aspect of your shared life that's causing you problems (and, frankly, a health concern), and he's dismissing it, what else is he dismissing? Are there other concerns of yours that he doesn't take seriously? I'm not trying to problematize your marriage. I hope this is the only issue you two have. However, when a spouse brings up an issue, it's always best for the couple to work together to find a solution. There's got to be a way for both of you to be happy and happily share a space. Dear Eric: The letter from 'Burning Questions, Not Hillsides', who was trying to keep a friend from smoking in their backyard, reminded me of a little decorative plaque I made and used to display in my home years ago. I was a young adult and mother in the 1970s and 1980s when smoking was still common. I do not recall if I created this little verse or if I read it somewhere. (My apologies to the author if I inadvertently plagiarized.) It read: 'Welcome to our non-smoking home. If you are seen smoking, we will assume that you are on fire and treat you accordingly.' I probably still have it packed away somewhere but thankfully would not need to display it in 2025. – Sign of the Times Dear Sign: I love a cheeky sign that also helpfully lets friends know how to be good guests. Dear Eric: I have a distant relationship with my brother as I am a gay man with a 'new thought' religion, both of which he says will send me to Hell. We communicate, mostly by email on birthdays and Christmas, but did get along well more than 10 years ago when our father passed and the estate was settled. I sent my nieces gifts on their birthdays and Christmas until they turned 18 and stopped thanking me. I've seen one niece in person in the last 20 years. Two of the nieces send Christmas wishes at times. I was invited to the wedding of a grandniece I've never met, probably at the urging of my sister-in-law, who would like to see my brother and I closer. My husband was not included in the invitation. I declined the invitation, stating we had booked a cruise at the time of the wedding. I will send a card. Of course, I lied about the cruise. Should I have attended as a way to get back into the family? They are my only living family save three cousins, two of which are fundamental Christians. I feel much closer to my husband's family who are welcoming and available. How do I handle another invitation? – Estranged Guest Dear Guest: Wedding invites are sometimes olive branches, but at other times they're simply social gestures that can take on outsized influence. While the invitation you received was kind, accepting it or future invites that feel more obligatory rather than genuine, may not serve you as well as reaching out to your family in a way that is safe for you. Let's talk about this practically: would you really have enjoyed this wedding, knowing few people and feeling that your husband had been excluded? I suspect you wouldn't have, which would have made it hard to have reconnecting conversations with your brother. Weddings are also not ideal times for those kinds of conversations. A card is the right move here. But if you want to be closer to your family, first figure out what your boundaries are (ideally in conversation with your husband), and then reach out.

Microsoft's 'blue screen of death' has died at 40

Microsoft announced the end of its infamous "blue screen of death" in favor of a simple black screen and error code that better enable system recovery after a crash. Photo by Hannibal Hanschke/EPA-EFE June 28 (UPI) -- The infamous "blue screen of death," which featured a text frown and terrified those who experienced it, no longer exists after Microsoft killed it in favor of a simple black screen and error code. The blue screen has been in use since Windows 1.0 was made available in 1985, but it will be replaced by the new black screen without the frown with the Microsoft 11, version 24H2 systems starting this summer, CNET reported. Microsoft used the blue screen to indicate system failures and the need to restart the computer, which often meant a loss of data and time wasted on work that might not have been saved. The new black screen is a "simplified UI for unexpected restarts" and part of Microsoft's new resiliency program for the Windows operating system. The black screen is designed to make it much easier and faster to fix problems by providing a stop code and identifying the relevant system driver. Microsoft says it could reduce system recovery time to as little as 2 seconds following a computer crash. The tech giant announced the change on Thursday, which addresses concerns raised following the global CrowdStrike outage that affected more than 8 million computers due an undetected error last year on July 19. The outage affected 911 services, airline travel, television and public infrastructure.

Windows' infamous 'blue screen of death' will soon turn black

Nearly every Windows user has had a run in with the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death' at some point in their computing life. Now, after more than 40-years of being set against a very recognizable blue, the updated error message will soon be displayed across a black background. The changes to the notorious error screen come as part of broader efforts by Microsoft to improve the resiliency of the Windows operating system in the wake of last year's CrowdStrike incident, which crashed millions of Windows machines worldwide. 'Now it's easier than ever to navigate unexpected restarts and recover faster,' Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft wrote in an announcement. As part of that effort, Microsoft says it's 'streamlining' what users experience when encountering 'unexpected restarts' that cause disruptions. And that means a makeover to the infamous error screen. Beyond the now-black background, Windows' new 'screen of death' has a slightly shorter message. It's also no longer accompanied by a frowning face — and instead shows a percentage completed for the restart process. Microsoft says this 'simplified' user interface for unexpected restarts will be available later this summer on all of its Windows 11 (version 24H2) devices. And for PCs that may not restart successfully, Microsoft also said it's adding a 'quick machine recovery' mechanism. The will be particularly useful for during a widespread outage, the tech giant noted, as Microsoft 'can broadly deploy targeted remediations' and automate fixes with this new mechanism 'without requiring complex manual intervention from IT.' Microsoft said this quick machine recovery will also be 'generally available' later this summer on Window 11 — with additional capabilities set to launch later in the year. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press.
